If it’s cost effective and it really works then it is a great way to avoid cracked and broken guides. Still doesn’t completely prevent it because I think heat cycles and the chains wearing away at them during normal operation is still a big part of them failing. It also doesn’t solve what a good chunk of timing failures are caused by, which i the adjusters
Of course people will jump all over this because not hearing the rattle is a wetdream for most people.
yeah its a good idea but the problems are more systematic
I’ve been keeping an eye on this thread too. I’m really interested in it if it actually works. The chain rattle in my car is barely noticeable in my car but it still annoys the hell outta me.
This… Look at most of the failures, it’s not the chain itself. It’s the other components, I’d rather have been able to hear the chain rattle, because that’d likely give you a better idea of how bad the other pieces may be getting.
As much as I hated chain rattle, it is a rather useful diagnostic tool that the car is simply providing for you
Like Joe said though, you won’t hear anything because of adjusters, if it goes bad, it goes bad. This won’t stop that from happening.
Although, and I’m just asking. . Would the introduction of oil pressure prior to engine start and chain spinning possibly help lengthen some of those other components lives as well? It’d got to be a pretty violent action back there when everything starts up at once.
I’m just saying, “hypothetically” what would be the outcome if you had two identical brand new motors with zero miles, and you installed some sort of system like this, and the other you didn’t. Obviously these parts don’t fail consistently at a certain mileage, but would something like this most likely extend the life of the part due to reduced wear?
I do agree though, that the chain rattle is a helpful warning sign. But then again, people often change oil type and are able to reduce or eliminate chain rattle. So have they helped the problem or just masked it?
It’s probably not something I’m going to do, but it is an interesting approach to look at and would like some of the knowledgeable people to speak up some more, especially CV etc. But in reality, by saving the timing chain, you’re just delaying the opportunity to go built motor! But you may need that depending on JHM’s timeline for that.
Don’t know the full details other than this, but there’s a car in the local shop whose timing chain system gave way… at 300,000 km…
I used a mobile1 0w40 oil instead of 5w40 and rattle went away immediately may be because the oil is thinner and reaches the back of the motor faster but who the hell really knows its just one of those flaws that the S4 has!!!
