RS4 engine rebuild

I know, but some noob might not unfortunately. Read your post from the perspective of someone who bought an RS4 last week.

As for keeping it on topic, nobody is doing due dilligence on engine rebuilding. Just JHM. So there’s the on-topic. The first company they brought on board to do the engine rebuilds found they were in over their heads. Someone in the US actually bought a built BHF direct from them I recall. Not sure what happened to them, but JHM found a huge problem in the process, and changed companies. Even then they found problems. They’re in for probably $100,000 or more at this point to produce built motors and even then are revamping the process still. I believe the final process (vs revision 1 or 2) they are following is exclusive to JHM so even buying direct will not be the same. So dicey…I don’t think I’d want to be a trail blazer. Being a trail blazer is expensive, energy sapping, and ultimately leads to unfinished cars that are sold off.

Costs based on ECS tuning prices. Assuming you found someone to sleeve the block.
New rings: $1136 ($142 each piston set)
Upper rod bearings: $280 ($35 each)
Lower rod bearings: $280 ($35 each)
rod bolts: $288 ($18 each)
Main bolts: ?
Thurst washer set: $32
Front Crank seal:$33
Rear Crank Seal: $46
Crank Bearings Upper: $26 each X5? (130)
Crank Bearings Lower: $26 each X5? (130)
Cylinder head bolts: $20 each X 20? (400)
VCG:$40 (20 each)
Cylinder head gaskets: $170 (85 each)

so assuming you do this your self, you are looking at $3K in parts alone not including sleeving costs and unexpected part repairs.

Based off that you MIGHT be able to do your own rebuild/sleeve fore $7500. Yes ECS is probably not the best place for getting part costs but puts a pretty good perceptive on how much VALUE you are really getting out of a JHM built motor lol.

What?? Are you really assuming JHM is just sleeving and rebuilding with stock components? That is foolish.

I’m sure if that is what you wanted, they may do it. But they are rebuilding motors to make big power. They more than likely have custom designed everything rods/pistons, ring setup.

It looks like your somehow insinuating JHM is going to make loads of money off of these motor builds. Hell, they will probably struggle to break even for a while.

…and all the while you say this, JHM is doing things like redesigning tmiing components for the BHF to save guys from paying crazy OEM prices. They will probably cut the chain job parts cost in half! Who else is doing this shit for the B6/7 S4 & B7 RS4 platforms? No one so I’m not sure what method of thinking your using. I like your projects and loved your past car, but sometimes you sound as lot as the new crowd.

Well, getting a sleeved or built motor likely means you’re going ahead with a serious power adder.

Knowing that, who in their right mind would go built motor and then put in the stock internals?? That person would be jogging in clown shows as they say.

Having held the revised internals JHM has custom made for their RS4 program in my hand, I can assure you that it is far more comprehensive than figuring out how to get a sleeve to stick.

No, I am saying for 10K (BHF) you are getting a sleeved, upgraded internals etc and assembled by a professional, puts into perceptive how good of a deal it really is. There are a lot of people that think the price tag is crazy, but adding up up parts alone on a rebuild makes you think twice.

LOL sounds like you guys took my comment out of context and everyone just clarified their thoughts at the same time stating the exact same thing. Yes I know JHM is doing far more then sleeving the blocks, I have spoken to Jake about it a few times and the little info he has been able to tell was that they found some weak points (not the block)

Remember I simply started this thread to look into the means of getting a block (that had scored cylinder walls) rebuilt for the time being to enjoy the car during the summer considering good blocks are few and far between. That said, if everything goes as planned I should have a good engine next week hopefully.

huh? No confusion from me. You quoted pricing on stock internals, which is entirely irrelevant.

There I have tried to clarify what I mean. Basically if you have the time to wait for the built motor program to be released great, if you HAVE to have your car running your shit out of luck haha.

I can promise you this. If you get a decent used motor in that Rs4, and get it running, you will forget all about that 2.7t and wonder what you were thinking.

Lol I have no doubt a supercharged rs4 would do that.

I would agree some used motors can be in bad shape. A good compression check followed by a leak down test before purchasing would be a smart move to reduce the chances of getting burnt. Per your original post looking for thoughts I thought I would share what I’ve seen.

No doubt, RS engines are not plagued by the BHF block problems either which is nice.

Fingers crossed we can say the same about the S5 motors.

So found an engine on eBay (Europe) with 50km on it, all service records and a 1 month warranty. Waiting on a shipping quote but might pull the trigger on it. Seems like the best option right now.

SO…is the single turbo project scrapped? or are you the type of guy that starts 10 projects at a time and finishes none?

Nope, not really at a reasonable price. One guys asking 15k for a motor with 95k miles lol. It’s looking like its cheaper to get something shipped.
