16730 - Camshaft Position Sensor (G163) 16725 - Camshaft Position Sensor (G40)

So I just completed the valve cover gasket reseal and timing belt refresh on my 04 2.7tt, upon starting I received the following codes:

Address 01: Engine Labels: 078-907-551-AZA.lbl
Part No: 4Z7 907 551 S
Component: 2.7L V6/5VT G 0020
Coding: 07755
Shop #: WSC 02334
VCID: 53A54C35A1E7C8B983D-5140 WA1YD64B24N055171 AUZ7Z0C2479920

2 Faults Found:

16730 - Camshaft Position Sensor (G163)
P0346 - 35-10 - Implausible Signal - Intermittent
16725 - Camshaft Position Sensor (G40)
P0341 - 35-00 - Implausible Signal Readiness: 0110 1101

So I removed the right bank sensor checked the cups alignment and thoroughly cleaned then reinstalled. I cleared the codes and restarted and got the same error. The car is slow to start and cranks for a while, but starts and idles fine. Could the cams be off a degree or two and it still idle fine?

Any ideas? Am I correct in thinking the only method for adjusting the timing is manually aligning the marks on the cams and crank? This is how I reset the cams and cam sprockets, then rotated the engine by the crank two full revolutions and checked the marks and all was fine. ???

Did you check the connector harness? Could be dirty/corrosion etc…

I checked the connector at the sensor itself, I do not see another connector between the plug and the ecu. Is there another connection?

Where the harness plugs into the sensor, if those prongs are dirty it can cause incorrect readings.

Also check to see if you got any gasket material on the sensor or pick up itself. Best way to further investigate thus is to unplug the sensor itself and see if the code changes.

Yes, the code changed to

17800 - Camshaft Position Sensor Bank 2 (G163)

P1392 - 35-00 - Open Short to Plus

17746 - Camshaft Position Sensor (G40)

P1338 - 35-00 - Open or Short to Plus

17755 - Camshaft Position Sensor 2 (G163) / Engine Speed Sensor (G28)

P1347 - 35-00 - Incor. Correl. Readiness: 0110 1101

Well that’s good and bad. It sounds like the sensor is reading out of range and that something is wrong with the sensor or its installed wrong or with some sort of obstruction

Well I removed them both, cleaned them thoroughly and reinstalled them. Starting improved a ton, however now I get one code

16725 - Camshaft Position Sensor (G40)
Implausible Signal - Intermittent

Thats the only code I am getting and the engine runs and idles smooth.

This is the Bank 2 sensor correct?

Today I checked the timing measuring blocks, and this is what they look like.

thats telling you that the sensor might just be going bad. The sensor is reading right part of the time and you can tell that due to the intermittent part of the fault code.

Im not sure what side thats on. there is a DTC look up table in the tech section here you can see what that says. That might help you see what side its on
