Port and Polish Intake Manifold Discussion

;D ;D

you can’t beat the Poles for making intake manifolds. Truly exceptional work.

On another note, does that guy still do this work? I thought he said he won’t anymore. Seems like before doing that I would get

JHM tune/2.75" downpipes/2.75" catback/intake spacers and crank pulley/lightweight rotors if needed/LWFW and stage III clutch…and then and only then would I consider this mod. Even at that point, I might instead say screw it. $650 is 1/17th of the way to an APR supercharger kit (if the new $11,000 price is true)…and probably 1/15th of the way to a truly devistating JHM supercharger kit.

me too

I think this mod might be worth wile once people start pumping more air into these cars. A JHM charger will dramatically increase the amount of air, so a mod liek this could be worth while. Then on the other side of things, the blower has enough headroom to more than make up for any IM inefficiencies and still produce the same amount of power.

Interesting. Awesome that Audi didn’t leave tons of power on the table with the RS4. Besides exhaust and tune, they’re pretty much perfect.

^ I think the second part of your first paragraph is the real point to think about.

I’d like count’s perspective on the blower vs IM at some point in time on both cars. No doubt it could be beneficial. . .but how much is the question imo.

Yeah I wouldn’t mind Count coming in and letting us know his thoughts. I have heard that polishing the intake is not advisable because the turbulent air helps mix with the fuel - to me this makes sense, but I am no expert

I’ve heard this too.

The flip side - which Richi’s comment made me think of because his I/M is sitting n their shop - even if JHM doesn’t feel the P&P is worthwhile, they still have some other aspects to look at for improvement. For example the flap/actuator arms. Maybe come up with a stronger light weight alternative…that can be removed installed! This way when the plastic ones break you can but JUST the replacement parts and know they are high quality and will last a long time. Since they have Richi’s to play with - I assume Richi would be ok with this? - This might be an avenue to explore?

Well for what it’s worth, JHM does not polish the S4 intake manifold runners. The leave it with a rough brushed-like surface.

i mean the I/M is theres now… all id be able to do with it is make some sort of crazy bong out of it… its better off in their hands lol. im happy that it could go to a positive use to help out this platform in any way. there is a very special place in my heart for the rs4 and the more love i can give the better it is for everyone here

keep in mind the RS4 is direct injection so fuel mixes with air in the combustion chamber.

Other than that, i know a few oldschool vw heads that dont follow the “rough surface equates to better mixture” theory. i was taught from the start, smoother is better. my one buddy had the most powerful all motor CIS 16v in the world and his intake manifold runner as well as his head ports, intake and exhaust, were mirro polished. you could see your nose hairs in them. he even cut his manifold into multiple pieces just to mirror polish the inside plenum and runners and weld it back together and saw a considerable increase for that work. now we are talking 5-10 hp on a 2 liter 4 cylinder on oem management tuning it himself. so double that in terms of or motors. and with us scratching for every bit of power due to be NA, id take it

that IS what they looked at. Don’t forget the JHM B6/7 intake manifold project. Its not like they looked at the flap and actuator on the b6/7 but ignored it on the RS4. Quite the opposite. On top of their own ideas, they also looked at the RS4 for some ideas as quattro made some cool changes.

With carbon cleaning becoming more and more common, and guys/shops breaking intake manifolds (even Audi on yours lol) it would be a good idea for JHM to make a couple of replacement parts to prevent binning all these intake manifolds. They’re not cheap, and are made of some high end materials too. Shame for them to be wasted.

p.s. they always remind me of a turtle shell

did he ever put the stock intake manifold on a flow bench? It looks like a very solid design, I bet at stockish flow rates there is probably limited pressure loss, so porting isnt gonna do a whole lot.

dunno. Maybe he should check in to this thread. He’s still doing this work…someone on quattroworld made a thread about getting it done recently.

I installed this on my car a couple years back. It has port and polish, as well as flap and vane delete. I did a before and after dyno on my car with this mod, and saw 7whp up top from 6k to 8k RPM.

I used the same stock air filter before and after, and the car at that time was in very stock condition. Dyno was on a Mustang, same conditions, raining and 50 degrees. Put this on in the early winter. Of course this needs to be said from Dyno #1 to Dyno #2 even on the same day there can be a variation of a couple HP even if nothing else changed. So true gains are probably anywhere from 3whp to 9whp. A few guys who have actually reported back on it see 5-7whp.

To me its a very nice mod, and $650 is a great deal considering how much work Tim puts into it. Tim is a true details guy. I have never heard a single person have any complaints on his port and polish work.

7whp is not huge, its small, but the car is smoother up top, and the kick at 5500rpm is a bit more noticeable. And given the IM has to come off every carbon clean, the true cost to do this is simply what Tim charges and shipping.

Downsides? I am not sure if there are any downsides to the port and polish work. Removing the flaps and vanes are another issue. Some people are not too happy about the way the car runs if you start cold, and drive instantly, without warming up. I warm my car up to low idle every time before i drive, so i dont have this issue. If you can’t wait 90 seconds to start driving after start up, then you may not want to remove the flaps and vanes.

OT but related to this thread:

Anyone else notice there are random words with “***” in them for no apparent reason?? It’s not like it was a web site name drop or anything similar. Weird.

its because of n e f m o t o being censored.

i.e.

i n e f f i c i e n t = inefficient
m o t o r = motor

Even JHMotorsports isn’t safe lol.

I have PM’d god about it.

he (Tim) has already discussed this on audizine with ppl like the guy above saki’s post beemer.

you quoted saki and this isn’t audizoo.

anyway, I’m sure it’s a nice mod. As I said on the previous page, I think you need to have exhausted your other options before going after this one. $100/hp is pretty tough to eat although it’s kinda funny that this is pretty much what the APR and TTS supercharger kits cost.
