New Thermostat for S4

Thanks Joe for clarification. Definitely and unfortunately i really don’t think its a leak. Any chance a PCV valve could just be faulty?? It was replaced last summer/fall before winter storage.

We will get to the bottom of this! Wish I didnt have to wait til monday for these damn tests >:(

Yeah it could just be a bad valve out of the box. trexturk had the same thing happen to him when he put a brand new OEM valve on his car. Hopefully that’s what it is

Don’t rule out rings or piston skirt.

Any way to test the PCV system?

What kind of repair (hours/labor-wise) are bad rings or a bad piston skirt?

VC gasket leaks may not show up on the garage floor due to the skid plate. I dont think there’s a test for the PCV. But if your consumption increased at the same time the valve was replaced last year then its probably faulty.

From everything I’ve read… A ring job (sounds dirty…lol) is a bad idea for 4.2 S4/RS4 engines. You probably can’t even find a mechanic to do it and offer any sort of guarantee. But maybe someone will chime in and bring up an example of a successful ring replacement.

You should do what saki suggested and watch for smoke at start up. If no smoke go in for a compression test. If failed or borderline (under 130ea iirc) get leakdown tested and borescoped.
