lifter clatter - what's yours sound like

APR tune is probably just making your car run hotter and not doing much else :-p

Some have in the forum. The car performs best with a working manifold, as the flaps do serve a performance and drivability purpose. That said if you don’t want to pony up for a new one then I guess that’s an option.

QTP’s sound good, but other than that the interior and overall car feels worse in terms of build quality vs the s6/s8, and I’d say they haven’t really held up over time for the examples I’ve seen. Also with the right exhaust I’d say the V10 sounds much better (stock the QTP probably has the edge), and even stock s6/s8 does everything better. The QTP is a touch longer and a little more comfortable. You probably already know, but get the tru auto (post 08 I believe) not the duo crap trans.

thanks for those thoughts

I had my car a week or so prior to the APR tune. It’s decidedly faster now. And with my non-working manifold, there’s been no perceptible driving conditions change compared to my local friend’s //S6. My car runs like a raging animal - the 80-140 pull is most especially impressive to me still, and that’s coming from some heavy hitters in my sig 8-).

Agreed w/ most of your Qporte assessments. I’ve driven a duo-crap (lol) but yes would strictly be considering '09 Sport GTS’s. We’ll see. I know they’re inferior in ‘some’ ways, alas… Ferrari V8. With exhaust the V10 sounds better, compared to say a Capristo’d Qporte??? I’d argue with that heh heh!

Wheelbase is longer, and with it’s front/mid-engine layout the handling’s gotta be better - tho shame the moved away from the rear transaxle w/ the demise of the duo-crap. Fun fact: they use our verysame ZF 6HP24! Go figger.

Again, we’ll see…

Yeah, I’ve looked into those GTS, for the money they are nice. Still like the v10 exhaust note better, but a nice Ferrari derived v8 sounds good too. Yes on the same trans, first thing I checked when I looked into them.

Stock for stock handling id feel more confident throwing the s6 around. QTP has the rwd and a nice near 50/50 weight distro kinda feels like a slower e39 m5, but I’d give the nod to e39 for rwd handling and powerwise it would crush as wells. And I’d I still give an edge to the s6 with fresh suspension and with coil overs I’d imagine it’s game over

I would NOT gut the manifold. That has been done in the past and you will loose a ton of HP and TQ. Some of the dyno figures from guys that have done that show as much as 50hp and as little as 30hp as the intake is a multi stage intake that runs long runners in low rpm and short runners in high rpm. So if you gut the intake your garranteed to lose hp even if your intake is broken right now you stand to loose more hp.

What I would suggest is epoxing the runners into the long position. After all you drive about 90% of the time with the runners in the long phase. I would epoxy the flaps and the mounts. From there remove the motor connection to the flaps. You wont get a code and you will have a semi fix for the siuation. For most driving you wont see any difference and depending on how bad the intake is broken you might even pick up a little power with all the flaps shut.

With bilsteins, and a good driver, you’d be faster than almost anything in the same power-to-weight ratio range around the track… At least that’s definitely how it appeared during my experiences. I can’t imagine an M5 with RWD keeping up around track with my S6… Their tires and brakes would be dealing with more stress.

huge thanks for that input Mr. Incredible - duly noted, and I do like that approach far better than what my wrench suggested… they tend to be somewhat gorilla cavemen at times it seems lol / d’oh

will definitely do that - I’m amidst considering my options on which route makes the most sense for me

huge tangent regarding track times here but I’ve DE’d my e39 M5 and it’d run CIRCLES around my current S6, from a handling perspective

not to mention it’s considerably lighter - like 450lbs - that’s very tangible weight the tires / brakes must suffer

even on coilovers, these things are Bizarro 911’s basically with the ENTIRE motor dangling forward of the axle and 99:1 F/R weight bias… ok… so that’s a weebit an exaggeration :sunglasses: buuuuuuuuuuuut

Not sure. There was an E39 M5 at the track when I was there and I passed him more than once without a problem. Maybe the damper change and AWD makes that much of a difference. Or maybe it was just driver difference. Doubt that was the case though as it was my first track weekend ever. My driving coach did think I was sent in as a ringer though, so…

Ignore the acceleration numbers as we can’t put much faith in them, but the handling between a c6 s6 is more similar than you would think. If you go back to some of the rags the s6 held it’s own depending on the track vs the e60 M5. And I agree with that as I owned both, and sure overall the M5 handled better at its limits or quicker transitions, but up to that point the s6 was solid, and I felt more comfortable pushing harder due to awd.

Plus SIXSIX has some power adders and suspension adds that should close the gap/ possibly slightly surpass straight line speed, so it’s defitnely reasonable that the s6 in that shape could be as fast or faster than a stock e39 M5.

Either way, Sgt. tire condition, suspension condition (struts, CV boots, control arms etc, alignment) make a hue difference especially on the heavy c6 s6, even completely stock freshened it was night and day vs. parts that were only 40-50k old.

def very true on driver skill / experience

my e39 did have a tune

the S6 is certainly quite surprisingly sure-footed and confidence inspiring, I run 275s all around and it can handle pretty much anything I toss at it… just not as dynamically adept :sunglasses:

back on topic: my plan is to buy some time for now and aim to pull the manifold to seal up the flaps to run long… been wanting to add the phenolic and do a carbon clean anyway so this is my best route

I’ll report back with findings when the time comes…

I thought you couldn’t split the intake and reassemble it?
