S5 4.2 JHM Tune Review

Only 2 cats on the RS5 exhaust like Sky said. I can’t believe how close to the engine they are too. I thought having them so close to the engine caused hear soak?

They’re referring to piggying the pipes Sky. Which is when you gut the pre cats for more flow to get more power and better sound.

Depending on how you want to look at it. There are 4 cats. There is the pre cat and almost no gap and then a main cat. The A8 and my 3.0 A4 have this sake design. 8th terrible.

The oxygen sensor placement gives it away since the rear oxygen sensor bung is only half way through and then it has a big portion behind that for the main cat.

The S4 has the cats the same place as the RS5, just aft of the exhaust manifolds up against the fire wall…hot!!! Jimmy, aren’t those resonators on the down pipes numbered 1 and 2?

at the end of that section, yes those are the first resonators

but if you look at the ‘pig-in-the-python’ right after the exhaust manifold, it is actually 2 catayltic converters in there.

#1 is pointing to the pre-catalyst o2 sensor bung. That little circle. There’s another one half way through the bulge…that’s where the post catalyst o2 sensor goes. Then you have another catalyst after that, then pipe and resonators etc to the tips.

So there are 4 cats, 2 on each side. They’re just both housed in the same bulge. Gutting them would be nightmarish I’d say. You’d have to take the whole exhaust off, and try to angle in there while it’s on the car. Guess you’d need a good vacuum and a scope to see how well done it was. Or you could pull the engine to really get at them.

this thread is so hijacked lol

back on topic - the S5 tune!

More time behind the wheel and more impressions.

This car is FASTER now.

I’ve GOTTA have 50 more horses at the crank just from the tune/exhaust.

any plans to take it to the track?

not with the stock clutch; we’ve seen first hand that the launch aggravates the clutch enough to necessitate a 1.5 second 1-2 shift.

would be interesting to see what it is. 50 might be a bit high. JHM added about 5-6 mph of trap speed with tune and catless full exhaust. That’s about 50 hp.

Yes the S5 clutch stock kinda sucks. It won’t hold up if you jhm tune and exhaust the car. It’s almost like they put a A4 clutch in the S5.

The standard clutch will hold the power but you need to be very gentle with it, no hard changes or launches.

It held perfectly well with my 1320 for years, it was until I upgraded to the 1740 that I needed to change clutches. When we pulled the stock unit out it was still fine.

It’s a year later; I’ve put a billion more miles on the car (I commute 30 miles a day and run around everywhere on top of that) and the clutch is still fine, still holds the power, but you sure still can’t launch it.

I’m thinking back to the Top Gear in Italy when Richard’s Noble’s clutch failed pretty majestically…seemingly just while he was driving along. Part of me is waiting for that to happen…

Glad you are still happy for a year, any itch for more, or you feel this is how it should have come from the factory and you are good now  they can mount the S/C just saying tho

I am pretty sure that thenewbruno lives in Canada and JHM has kept a lot of the info quiet on the blower. Jake still hasn’t released how fast they have run yet. JHM likely is not comfortable shipping the kit yet.

Makes sense didn’t really realize he was in Canada.

I was just talking conceptually around his plans even with unknowns, and his happiness with the tune

Yes it would be interesting to hear his thoughts a year out after getting the JHM tune

I mentioned the Noble’s clutch because well if my clutch were to go I’d need to get a JHM clutch/flywheel. Aww shucks, my clutch went on me, now I have to upgrade

I’ve been lead to believe that since I’m in Canada where there’s good DA and 94 octane pump gas that my car could perhaps beat JHM’s 12.6 if I kept going with modifications, and yeah they’re gonna happen.

I’m torn between cat pipes and race pipes though. The race pipes are obviously less expensive and provide more power but not emissions legal and…how loud is my car going to be? I love how it is now but I could do with a bit more but not too much more. I go back and forth. Heck you only live once etc. I don’t think I’m going to find anyone local with a JHM exhaust and race pipes to taste test.

Maybe it would be good to be driving a cigarette boat around town.

Honeslty if your system is designed right there I not a ton to difference in sound. I’d rather do catless if you like it or need the emissions equipment set t in a way that you could remove the test pipes and install HFC. Also how does Canada get 94 so easily  I have 93 on east coast heard that’s better than Cali 91 piss as well

I bet you could pull off 12.8-12.9 as is with your 94 octane possibly even 12.8? That’s impressive with such Manila mods for an NA!

I am catless and exhaust note is fine under normal load and cruising speed. Punch it and it roars. Should clarify my car is a c5 4.2 allroad. I am guessing the S5 is more refined. Talk to Kelvin (boosted-s5?)

And 93 east coast gas is not even comparable to CA91. Head and shoulders above. Not even a question

The S5 is pretty loud when it goes catless non resonated. Some might say retarded loud.

Is your exhaust res or non research?

As for cats vs catless I have cats if that tells you anything. I don’t think they’re holding me back too much.
