2006 S4. Scored cylinder walls *pics*

My S4 engine was recently replaced under warranty (thank god) for severe oil consumption.

Here is what was the problem

All 6 pics are found in the album. here are the first 3

is that…bad? Looks barely discernable, the scoring that is.

I expected it to be dramatic.

Wouldn’t it be funny if you just had a bad PCV valve and they gave you a new shortblock as a result thinking it was scored cylinders? lulz.

^^ that would be funny!

Either way im happy  lol

Yeah that does not look bad at all. But Woot for a new block!

Do those PCV go out often like a defect or they tend to just wear?

PCV’s tend to gum up, and then your valve covers begin leaking. Definitely open it up and see.

so what all did it take for the dealer to crack and get you a new block. Is this your original warranty or aftermarket. Great news on the new block.

Was it crate motor new or referbished

new short block…Audi CPO warranty.

^^^ that.

I had been complaining to the dealership for over a year about severe oil consumption. When they FINALLY descided to look at my problem more seriously they looked over the engine bay to see if they could spot any leaks, topped up my oil and asked me to drive 1000 km.

When i came back 1000 km later i wasnt even on the dipstick anymore.

They took my motor apart sent pics in and 2 weeks later i had a brand new short block. (from what i uderstand these engines cant be refurbed?)

Its been over 2 months and my oil lever is spot on when i pull the dipstick now.

Big credit goes to the service tech on this. He made his report, sent pics in to germany to start the warranty replacement case. No one ever came in to verify his findings, they had a few back and forth emails on check this, check that, measure this ect… So this could have gone either way for me. My tech knew what to say to satisfy the head shed in germany to green light a replacement. Im not saying he lied or exaggerated to get a replacement, but somethimes its not the fact you report, but how you word your findings.

bora, make sure you keep fresh oil in there every 3k miles to preserve that nice new shortblock. 5k oil changes are not cutting it anymore guys!

Is this type of problem recurrent for these motors, rather, once the new engine is installed, is it likely to happen again?

hopefully not. One of the theories on the ‘cause’ is a poor design in the piston skirt causing it…improper warm up = different metals expanding/warming at different rates and high rpms/engine speeds = piston to cylinder wall contact.

Since the replacement includes new pistons and rods, hopefully it won’t be a recurring event…however if the driver continues to be impatient with properly letting his/her car warm up, it might.

Well said. I agree very much

the workorder / bill

total was just shy of 13k

here is the link since the image wont be readable.

MAN! Got to love a warranty. I wonder if you can use his time with your new motor out to put headers on…hmmm. I’m guessing Audi wouldn’t be a fan of that.

im thinking it would depend on the relationship you have with your service guy. Mine would not mind at all.

I have JHM intake spacers so an extra set of gaskets… They were replaced under warranty ;D

that’s not because of a good relationship. That’s because ignorance (in Audi techs) is bliss.
