Thoughts on the JHM R Series Pressure plate and 5R clutch disc

So I got the JHM R series pressure plate and 5R clutch disc installed. Thought I’d post my initial impressions on it.

The pressure plate itself looks built quite well. One of the differences from the OEM pressure plate is the removal of the SAC mechanism. It also has a lot more clamping force.

The 5R clutch disc is a 6 puck design with a ceramic based material. It has some pretty beefy springs (4 of them). It’s pretty aggressive, but I plan to supercharge in the future so I opted for this over the new street performance disc JHM is developing.

I’m still going through the breakin period (just over 1/8th of the way through the recommended amount) so take my thoughts with a grain of salt. I’ll update this thread once I have completed the breakin period and can do some actual hard driving.

My first impression was that is different. And that’s not a bad thing at all. I really like how it feels now.

The clutch pedal is heavier with the new pressure plate (as expected) with the engagement point slightly higher than stock. It took a bit of getting used to for the first 50 miles or so but it feels normal now.

The 6 puck disc is aggressive, but still very daily drivable. I was tooling around town quite a bit yesterday, and also drove it in very heavy stop and go traffic heading into work today. Didn’t have any problems. I don’t normally daily drive this car, but I figured I would for a while so it doesn’t take forever to break in the clutch.

I’d think if you were coming from the stock clutch you may find it a bit aggressive, but it shouldn’t be that much of a step up from the stage 4 disc since you probably weren’t (shouldn’t be) slipping that anyways.

Again, I’m only 1/8th of the way through the breakin so all this could change of course.

My final thoughts for now is that it’s definitely a step up from the stage 4 kit for me at least. The 5R disc is more aggressive and may not be for every application, but my car is now ready for whatever supercharger kit I decide to throw at it.

any chatter going on with this setup?

i didn’t look yet, but is it up on the JHM site for sale?

I also had the track density transmission mount put in when this was done so I attributed the increased noise in the cabin to that. I’ll take a listen outside the car after work to see if there’s anything more.

As I understand it, it should be for sale soon.

Good to hear! Keep us posted

Wow. You went track tranny mount? I’m going street. Sure, it’s only a 10% increase over stock but I was under the impression the track mounts added some vibrations.

I have the track mount myself no vibrations here… felt great after the install

Subscribed for more info! I’ll probably be ordering one of these once they become available!

Yeah I did go track mount. I somewhat regret it. On one hand there’s basically no slop. There isn’t any increased vibration either that I noticed. However there is a looot more drivetrain noise that comes through (as you noticed Axel when you tried it today)

I should like to check it out soon.
