New Guy here - Intro: Just another Imola

Welcome man

They dont look too bad. If the car is at DTC On the one side then it is out of sync. Not too far out but it would be interesting to see if you can roll it back into sync. I wouldnt put too much work into the heads. Just replace the seals and check the cylinder walls.

So far looks good. Once you pull the heads off you will be able to tell if the cams were far enough out to cause any issues.

So would I be okay just pulling the heads scraping them down and throwing a new HG and bolts back on once I replace the seals and check the bores?

Welp pulled the timing and pulled the heads and seems like nothing is wrong here.

Driver side bank. Some carbon build up

Passenger side bank. Some scoring in the first cylinder but nothing really to worry about.

I’m just clueless where to go now… The adjusters seemed reasonably good little to wallowing of the sprockets and the cylinders look good. So… Idk. Gonna buy the kits and reassemble and start looking into the electrical adjuster for the driver side and what not. Jeep everyone updated.

Pulled both of the electrical adjusters. Tested the passenger side with a 12v source both polarities and everything checked out. Proceeded to check the drive side and nothing happened with both polarities as well. So from this I deduced that I had an electrical adjuster failure.

So now gonna source another adjuster and continue with the timing service and hopefully wrap this up before Xmas but we’ll see.

sounds like that might be it. The cams were off but were they off on the side with the bad adjuster you tested.

The good news is you needed to do the service anyways. The one cracked guide leads to other issues very quickly

The cams were a bit off on the side with the bad adjuster. So makes sense. When i put the lockbars on the side with the good adjuster they went in more easily than the driver. So ya. Got another electrical adjuster on the way. New HG’s valve seals and timing components in the way too. Get this thing closed up and wait for enough $$ for the jhm lwfw clutch combo

Progress pic. Did the valves seals. These took forever. Didn’t really have the right tool but we made it work with an o2 sensor and I fabricated another socket for the intake valves.

Got the heads on with new gaskets properly torqued. Just need to get some o-rings for the cam adjusters and I’ll have the upper half of the timing done and I’ll be in business. Can’t wait for this thing to purr again.

Looks good one step at a time.

Not sure what on fire in the picture you might want to look into that too lol. The rest should be easy for this point.

Well I’ve been dormant for a while however finally got the car running this past weekend and I am back in love with this thing. Drives strong runs strong. Idles fine. Had some snags with the power steering. Believe I ruptured the supply line from the reservoir to the pump upoj pulling the engine but I replaced that line and no more pissing fluid. Only have about 250 miles on it as of now. Been keeping it in the low rpm range. Kinds scared to take it to redline but it’ll happen eventually. Here’s some pics for the likes.

Oh man that would suck but it looks like it should be all smooth from here

This makes me want to buy a throw-away junker car and start pulling my engine. LOL good job! !

Thanks man. Yeah having a 96 Passat as my DD junker helped me be very thorough and not rush anything. Very happy got it done. Drove for the past 3 days while it was 70 outside and today snowed 15 inches so it’s back in the garage. Ha. That’s Colorado for ya.

Well after only two weeks of driving I managed to shred a tire to the point of it popping some how and my rebuilt axles somehow shredded the brand new boots already. So now back on jack stands however I managed to order some intake parts in the mean time while I re do my suspension tires and axles.

Going to wrap the intake and make an airbox down there in the fog light well so I’ll be sure to post some pics of that as the project progresses.
Definitely just ordered adjustable control arms and tie rods so the new tires last a little longer.

Your car is super cool. I live the engine bay there. It makes me want to powder coat my valve covers and super charger. Good stuff.

Sucks to hear on the tire. Was it just too much camber?? Should be able to get some of that camber back with the adjustable arms.
