From my research, it (6hp tip) is a big improvement over our weaker 5hp. But, I have never owned one. Sure Justin and others will provide better first hand insight.
Had the old 5 speed in my A6 hated it. had the JHM TCU it was a little better but still not great. the 6speed tip a night and day difference. The car drives much better shifts much better has a much more powerful curve due to the transmission gear raitos and if you get the right year JHM can put the TCU tune on it and that really helps make it sporty.
The 6speed transmission in the tip form is a big step up and its a proven transmission not just in our Audis but in many other cars as well. Its a very good transmission. If you cant go manual and the 6speed tip conversion is on option its a great option.
IMO, it is best to physically check base timing with the cam bars and the crank pin. That can be done with the engine in the car. If you still have the factory crank pulley then you can line up the marks on the crank pulley and the block instead of using the crank pin.
I would say looking at the chain physcally is the best bet. But jimmy this is a chain motor not a belt motor. Do you still think he can check it with the motor in the car.
Justin, I was saying to check base timing with the special tools. That is all done from the front of the engine with the valve covers off and the front end moved into service position. To open up the timing area with the engine in the car is a bunch more work! The transmission has to come off and the engine has to be disassembled in a lot of ways. I wouldn’t want to open that can of worms unless I had to and by checking the base timing on the front of the engine then I would know if later on that I had to open up the back of the engine.
With the valve covers off and the lock bar on the timing is off. Looks as though it is going to have to come out. What besides the JHM intermediate kit, motor mounts, trans mounts, and piggies should be done?
That sucks. Depends on what you have replaced already. A few things that come to mind are the fluids (engine oil/filter, coolant, power steering, refrigerant, transmission), oxygen sensors, serpentine belt parts, intake manifold gaskets/spacers, other difficult to reach things if they have been acting up as of late (alternator, starter, AC compressor, and power steering pump), power steering return line from the rack and pinion to the metal cooler line up front, and probably some other stuff that I forgot.
Yeah those broken guides would do it. Are you sure that it is bank 1/passenger’s side that is off or bank 2/driver’s side? It has always been the bank 2/driver’s side that was off for me.
I see a lot of sealant on the intake cams. The exhaust camshafts don’t look that bad. Do you have any more pictures?
The good news is you cought it before it got beyond repair. The JHM kit is nice as its got the solid guide so you dont really have to worry about doing this again.
Those cams look nasty. Can you scrape that off. I cant see the cams really being rusty they are in oil most of the time.
Well that will deffinitly cause some issues. I think I might have a exhaust cam but I dont know if the allroad exhaust and intake cams are different. I actually might have two sets of intake and exhaust cams.
When you say it broke in two pieces. How did this happen. like it fell on the ground or you were pulling it out and they just fall apart
The locking tool plate that inserts into the end of the cams was inserted. When tightening down the adjusters the cam tried to rotate and snapped the end off the camshaft. I found one at a local yard , i might have it magnafluxed to make sure it solid.
Are the cams different between the allroad and the S4?
I thought they were different basied off the power rateings between the two cars. I would think the S4 cams would offer more power then the Allroad. If you got a new cam for cheap great. Just make sure to check the other cams at the same time. A cracked cam isnt a typical thing so seeing how the other cams look might be smart. Do you have any pictrures of the cracked cam
