Anyone Here Throw Out Their Back?

it has been really weird.

  1. no cast; just a sling for a week
  2. almost immediate therapy involving moving the arm and bending it

Injury management has changed a lot over the years. I spent 4 hrs in the fracture clinic at the local hospital while waiting to meet with teh orthopaedic surgeon…and saw about 50 people go through. Only 1 had a cast and it was because of a badly broken wrist.

It’s all about range of motion, and maintaining your strength/muscle mass.

I broke the radial head on my right arm. about 1/3 of the head was broken clear, and shifted up about 2mm. I was sure I’d be trapped in a cast for 2 months, but nope. Just a sling for a week and then this brace that velcro’d on to wear when I was in crowds etc. After 3 weeks I never wore that again.

Problem is that last 10 degrees of motion (flexion and extension) takes ages. I’m 90% of the way to good, but that last little bit will take ages. On the downswing the right arm straightens right at the bottom, so when I make a swing, it fucking kills. It’s not the bone…it’s the scar tissue that is getting broken up.

I can hit chip shots and putt, that’s it.

Yea I hear ya, and that last 10% of motion hurts like hell too! It unreal how “painful” physical therapy can be just by trying to stretch and rehabilitate the muscles & tendons to regain that flexibility.

Well glad to hear that it was relatively minor and that is interesting about the lack of casts these days. Doesn’t surprise me too much as what you said makes sense.

Yeah after reconstructive knee surgery i have a whole different outlook now when i watch football and someone blows out a knee. I still for the life of me cant figure out how adrian peterson came back so quickly from his. I realize he is a super athlete with the best training but my god. 10 months after my surgery i was still having some pain playing volleyball in a pool. And i went to physical therapy 3 times a week for two hours. Now i very minimal pain. actually my so called good knee is now worse than my repaired one. You can here the bone on bone when i go down stairs or try to walk slowly.

That sucks, especially in the summer. How’d you break it?

Fell awkwardly, put my arm down to catch myself, and that was it. Bigger they come and all.

It’s a common FOOSH injury. Fall on outstretched hand. Straight arm means all the weight is caught and if something gives it’s either wrist or the radial head where the humerus and radius/ulna meet (elbow joint) as the bones jam into each other. Apparently it’s the most common adult break?

Yeah, when I FOOSH I break collarbones. Done each one once a long time ago. Healing seemed so easy back then.

But injuries suck as we age. Messed my knee last year on the MX bike, had surgery, doc said come see me in 10-15 years for my replacement knee. Even though it’s 100% now, I keep thinking about it whenever i’m on the bike or playing tennis or even goofing around with my kids in the backyard. Want to still be able to walk like a normal dude when i retire.

This is by far the most depressing thread on AR. My bad lol.

Follow-up appt with my doctor today - I will be asking for a referral to PT. Need to get this thing over - stat.
