2007 C6 S6 Oil Leak - Front of Engine

Hey guys…

Hoping someone can help out.

Looking for a picture of the front of the engine. The bentley manual I have doesn’t have a good diagram of it and I would actually rather see an actual picture of the front of the engine.

Here’s the details on the leak:

It’s intermittant, and only when the engine is at operating temperature. Does not leak while car is parked, does not leak (or appears not to leak) while the car is running. It basically spits out oil from somewhere when the engine is cranking. This car has 120,000Km on it (75,000miles)

Checked the oil pans, but oil is coming from higher up then the lower oil pan… about mid way up the engine block.

I am leaning towards crankshaft seal or oil pressure switch. I have some more troubleshooting to do, but if anyone has had an oil leak like this I’d like to hear what your story was with it.

Once I do repair this (I’m certain I’ll have to put it into service position, and replace the belts, coolant and whatever else is accessible with that off) I’ll document the repair in case someone else gets this problem.

Thanks.

THANKS! You are da man.

No problem.

Let us know what you find.

It’s a bit tricky.

My intuition points towards the crank seal… but oil appears higher then that.

Hopefully someone else has some other thoughts on this.

I have a hard time now thinking it’s the oil pressure sensor, but I will just have to take the front end apart to know forsure.

I’m also contemplating if it would be the valley seal, but don’t know what the bare block looks like. Oh well, it’ll be a bit of a research project.

I have got some good pics of the motor with the manifold off - I will post them tonight for you!

Higher than the crank seal - that is strange because all of the oil lines & connections are towards the back - unless you have totally filled up the valley with oil  Lift the back of the car and see if more pours out?

Thanks Paulf. I appreciate that. I will give that a shot.

Thinking I will pull the front off this weekend and sort it out. But post that pic up

Any chance you can sneak us a pic of what your looking at or see. The big one is usually the valve cover gaskets leak. They tend to leak heavy in the lower section where the oil pools and drains down. Anything you can show pics wise would help.

Sorry mate, forgot to post them up. Let me try to remember again tonight!

All I can think of is the same as Justincredible has said. There’s not much else that can leak from that point.

I had a similar issue in the fall.
Turned out on mine it was the seal at the base of the Oil filter pedestal where it meets the top of the motor. It pissed oil out only under load and filled the valley. The valley has drains running to the front of the motor making it look like thats where the leak was.

If you have the intake manifold off check those seals.

cheers

Great info SGT.

It is really great to see the v10 S6 community growing so quickly here, and people sharing their problems, and fixes, with everyone.

The more ‘known issues’, root cause, and resolutions that are shared, the stronger the whole community becomes, and the whole ‘mystery’ of maintaining the v10 S6 is uncovered.

PS: The front end shouldn’t have to come off if the filter is the issue…
Just the intake manifold… :frowning:

The seals are dealer only parts that may take them a few days to get ahold of.

Awesome… Well, I was planning a carbon clean sometime so maybe I do that and check there.

That makes alot of sense.

The fact it doesn’t leak other then when running and even then its intermittent, and the height of the oil leak and it being from the center of the engine.

I’ll be taking some things apart this weekend to investigate, I’ll take pics as I go along.

Thanks for everyone’s opinion, really helps.

Hi mate (sorry again about the pics!)

If you are taking off the intake manifold, my thread here should help: http://audirevolution.net/forum/index.php?topic=3221.0

Happen to have those part numbers handy??

Sorry I don’t. I had it done a local shop due to the weather at that time of the year.

Here you go, mate

SGTMonty…

Do you happen to know if it was item #14 in the ETKA diagram above? Or #25? Or both?

I am thinking I might just have mine done as a preventative measure while the manifold is off.

#14 was the source of the leak.
