2004 S4 misfires, flashing CEL, Rough Idle

I started up the S4 yesterday and it was idling like crap. The CEL started flashing, so I quickly hooked up the VC and pulled the following codes:

16684 - Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
P0300 - 001 -
16692 - Cylinder 8
P0308 - 001 - Misfire Detected
16690 - Cylinder 6
P0306 - 001 - Misfire Detected
17755 - Camshaft Position Sensor 2 (G163) / Engine Speed Sensor (G28)
P1347 - 002 - Incor. Correl.

I was told to try swapping the 5 and 6, 7 and 8 coils to troubleshoot. Still go the random misfires, CPS 2, and cylinder 6 misfire. Number 8 misfire went away.

I do get the chain rattle at startup, but always goes away within a couple seconds. Just over 100k miles.

I also pulled blocks 91, 92 and 93 (more help from another owner). I was wondering if the Bank 2 reading in 93 should be blank or not?

Sounds like you need a timing service right away. Don’t drive the car any more.

When I did the timing service on Slow4’s S4 the driver’s side/bank 2 camshafts were retarded from normal because of the broken guide on the bottom driver’s side. The guide that always breaks. JHM now includes a metal guide to totally solve that issue and prevent it from happening again.

Kick3pts you came to the right site. This is the most technical site with the best experts. Most the time the advice you get on other websites is just people relaying what they read here.

JimmyBones is a audi tech and anything he says goes. So without adding too much more you have a bank two code and bank two misfires. If your getting chain rattle you already have broken parts and should consider doing the chain service. But now you have two bad codes that tend to be the result of the partial or in depth failure of the timing system. If you keep going you run the risk of having just a big paper weight

+karma to Jimmy and Justin for always helping AR members. You guys are awesome.

And to you for being one of the best forum mods there are.

And kicks sorry for not answering this. Before. No 93 shouldn’t be blank when it is that’s generally telling you there is no reading and that in itself is a bad sign

I had a feeling it was the timing issue. I did not drive the car as I read the flashing CEL was very bad (best Pedro Cerano voice). Here’s another try at uploading the values. Was hoping no value meant simply installing a new Cam Position Sensor would do the trick, but hey a guys gotta hope right! Thanks for the info.

The blank reading and the -16 are a very bad sign. It leans hard in the timing service needing direction
