2007 S6 Blown Engine

I thought you guys might like to see what my broken engine looked like.
It blow at 74k miles.
Full main dealer service history and I’d never seriously thrashed or maxed it out.

I’d had lots of problems with it, throttle bodies changed, ECU, wiring looms changed but all to no avail, it would intermittently misfire until one day the emissions light came on for the one and only time, i was in no position to stop when it came on so I drove on at 50mph tried to boot it and then the engine just gave way!!

Well a long story but it ended up with Audi Uk, my local main dealer and the Audi Warranty people replacing the engine.

Now with 25k miles on the clock its running like a train!!!

And here’s the new engine

Curious what that bill would run without the warranty.

They showed it to me with the engine, two new cats not forgetting the new magnesium inlet manifold the bill came to £24k!!!

So what was the actual failure? Did a piston crack?

That’d be my guess. Cracked ringlands for a while which was causing misfires/low compression, and then total failure.

They ( Audi) don’t know or if they do they weren’t letting on. They never found the piston but the gudgeon pin and con rod were all intact. The misfire was sporadic and intermittent over a period of about 6 months. They sent the block back to Audi in Germany so I dont think we’ll ever know.

So was the work good willed? Or did you have some type of third party or factory warranty? Glad to hear it’s been running top notch now.

I’ve actually only heard of one other complete engine failure and it as at a very low mileage like less than 25k, he never really got a straight answer either. Was actually a buddies dad who had one brand new back in 2008-2009. Of course audi put in a new motor. He then drive it well passed 100k miles with no issues. I still thi n k these motors are pretty stout especially compared to say the e60 m5 v10 which folks now have to do bearings as part of normal maint…

I bought the car from an Audi main dealer with an Audi Warranty but the warranty only covers to the value of car which was £15k thereafter Audi UK and the Audi dealer (not the one I bought it from) picked up the rest of the tab. I can only assume that its a mixture of goodwill and a training exercise for the dealer as they’ve never changed an engine over on a V10 before or since ( this was in Sept 2013).

So I consider myself to be very fortunate in how I was treated by my dealer and Audi UK.

But I’m not so sure about the reliability of the S6 engine, subsequent to the engine being replaced in 2013 it’s been out twice more for other ancillaries that have failed. As it happened I worked in a small office with another S6 owner in the two years we worked together our engines had been out of the car six times. I was fortunate and all my work was under warranty whereas he was not so fortunate :frowning:

How. What were the reasons for the entire motor coming out 6 tines? Bigger more common things I csn think if are intake manifold replacement, carbon clean, injectors, pcv, possibly cat replacement, and o2 sensors. Was it out for any of those?

His needed a carbon clean, then some coolant pipe at the back of the engine cracked, I cant recall the third time.
As for mine I believe it was a oil breather pipe shortly after they put in back in the first time which I believe the warranty company disputed that you needed to take the engine out but the dealer just did it anyway and I don’t remember the third occasion I just get bored to talking to the dealer. As nice as they are, I’m on first name terms with all of them, I just roll up eyes and drop the car in to the and wonder about what car will they give me to drive this time?

I think this one was the nicest

Oh and this is what mine looked like at the very spot in decided to die!!

Congrats my engine and Transmission failed at 76k as well. Had them both replaced by Fideltiy warranty…total bill was 38k all but 2k covered by warranty! I know the feeling!

I’m guessing that was dollars not pounds?
Did you ever find out what caused the failure?

yes $ not pounds…

Part of the Intake Flap/intake went through the engine and scraped the cylinders in the engine. Never found out what was wrong with the Tranny though… just wouldn’t shift properly from 2nd to 1st and went in limp mode almost every time I’d drive.

WOW this is crazy to see. Im starting to wonder just how many motors Audi had to replace. I think on this site alone we have seen almost 10 guys with motor issues. Audi seems to be really standing up and helping out with keeping lots of these v10 motors on hand.

Thanks for posting this

I think maybe when the have an engine failure like this its in there interests to find out what went wrong, surely it would be a good training excercise for their techs to tear down and check internals etc after some real world use

Yeah I am curious what the failure rate actually is and at what mileage. I still view them as rock solid compared to the recent NA MB 6.3 motors, e90 v8 and e60 v10, but hey it is a v10 putting out an exorbitant amount of heat. Constant carbon, the broken IM /flapper motors, and cats so prone to overheating and breaking I cannot say I’m suprised either…maybe environment, gas, etc. May have something to do with this as well.

I think that’s why there’s a £6k surcharge on the engine so it can go back to the factory for them to investigate the failure otherwise I really wanted it for a coffee table like the one on Top Gear.

Perhaps someone could make a sticky where you could put your engine failure and details?

guys a motor thread would be a great idea. It might be scary for some to read but it sounds like very good idea. I did something like that on another website a long time ago. Its good to keep track of the issues and try to ducument them
