Thats a lot of smoke I feel… what do you all think…
What’s the back story behind all this? Why was it rebuilt and who did it.
Doesn’t look like you’re burning oil or coolant. Looks like its running very rich. Smoke looks dark gray-black from my end
Engine was burning 3 qts of oil every 1k miles… tore the block apart and found two piston rings failed… re-ringed the entire engine… this is after i got the car back and put like 600 miles on the “new” engine… Danbury Audi did the work… in person the smoke comes out blue and smells like burning oil…
Ruh roh. Why didn’t you take it back to Audi?
Its going to have to go back… I’ve never herd of such a thing… a $75k sport sedan smoking that much on startup… oh and keep in mind this is after i got a bill for $4,000 to do the rings… :-[
who paid for the repair
its still being worked out, thats the bill that was presented to me… it has not been paid yet.
Did you pay out of pocket or was this warranty work? If it was the latter, you should have just pushed for a crate motor.
sub1427, how long did you drive the car with it burning oil like that?
I wonder because it took a long ass time for the cats the clean out when I had a 2.0T with a stuck open fuel injector come in - like 2K miles. To be honest I was amazed the cat didn’t fail because one that came in earlier failed in 500 miles after.
I’m interested. 4k bill??
IF it was eating that much oil you can expect a good amount of that to still be in the cats. If the rings were bad your putting fuel and oil in the cats. While the gas will have evaporated there is going to be a left over trase of it.
Also condinsation on start up till the block warms up is going to be normal there is going to be a small amount of water in the cats. This will also cause this to happen.
This isn’t 100% to say there isn’t still an issue. Just a few things for you to think about.
As others stated, I would bring it back to the dealer. If the smoke is blue in person and smells like burning oil in person, I would suspect an issue is still present. I was also told that the cats would burn off the oil and it may tale some time…after I received my new short block, same dp’s, I never had a hint of smoke present fwiw. When they first tried fixing the issue by replacing my heads a few months earlier, still had smoke…cuz the problem was not really the heads.
I’m very interested in the fact that they did a ring job on an RS4. My dealer said they do tons of rebuilds/ring replacement 2.0FSI’s and other motors, never the RS4 because AOA states it’s not a servicable job. Primarily due to the lack of cylinder wall material/space etc to do it properly.
Jimmybones, as an ex-audi-tech, have you ever heard what I was told? Or, have you ever done or witnessed a ring replacement job on an RS4 engine?
Jimmy, I bought the car 3 months ago, i had to add oil often, like 3 qts every 1000 miles often… Just got the car back a week ago after the $4k bill and guess what??? oil light came on, engine still smokes and this is after like 500 miles of driving… I don’t know how much oil has to be burned off before the check oil light comes on but full from the dealer to light on in 500 miles… that aint right…
NY07RS4… That was the original plan was to just fit me with a new short block… audi agreed to it and everything, then one of the techs agreed it just needed to be re-ringed…so my $1200 new block install bill skyrocketed to $4k because of all the extra labor involved… and guess what… I bet she needs a block after all of this… How do I go about justifying this money I’ve spent to the dealer… I mean if you bought a nice TV and it didn’t work you take it back… of course i have to take it back but I don’t want to get stuck with ANOTHER bill ya know…
you have a work order and reciepts right? I’d call/go see the service manager and demand that it be fixed for free. The work they did did not fix the issue, they need to resolve it. If the response isnt they are going to fix it at no cost to you call Audi of America. I wouldn’t pay anything more, but you may have to be a hemeroid to get that done.
What Beem said is logical.
Not to sound harsh but it sounds like you got hosed. If the dealer or AoA AGREED to pay for a short block but you had to pay for the labor($1,200)…and they ended up deciding to do rings instead (did they consult with you first?) and charge you ($4,000)…how the hell does that make any sense??? Especially from a financial standpoint from your perspective. Are these people not quoting you prices prior to doing work on your car? It just doesn’t make sense to me.
Where’d you buy the car?
When?
Sounds like you’re having a lot of problems with your RS4…maybe “sell as mint and buy a gt3?”
I did a few piston rings (T-belt 2.0T) and pistons with rings (Chain 2.0T) jobs and I thought those were the only engines that AOA felt comfortable going into. When it came to the V8s the technical assistance guys always got real nervous tearing it apart. For example we had a V8 S4 that was consuming oil from valve stem seals right after I had replaced one for scored cylinder walls and the technical assistance guys said they would just ship a long block anyways because they didn’t feel comfortable with the tech tearing the heads off.
That is why it is weird to hear of a dealer replacing piston rings on a RS4. If I had to bet there are probably scored cylinder walls just like with a V8 S4 and the engine is still F-ed.
Sounds like you got screwed because the techs wanted more labor hours. Not saying it didn’t happen when I was at the dealership but right now I would think you have the dealer by the balls. If it were me I would go back and raise hell but that approach sometimes does more bad then good.
Jimmy thanks for the reply… I will drop the car off today with a list of issues I am having. I’m debating on if I should raise hell or not I will keep everyone posted
