Bees swarming in my backyard…

https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8705/16907323815_a653016e7c_z.jpg

did they just show up out of the blue? That’s what happens when a bike of bees goes on a trip and the queen lands somewhere. They all swarm around. It’s pretty crazy.

Hopefully they were relocated safely…bees are on the decline pretty dramatically the past 10-20 years.

Completely out of the blue. My wife was gardening, and heard a “buzz” that got louder and louder. She looked up and saw a swarm of angry bees about 30 feet up flying in circles. After a few hours, they calmed down and landed in a tree in our backyard.

My brother-in-law (pictured) keeps bees, and was totally psyched to get a “free” queen. He smoked them, cut the branch out of our tree with all the bees, and took it home to start a new hive.

He was 100% positive that someone nearby didn’t split their hive in time (spring), which leads to a big piece of the hive seeking a new home.

Win for everybody, except the hole in our tree.

that’s cool. Good on him for beekeeping.

So it was one of those new queen, new hive thing but someone didn’t give them a new spot, so they bolted? Bummer for that guy losing 8,000 bees lol.

It’s neat that they’re territorial like that. I had a monster white faced hornet nest in a tree in my backyard last summer. They stung the shit out of me when I was mowing the lawn one day. Just left them and took the nest down in the fall when they had vacated it.

Exactly. Somewhere is a pissed off beekeeper finding out that only 20% of his hive is left.

Regarding hornets - I steer clear of those dudes. There were some out hunting the bees yesterday. Nature at work!

My neighbor keeps bees. Works awesome for me as they amble over and pollinate everything for me and I don’t have to deal with any hassle.
