2014 991 GT3

The good:
-9000 rpms, 475 hp. Holy crap they are up to first-gen GTR numbers WITHOUT the turbos.
-Looks incredible.
-12.9:1 Forged pistons, and titanium rods a la NSX/LS7

The bad:
-New GT3 is only coming with a PDK…? At least it’s a CR version.
-No more Mezger motor…this is based off the 991 motor

The ugly:
-electric power assist…
-new GT3 is incorporating 4ws? come on. I just don’t get it.

Ultimately I worry this will keep the 997 GT3 values high, which means I may have to settle on a 997.1 this year, instead of hoping 997.2 prices will drop.

Discuss…

NA motor = fail

Not turbos or SC = impossible to be good or mod

Maybe I’m a Philistine but in my brief experience (test drives), I’d buy a Boxster S over a 911. The Boxster is like a go-kart and way more fun IMO.

Weren’t all GT3’s in NA form? Also 4ws? I remember the premise for the GT3 was weight reduction and handling. I take it the added rear steering had superior results over weight savings?

Yes and yes… and yes

I’d sell as mint and get one

Heyooooooo

Lol

That will never get old Joe. Pure gold.

The GT3 was always the purists car…the ultimate track-day car without all the crap that they load up on the other models.

People made a stink when they put PASM on the GT3…now they are limited to PDK…

This 991 GT3 not having a Mezger engine is a big deal. The standard Carrera motors have always been “throwaways”, whereas the Mezger, based on the original air-cooled block, have been 100% rebuildable to factory tolerances. The last streetable Mezger i guess will be the RS4.0, then. Apparently the 991 cup car will still get the Mezger.

Considering even the Japanese have dropped 4ws, Porsche will have a tough sell with this one, too. Why on earth would they debut it on the GT3?

^^ I didn’t know the 4.0 was an enlarged version of the Mezger engine! Is that the same case with the 3.8l in the 997.2 TT?

^^^^ Mais oui!

Every gt3 up until this one. And it would have the Mezger crankcase, gearbox, etc, different from the Carreras.

So what separates this GT3 now from a Carrera? 4ws?

Okay… as the gt3 moved from the 3.8l to the 4.0l they kept the Mezger engine design just increased displacement. Unlike the Carrer TT that moved from the 3.6l to the 3.8l (the tt3.8l and the gt3 3.8l aren’t the same engine) and strayed from the Mezger design and utilized cheaper components.

Is that correct?

More or less (and I’m not an expert in this field) it is the offspring of the air-cooled motor, fitted with water jackets on the cylinders. Separate sleeves, crankcase, etc are all still there. When they moved to the 996 Carrera, they basically made a “throwaway” motor which has coated cylinder walls (IIRC) and can’t be rebuilt to Porsche’s specs. They only kept the Mezger motor for the GT2, GT3, etc. Now they changed that even.

Here’s a nice pictorial of a teardown and upgraded rebuild on a 997 GT3RS, taking a Mezger motor to 3.9L, 8800 rpm, and 458 whp ON PUMP by swapping bigger sleeves and pistons, and using a hotter cam.

I am not feeling the electric steering, 4ws or the PDK, but I am sure Porsche will do it’s best to keep it interesting.
