Need some input on possible purchase

Hi everyone. I have a B5 S4 but currently looking to get in to a B6/B7 S4 avant 6MT as a daily driver… which is definitely a lot harder to find than I thought :-\

I really want a B7. Newer and I just really prefer the front end on those cars over the B6. But I have been looking for awhile now and nothing is coming up. There is a white one on AZ right now that I was looking in to and been in contact with the seller, but he disappeared and I haven’t heard anything for a close to two weeks now so Im not sure what going on with that thing.

Anyways, I think I found one but just wanted to get some quick help/recommendations on what I should look for in these cars. Im not too familiar with this platform but would love to get in to one soon!
Some info on the car is:
-2005 black on black 6spd
-111,000mi
-The entire engine was replaced 15,000 miles ago because a cylinder was out of round and was replaced under warranty by Audi.

  • car is completely stock. Interior looks in pretty good condition from pictures.
  • It has been under audi warranty and serviced through Audi on time and as needed.
  • Standard features. No Nav.

I would normally never consider buying a used car with this amount of miles. But the basically brand new engine is making me consider it.

My questions are…
-what would you guys pay for a car like that? Does the brand new engine make the car worth more than it would be priced otherwise? Do I need to worry about anything else that comes along with the engine being replaced?

  • what should I look at chassis wise? The car is a snow car…

I was trying to wait for a B7 to pop up but I might be waiting for a long time. On the good side of that… I would be saving a good amount of money over a good mileage B7 by possibly picking up this one and that would be some extra cash for some immediate mods. Tune, DPS, exhaust, suspension

Any help would be appreciated guys! If Im going to fly all the way out and take a look at the car I would like to know the major things to inspect personally when I get out there. He has all service records and those look clean.

Thanks!

I’d pay about 13-14 for that car. Sounds like a solid car. New motor hurts it in my eyes if I’m a random buyer. But since non of us here are randoms, we know the value of that new motor. I’d do it. B6 is better anyway lol

A few questions I Would ask is. On the motor is the motor new or manufactured or used.

If its new then the car would be a great deal.

knowing its a south car or a car with no snow adds more value as well.

The B7 adds lots of little comfort gadgets that you don’t get in the B6. This alone makes me like the B7s more.

From what Ive seen the B6 & B7 S4s are about as solid as they come. The biggest issues tend to be the motor. This one your speaking of could be a great deal.

Price wise there all over the map. Its hard to say.

As far as it being driven in a snowy climate. My B7 started life in NY and has been in MN ever since. The first time I got under this thing I was absolutely amazed at how little the salt effected it. I don’t know if B6s have any rust issues but I doubt it. Germany is a snowy climate and these Audis seem to stand up very well in them. The only thing that it seems to effect, besides the occasional stubborn nut/bolt, is the front end of the car. More grit on the highways makes for a front end that probably has some paint chips on the bumper and hood.

Check if the AC unit has been replaced. And when driving pay close attention to the sychros, especially 3rd gear. Not much to worry about since it has a new engine.

If it is indeed a brand spanking new engine from Audi I’d pay $16k for it. I’m sure some people will think I’m crazy but everyone goes crazy over MT S4 Avants so that makes me sane…right?..lol. Seriously though, the engine is almost worth that alone and I assume the engine will be under warranty for a while longer.

A good start on mods:
Piggies - Either a weekend project or $300 from JHM (O2s relocated with spacers so no CEL w/o tune)
Cat Back - $700ish(Magnaflow) --> $1200ish(Fast Intentions)
JHM Tune - $550
Snub Mount - $35

Awesome, thanks for the info guys!

I will make sure and take a look at what everyone has mentioned.
The brand new engine is definitely a plus on this thing. I just hope the rest of the car/interior is in as good of condition as the owner says and what the pictures show.

Apat - thanks for the info on dealing with the snow. The car has been a snow car its entire life so that made me a little nervous. You made some very good points about this being a German car and made for the snow!
I will definitely be doing all the mods you mentioned as soon as I get a car. But probably go with some FI 2.5" DPs to start with.

Again, thanks for the help everyone.

^^Nice. FI DPs are a little spendy but no one will question their quality and performance.

FI catless would be great, but are definitely more loot. FI catted I would skip personally. The cat location kinda sucks and they’re expensive as hell.

Milltek catless are good, but they have a neckdown that your exhaust shop should cut off and weld in 2.5" stainless.

I would definitely do catless downpipes, go with Trexturk DP’s

Ok well looking after the service reports it is a remanufactured engine. Do you or anyone know more about these rebuilt engines? I mean remanufactured engines are just ones that are used engines, then stripped down, replaced with parts (not always new ones), and built back up, correct? Or does Audi have some different standard for rebuilt engines?
Thanks for the help

Audi has a 12 year rust warranty. Spoke to a service manager at the dealership once (as I have a tiny rust spot starting to form (still in minor bubble status but don’t want it to get worse). The service manager confirmed the 12 year warranty and said Audi doesn’t want any of its cars driving around with rust. They consider it a bad image on the brand. Makes sense and all the better for us.

Is this just rust from the inside though? i.e excluding stone chips?
