Well I wish the experience with this car was better than how it turned out. Unfortunately the engine died on me last week. Most likely the cam chain snapped or tripped causing interference (Valve to Piston) on one complete side of the engine. no compression, car barely runs.
There are not a lot of replacement V10’s out there and i’m not equipped to dig into it further. Shame as I have put a lot into the car since I got it!
Suggestions on what to do with this car now? Located in Vancouver Canada.
There is a 07 s6 that has been wrecked in nz the wrecker states he wants around 5k nzd for the engine - it’s got around 100k/65m on it. May sound crazy but nzd is pretty low compared to can and usd so maybe an option.
That’s disturbing news… I wonder if regular cam chain replacements should be added to the list of regular maintenance items. Seems like a pretty big deal, if an aging one can break without warning and destroy your whole engine
This kind of thing always is hard to hear. Obviously dont try to start the car to investigate more as that will obviously make it worse.
Being on that side of canada you can maybe look at sending the car to a good shop. Your on the west coast so you can look at maybe shipping the car to JHM. They are really big into chain work as they have developed an entire new upgrade line of parts for the chain system on the 4.2. You might get lucky and it could be a broken cam
Either way a super qualified shop with experience if a good thing to think about as a good experienced shop will be able to fix the motor in most cases rather than just replacement of the motor.
when you look at the money side of things it looks bad if you try to sell the car with a blown motor. I would look at all the options from fixing the car to dropping in a new motor. With the holiday season right around the corner usually part prices tend to drop so keep an eye out for that trend you might be able to find a good deal
Thanks for the all the advice. I’m looking into the repair option including what JHM could do for me. I have a few of their performance parts in there already!
I can’t think of anything that could have alerted me to this specific problem. I had mostly the same issues as everyone else here with the V10.
I carbon cleaned it and added the spacers for the intake. Still ended up with misfires at idle but the flaps in the intake were hatched and stuck open so I thought I would ride it out until I could get the intake replaced. Overall I put a few grand into it then poof just died!
This car is not something I want to get rid of but its a ton of $$ to diagnose and more to repair. I guess it will be my “project car” for the next little while
If your going to tackle this yourself on the repair side you will obviously save a ton of money. If not then a shop that really knows that they are doing is going to be the next step in saving you a ton of money. It would be interesting to hear what JHM has to say and they are just south of you given there strong workings with the 5.2 and all that they have found so far. Its a good possible option even if you have to ship the car there.
It might not be as bad as you think but again only tearing into it will tell what really happened and what it will take to fix. Sorry to hear. Keep us posted.
