3rd and 4th gear issues

67k… just had the motor rebuilt as well… new stg 3 clutch, LW flywheel etc…

could be worn synchros.

your first and second gear synchros are big and beefy and strong
the rest of the synchros are much less beefy and strong, and they’re all the same size

Which gears of 3-4-5-6 do you use the most? 3rd, then 4th. Which synchros go the soonest on just about all Audis in the last 8 years? 3rd, then 4th

Now, it could be a bunch of things, but that’s one of them.

Cold temps can also cause some of this. It was a lot cooler the last couple of days than it was the last few weeks.

I wouldn’t say it’s not fluid either. Keep an open mind.

Was the motor work Audi warranty work? Let them know that since getting the car back you’ve had tran problems. No clutch problems…gear engagement problems (they’ll blame the clutch/flywheel if they can)

great! just great… there is no crunching yet, but you defiantly have to use some force to get them in gear now… Now what if i told you I let a friend drive the car for about 30 miles… very hard driving, some clunks here and there, you know the sound of the clutch grabbing not rev matched… does that further support syncros?

67k? damn bra replace that trans fluid. i switched to redline at 36k and got rid of that annoying grinding you get when cold. 3 years later and thousands of launches, clutch dumps, track visits, power shifts and my trans is rocking on.

I second trying the Redline route first…it’s pretty inexpensive compared to tearing the tranny out, you should do it for piece of mind, and if it is the main problem you will be very happy because you could waste a lot of money looking into this problem before doing the simple stuff.

Fluid and syncros for sure. Look there. I had that issue just before I sold my RS4. came out later that the 3rd gear syncro was bad

Synchros for sure. Might be too late for fluid to fix it though. Mine won’t go into 2nd when it’s cold and it always pops out of 2nd when I let off the throttle. Then my 3rd synchro is fubar’d too. I replaced the fluid 6k ago with Motul Gear 300 and it hasn’t fixed anything.

I bet we can get a group buy going for trans rebuild kits. There’s quite a few of us that need an overhaul.

who does them…just JHM or anyone else

(rebuilds)

I would reckon JHM hates doing the work but may have a kit. I watched their DIY and it looked like nothing I`d enjoy lol.

Anyone I guess. But mainly pointing at JHM. they have an old thread on AZ about their rebuild kits. $1200 for everything

I would go with either Scotty or JHM. I recently contacted JHM about the 0.56 sixth gear to see if they still offer it and have not heard back how much it would be. The thread on AZ about the different gear said that they wanted to sell the gear with the rebuild kit. It also appears JHM has got a new guy named Dru doing responds to emails now too.

Scotty got me my .53 TDI 6th gear and I am extremely pleased with the results. 27 mpg (summer gas) on the interstate.

on what car is that qikrnu?

2004 S4 Avant (05/04 mfr date)

I would never get any parts from scotty. he has been caought liying on line so many times. I don’t see how anyone has respect for him. Also the large number of threads wehre scotty has been caught selling used parts as new would be just as bad.

I do like the .56 gear. Idea I met a guy last year that had JHM do his. The RPM drop was serious and from his reports the fuel mileage was quite a jump forhim

I just spoke with JHM and they suggested bleeding the lines again since there may be some air trapped in there somewhere. Said that the hard shift between gears could be that the pressure plate is not fully disengaged causing the hard throw… I will take the car back to the shop and keep you posted…

I think it is clutch drag so the box doesn’t unload enough. I don’t know if this is hydraulic or the gearbox shaft dragging inside the flywheel. I have changed slave and master cylinder with little effect. The only thing I have not changed back is the lw flywheel. I wonder that as it gets hot something is slightly binding and dragging the input shaft it is so inconsistant. Tonight was very cold and my gearchange felt really good?

horsepower, i would think your car would be ok with a stock clutch?

its a cfuge so it doesn’t HIT like turbo torque and the torque is what will test the clutch. Not sure if its an option to go stock while you guys figure it out

if it was my car and I was trying to market the kit to the s5 guys, I would just do what I could to get a good pass done. This car is basically a billboard for tts. You need it running!

sounds very plausable. I would have suggested the same thing

You should also very much consider that you have bent the input shaft. This is something that would cause issues such as you stating. Sounds like its less of the clutch flywheel and more transmission.

I totally agree Saki. But JHM have my stock clutch as an exchange item. Regarding a bent shaft, I have already thought of that and checked the original gearbox and the new one I have fitted. The problem has been there since the first fit. Regarding bleeding the hydraulics, I have replaced both cylinders and bled the system several times BUT I would say I still have a feeling its clutch release movement related. I have cut a hole in the bell housing so can see the clutch movement and the release bearing is moving a good 1/4 inch. I can also see that everything is running perfectly true. Nobody has been able to tell me how much movement I need to clear the friction plate. I have put the whole assembly on the press and I believe it needs nearer 9mm (3/8) to get things clear but how do I achieve that?
