After some googling I came across the ct1511 universal 2 leg puller kit. It appears to be a Chinese replica of what the kukko tool is. for some strange reason, no one, absolutely no one carries it in the us. Its available to purchase through a few European websites and a couple Chinese sites, I came across a set on eBay and threw in an offer. At this point I feel safer going through eBay and having PayPal protection than getting scammed by some random Chinese company.
Hopefully it works out, I’ll post a link on where to buy all the tools once it’s done but it cost $160 vs $1100 for the kukko kit. Pretty crazy price difference. I should hear back if it worked out by Tuesday or Wednesday and it won’t arrive for a couple of weeks so this tranny rebuild might have to be paused.
lol the cost of shipping alone would probably make it worthwhile to just take it to your local transmission rebuilder. But If all goes well I could definitely fix yours if it blew up too. I’ll have some more updates middle of this week.
It appears to be a chinese replica of the kukko tool, For a heavy duty transmission rebuilder, the kukko kit is a valuable investment, but for my 2-3 times use, I’m sure this tool will last just fine. It comes with three sets of arms and you can use it as a dual or triple arm puller.
Nice! This is one of those projects I’ll get to eventually. I only have intermittent issues with the 3-4 synchro, and that’s only when the trans is bone cold. Maybe I’ll rent your tools in a year or so
My puller tool came in, $160 shipped from Hong Kong, works perfect!
Although I will say those sweatshop kids are really slacking, if you look close there are washers and nuts just flying loose, they didn’t even finish assembling all the pieces. They were nice enough to at least put all the parts in so I could assemble them.
The input shaft in the bell housing has a ball bearing that needs to come out, I tried with a few tools but it looks like I’m going to need to go specialty on this one. I’m looking into a few different options right now.
Oh also I found the issue with this tranny, third gear synchro was indeed beat. It was still in one piece, but the teeth were very mashed, and the composite coating over the outside of the ring had a ton of chips in it, pretty bad wear.
The gear looked flawless though, looks like the synchro took all the wear. When I blew that synchro, I kept driving maybe 1 or 2 weeks but I completely avoided 3rd gear, just revved out second and then dropped in fourth, so this synchro was babied after the damage. I’m going to replace it and compare the damaged one against the one in my transmission currently. I have been abusing the crap out of this transmission and I am expecting the synchronizer as well as the actual gear to be replaced on the transmission I am currently driving on. So we will we be able to see how much abuse these synchros really take and what they look like. That project won’t happen for a few months though, At that rate this is moving, between finding one tool and waiting 2 weeks to work on it again, it might not be til 2015 But it will get done.
Well I’m not tranny expert…yet…but it seems to be having trouble getting into gear with a flick of the wrist.
Ever since I installed the JHM solid linkage, putting the car in gear is pretty much just like barely pushing the gear in. I just push it the tiniest bit and it locks in, I pull it a bit out and it drops right into the next gear, its crazy how it feels.
Anyway, third gear has been “popping out”, not while its in gear, but I’ll push it in and its like it gets rejected and throws the shifter back. It does this under heavy load when I don’t use enough force with the shifter. Like I mentioned I can be pretty gentle with it since it falls right into all the gears, but third sometimes just throws it right out. Synchronizer won’t do its job past 5k, I’ve gotten some times when it doesn’t work around 4k too…This tranny definitely has much more abuse and it definitely shows.
Theres the tiniest amount of noise in 3rd while decelerating, not sure if thats just the LWFW tho. Synchro is definitely toast, but I’m pretty sure the gear has taken some damage.
There is a better chance that the synchro is bad then damage to a gear. The trans would go in gear eaiser if the gear was damaged or ground down. Could be the shaft is bent or the collor is damaged. Those are hardend gears they can take lots of abuse. So far this looks great. The synchro is ment to take abuse and damage before breaking anything else.
I’ll get some comparison pics of 4th and 3rd gear syncrhos, third is all mashed up, and it was barely any abuse. I wonder if audi makes upgraded synchros…
