cstarky, it’s coming from the front, right behind the radiator, so i don’t think it would be tied to the common oil filter housing problem, since that’s at the back. definitely need to get in there and clean the area to try and pinpoint where it’s emanating from. just wish it would have presented itself back when the radiator blew and the front end was off to replace. oh, and the airbag light just came on. i’ll need to scan when i get home tonight. this car requires endless amounts if energy to keep running, but it still puts a smile on my face when i drive it. guess that’s why i haven’t traded it in yet.
Oil from a bad filter gasket collects in the back of the V but there is a little drain hole in the front (driver side) of the V where it dribbles out.

ahhhh, thanks cstarky and mixofia. forgot about the v drain to the front for that oil filter housing gasket. that could possibly be it. it’s definitely shaded toward stage left (drivers). looks like i’ll be pulling the IM when I get a free weekend. on a slightly separate topic, just pulled codes from my airbag light and my second front crash sensor just went bad. replaced the other one in July after airbag light. is this typical?

This is correct. The oil starts at the back by the oil filter itself but the block has a slight tilt forward and the oil puddles and goes through the leak holes and poors down the front of the block. If you see oil between the cylinder heads at the lower part of the block just under the intake manifold there is a good chance that your oil filter gasket is done. But then again there is a good chance that your valve cover gaskets are done too.
c.scott, it’s pretty simple to check if the sensor itself is bad. just switch driver and passenger side. each throws a different code. so, if the code changes side upon switch, then you know the sensor is bad. the sensors are right below the air inlets to the airbox. the biggest pain is disconnecting the battery and getting the connector off. the part is $125 from genuinevwaudiparts. i just ordered another one.
justin, the good thing is that i just did the valve cover gaskets a few months ago, so it’s probably not that. i think it’s got to be the filter housing gasket. i’m ordering one of those as well.
