Stumped....

Haha, I do recall you having several good hands. I had some crap cards!

Yes you did get robbed on multiple occasions. Great hanging with you guys. Sucks I never had a decent time to go for a ride. Plus those cops were just too aggressive to chance it. I look forward to hanging out in the future.

Slow hope you find that tick…and HOW DARE YOU!!!

I got officially got the Avant back last night and while I’m happy that its running strong with new timing AND cylinder head components, I’m not very thrilled about the noise its STILL making. Haha, it sounds like a diesel with a tick problem…

Anyways, thank you again to Jimmy for putting in the hours to get my Avant up and running. It was truly an awesome experience helping him with the cylinder head rebuild/install, timing component rebuild/install and clutch/pp/lwfw install; a VERY educational opportunity to witness, firsthand, the internal workings of our “infamous” BHF engine.

Me too…it’s wearing on my nerves already. It’s like watching a cute woman nudge an empty plastic cup towards me, smiling at her hot friend who was drunkenly amused and then getting put on blast by her mentally psychotic bodyguard friend. Seriously though, I am going to swap out my old manifold with the used one I bought from a member, I have a hunch something in the manifold might be loose.

As for the diesel truck-like noise, I’m not certain but I think that might be clutch or drivetrain related. I don’t know the schematics that well, but I’m thinking maybe there’s something loose between flywheel and clutch itself. The noise accelerated with engine speed and dies with engine speed but doesn’t necessarily go away.

I’ve ruled out bad valves because…well just because! Haha, that’s my scientific explanation.

*** video moved two posts down ***

Performed the following today:

VAGCOM diagnostics in reference to cam adjustment, ignition timing and timing retardation

Swapped out my old intake manifold for my spare (old is going to JHM sometime)

Reseated downpipes

Results:

VagCom read very well, no misfires…did three strong third gear pulls (Jimmy could provide more info)

Intake swap did absolutely nothing to make the tick go away

Reseating of downpipes yielded better seated downpipes, it was a little off when we re-installed it last week but this too did nothing to fix the ticking.

Up next:

Removing the mechanical adjusters to make sure they were assembled correctly

As of now, the car sounds like an F350 diesel which is some improvement from earlier but it’s still annoying. I am taking the Avant to Audi of Silver Spring tomorrow to get a third opinion from another tech that works with a friend.

I tried clicking the link it didn’t open last time. I’ll check later when I have better speakers to see if I can hear anything specific

Awesome…let us know what you find out.

I also have video of what it’s SUPPOSE to sound like. The video is of the car on its initial start-up, we had fed water into the system to check for any possible leaks as Jimmy had JUST put everything back together.

Initial start-up:

Video of current noise:

Also, to lighten up the mood considering the current frustration, I made a chain warrior medal from the cam adjuster center and my old dog tag chains:

Personally I think it belongs to Jimmy since he did most of the work

That chain is awesome.

But man that noise is odd

Here come the questions

Any codes
Any misfires
Does the AC work
Dose the power steering work
have you driven the car

Try to
Pop the oil cap off and see if it gets louder
Unplug the maf turn the intake tube up leave it exposed and start the car see if that makes it any louder

Thanks Justin, answers to your questions in bold within the quote.

Here’s another video of the Avant:

In this video, the downpipes were reseated properly to eliminate any exhaust leaks coming from the exhaust; we also swapped out the intake manifold, hoping the tick would go away…that didn’t help.

I took her into Audi of Silver Spring and the shop foreman stated the same thing Jimmy; my objective was to get a third party opinion. We will be tackling the cam adjusters again come Monday so I will update with any new updates.

For the time being, I’ve had the following said to me about the Avant…I found all funny:

“Bro, is that a diesel? I didn’t know Audi had Diesel engines.” - coworker

“Haha, your Avant sounds cammed out…” - Audi of SS service advisor

“Your car sounds like a truck!” - wifey

Update:

I think Jimmy found the culprit of my odd rattle. I will post a little more insight once things are put back together and quality-checked.

Hopefully you guys could figure this out. Let us know how it’ll work out.

In a situation like this it’s good to have someone like Jimmy on your side.

Kickass! i hope you guys find it! I may be using Jimmies services for the headers soon

Did Jimmy ever take a look at the rear timing guide size?

We should have a good update for you guys in a little bit. Just need to finish it up to make sure.

Shhhhhh.

I haven’t got around to it yet, plus my car is a early 2004 so my guide is different.

Size or side?

Can anyone OTHER than Jake or Jimmy, spot the problem?

I wanted to wait till Sunday, when the car is finalized and topped off to post what the problem was but Jimmy is pretty confident the issue has been fixed.

Looks like something is wrong with the hydraulic piston; no pressure.

So slow what was the issue?
