Congrats man. Best long run call in my opinion as well. Could be worse, my JHM orders page looks like a receipt for a new S4. Gotta make sure I have my toy before wife and kids though
He is already deep enough in man. Yes it would be nice to have a built motor but that is a whole another ball game. We are also on a hard deadline so this has to be done right the first time.
I want a built motor for my car but I am not even on the waiting list for it. They are not taking any more people/orders at the moment. It sounds like JHM really wants to get the process streamlined before they take any more.
Your doing a great job and it WILL be worth it when you’ve finished.
I know exactly what your going through where you have a plan and a budget and like you, mine too went WAY over what I’d planned on spending, but like you know I have a great engine that should last quite a while, that I have total confidence in.
Great thread and now mine’s back together I have the chance and time to read other peoples, but believe me it feels so good once it’s back together and your driving it again.
As of right now, nothing. I don’t think there is anything one CAN do to fixed a scored cylinder in our platform…I believe JHM is working on a way to resleeve the cylinder, perhaps one of the JHM guys can comment on that?
I did provide numbers to each cylinder when we tested it prior to the work, its toward the bottom on page 4.
I think as long as you keep up on oil changes and give the car proper time to warm up you’ll be fine. You might consume some oil, but it won’t be devastating.
…that’s what Jimmy was saying as well. I really wasn’t devastated about the slight scoring; at 95K, I was sorta expecting slight scoring to happen to at least two of the cylinders.
For sh*ts and giggles, I compiled a list of ALL the parts I’ve purchased for the Avant over the past three years and totaled up the costs of all parts. I broke things down into three groups; mod parts (MOD), preventative maintenance or replacement parts (PM) and other. “Other” parts were considered aesthetic parts or wear/tear parts such as brake pads and tires.
lol i realize that. I was more or less asking if the heads will make any additional HP/TQ. He is the first person i know of that has actually done the heads so i was curious if he would know more about them. (im sure some of you know the answer as well).
You bought piggie pipes, and milltek downpipes…what’d you do with your stock downpipes? Did you sell them? net that out somehow.
You should also put an approximate depreciated market value of the stuff you have in case you sold it.
i.e. piggies $200
millteks $200
FI Catback $750
etc
That will knock that ‘mod’ number down quite a bit.
When I was looking at the next $5,000 in shit I had to do to my S4 to get it where I wanted it (suspension, brakes, clutch/fw, other maintenance), I ended up deciding that instead selling it and paying the $18,000 delta for an RS4 with half the miles was a better spend. I did a depreciation analysis over the next 5 years, and the RS4 was a good bet. The delta really was only $13,000 for the RS4 (all that stuff would be sound and in working order on the RS4…it’s lower, it’s clutch was like new, and the brakes are already a Brembo BBK). Now I had to look at depreciating a high mileage S4 over the next 5 years vs. a low milesage RS4. Even if the RS4 depreciated like a normal car, it wouldn’t have been much different to keeping the S4 when you net out residual values. And the S4 would have needed a timing job at some point…if not a new engine. But the RS4 has not depreciated like a regular car the last 3 years or so. It has held on pretty strong.
Anyway, point is spending is one thing. Don’t forget the asset values.
I’m not gonna lie Saki, after reading your post, my initial reaction was “wtf did I just read?!?!? damnit, should’ve paid attention in that finance class!”
I wasn’t planning on selling the Avant anytime soon considering how much money I put into it then factor in the market depreciation…I came to the conclusion that it’s just better to keep and enjoy.
