S6 Wheels and Tires

It would be intereting to find out. I too have seen people have issues with people with 10s. I see more guys use 9 0r 9.5 guess it still depends on the backspacing of each rim as well

I think I have about 15mm backspace clearance in the rear, and 10mm in the front (before it would hit the control arm).

As I said, my wheels are 10 wide +40, so you can use an offset calculator from there. Backspacing is determined by the offset.

I just checked ETKA. The rear panels are the same p/n for A6/S6, so they are not wider. The fronts are a different p/n, so that settles it. Only the front is wider.

That would be why my rears scrub before the fronts do.

If you’re happy with the look of the 255s on the 10" wheel, they might fit… but with a +33 offset I think you are pushing it. It would be a bit worse with the 9.5s. Depends how much camber you are going to run, and how aggressively you will work the guards.

Wheels and car look clean overall! Any shots from the front, that grille looks aggressive!

Wheels look good! Was looking at going with the same ones, but darker.

Which ST Coilovers? Do they make a kit for our cars I’m missing? I’d like to get my car sitting a little lower, but can’t justify the cost of KW right now… Also, since I’ve started looking for an S7, I can’t justify replacing good suspension with expensive coilovers. ST may be the right price.

Does anyone have a 18" wheel setup they could share? I was looking for a set of light weight 18’s and some ““meat”” – just worried about the front calipers clearing…

"would this be better in a new thread…? "

If you want to do 18s then I would get these: http://www.evasivemotorsports.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=EM&Product_Code=ADVAN-GT-1890-5112-45&Category_Code=Advan_GT

The S6 uses 385 mm front brakes and those wheels are like the TCIII wheels that are made to clear 390 mm rotors so they should clear. Plus they are a decent offset at +45 and stock is +52. They will poke out a little bit just like if you were running 7 mm spacers on stock wheels. Plus they are 5x112 PCD so you don’t have to get them redrilled like I have to since the TCIII version that I like is 5x114.3. I might be biased a little bit for Advan wheels though.

These are mine on my s8. They are oem 18" wheels from an a8. No clearance issues. 255/45/18 I believe are the winter tires I went with.

I’m running 18" Hartmann HR8 wheels with 245/45-18 snow tires for my winter set. The larger side wall makes the overall rolling diameter almost the same as the OE size wheels/tires so there’s no additional fender gap or anything.

No issue at all clearing calipers/brakes. Additionally, the extra side wall make for a more comfortable ride.

I’m tempted to go with a 18x10 or 18x9 wheel with a 275/45-18 tire for my summer tire/wheels as well.

Those are 18s wow it still looks like there isnt a big gap. The S8 comes with 20s right. Its odd to think that 18s fit that well. Do you know the offset spacing on the S8 rims.

Those wheels do look good on the S8.

Justin, according to ECS the stock S8 wheels are ET45 for both of the offered OEM wheels.

Sounds to me like your new rims are not “hub centric”. If this is the case, then the hole behind the center cap (the “center bore”) does not perfectly match the factory hub/axle. Normally, rims fit over factory hub perfectly, which centers the wheel. Otherwise, you would use “hub centric rings” to fill the gap between the hub and the hole in the center of the rim. Not being “hub centric” means that the wheel is not centered on the hub. At high speed, this manifests itself as vibration.

This video does an excellent job of showing you what these rings are on an aftermarket rim, versus what you see on a stock rim, including what it looks like installed on the vehicle:

You might be cornering too aggressively as a habit, combined with not rotating your tires often enough. I used to get this sorta tire wear when I was around 20 years old, give or take a few years. If you’re putting on a lot of miles, and if your alignment is good, then tire rotation and lotsa cornering could be your problem. Otherwise, if you have no mechanical symptoms, then it’s probably an alignment issue. If you get an alignment, then get a print out following the alignment to show that it was actually/properly done.

When/if you solve this tire wear problem, and/or solve the vibration problem, please let us know!

I didn’t think it was a good idea to rotate tyres on the S6 due to the different geometry on the different axles?

Plus one on the 18 s8 wheels look much bigger. Bet it’s a tank in the snow!

Purpleaardvark, that is a good point. I didn’t know that, but I just glanced on Google and it looks like the concensus is that tire rotation is “not recommended” for the S6. That being said, I suspect this is somewhat open to semantics and interpretation.

Mechanically, on an all wheel drive, maybe Audi’s “not recommended” amounts to “not necessary”, instead of meaning that “Audi recommends that you do NOT do this because it will cause damage/problems”. In other words (I assume), on a Quattro car, tire rotation is not necessary in order to prevent uneven tire wear.

I’m not an Audi tech, and I’m not an automotive engineer, BUT, mechanically, if you consider two wheel alignment scenarios, then my advice might make sense in illumiNateV10’s specific situation. If a car’s wheels have the camber set specifically for the race track, where the car is constantly leaning heavy into turns, then the tires will show uneven wear if you drive them “normally” on city streets for the life of the tire. On the other hand, if the usual/stock alignment is done with camber settings catering to “normal” or “luxury” or “touring” style driving, then you’ll see uneven wear on the steering tires if you drive a spirited car on the streets like it’s track day sometimes (which illumiNateV10 says he does).

Might not be the solution to his problem. Might not be necessary to rotate. Might not be recommended by Audi. Just puttin it out there for consideration, ya know. I’ve always rotated my tires and I’ve been driving Quattro cars for years.
