2014 RS5 Multiple Codes After Downshift

I’m back again with another installment of codes, this time due to a downshift. A few weeks ago I had the car randomly shutting off but after replacing the fuel pump all was well. This time I was on the interstate behind some slower traffic. They moved over and while in normal drive mode I activated the kick down and was met with an immediate violent jolt and the EPC light plus the transmission gear symbol and no forward power. I immediately pulled over, kept the engine running and put it in park, and pulled these codes:

The car was in limp mode but i logged these codes and then cleared them. I re-scanned and was left with the module 13 codes. I shut the car off, started it, and drove off. Within 10 seconds, the TPMS light shut off and i had non further issues except for cruise control not working and no codes. I stopped for gas in about 30 minutes and when i drove off again i had cruise control. 200 miles later i made it home with no more problems in any gear. I think something happened with shift fork 3 and the ECU really didnt like it. Also some of the codes were from a few weeks ago when i was dealing with the fuel pump. Ive got JHM stage 2 and the RMR trans cooler. My transmission has never had an issue before. I am aware of an Audizine thread that some of you guys authored roughly 2 years ago. What should my next step be? Drain the trans fluid and check/replace the filters? Check for shavings? Check solenoids? Run an adaptation? Wait and see? Also i couldnt figure out how to post the logged txt file that ive seen here before. It wont let me due to file type and i have a cheap HP laptop that only has VCDS on it that stays in the car.

Pickle, Steve, you guys did adaptations when you had Shift Fork 3/C issues. That seemed to fix them? It also seems tune related as Ape figured out (roughly 2 years ago). Just about every other thread I’ve seen has only older cars with mechatronic failure. I’ll check my transmission fluid level and pop off the magnetic drain plug for a second to see if there’s any obvious signs of damage. I’ll then run the adaptation process and check my drivetrain mounts as I think they’re on their way out.

Your software seems newer than mine.

If your hardware is 13’ until when it was sorted (think during 13’) then call Audi, they should fix it. Don’t remember what the bulletin was for, but regardless.

You’ve probably already seen this post:


Since you’re on the JHM software you may want to logon and see if you have the latest revision for the TCU? As you mentioned a fluid change couldn’t hurt, assuming the first time was done on schedule at 35k (really should be done earlier) and you’re around 50k now. Definitely couldn’t hurty doing an adaption, it takes a while to do so plan on going on a drive. Keep scanning for faults.

I did all fluids at 40k, 53k now. I’ll do the adaptation first as a few RS5 guys say that this problem is random and due to the stage 2 tune. It may not come back after this.

How do I know if my mechatronics is part of the TSB? I also don’t have codes dealing with the TSB anyways. https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2013/MC-10124668-9999.pdf

Interesting note-the transmission estimated 380 lb-ft of torque. Not sure how accurate that is.

I’ve got 3 TSB’s for the DL501 and like you said, none of them deal with the P284B code. I PM’d you over on Audizine for BAV auto as the cheapest Audi dealer to get OEM parts from if you decide to go with the Control sensor. What year is your car? '13’s had a earlier version Electronics board for the Mechatronic and prone to more, but not a lot of failures. I’ve got a Stage 2+ '13 S5 and have never had a problem at 68k miles. My '13 RS5 was purchased with high miles but it was in cosmetically excellent shape with a seized motor so I installed a low mileage (25k) '15 DL501 and a low mileage (long story) on it’s 3rd motor a 27k '13 engine. If it comes down to it I have the 27k DL501 out of the RS5 I bought for the motor.

  1. Thanks. I hope it’s not any problem but a hiccup from stage 2. I don’t want to start replacing parts and hoping it goes away (if it gets worse) because from the threads I’ve seen people have replaced the sensor, both boards, the solenoids, mechatronic unit itself, and even the transmission with sometimes no relief. I love this car but I will not be keeping it if this issue continues. The fuel pump giving out a few weeks ago was annoying but was a simple fix.

From the other DL501 cars that have this issue it’s not a stage 2 hickup or issue as it happens stock as well. Generally when you’re tuned your more likely to be a sporty driver so that might be why it’s shown and most people on the forums are tuned so that could play a roll as well.

Anytime I have seen the code on a regular occurrence is after a code clear / Flash performance file / or a battery replacement to where the DSG unit needed to go into an adaption and hasn’t ran through the adaption fully.

It for sure is worth checking fluid / filter and then adaption IF you see this come back again. If it just happened once and random. I don’t know that it’s a ton to worry about.

Haven’t had time to do anything else today. I have to clean the valves before I work on the battery replacement/adaptation but it’s possible all this was cause by an unhappy battery.

An old battery can cause your symptoms but it’s usually a transmission adaptation issue and you’ll get the shift fork 3 issue once and it’ll never come back. I wouldn’t worry about it unless it becomes a recurring issue. I’ve not seen it become a recurring issue for anyone though. It seems to happen fairly infrequently. If you service the transmission, make sure to run adaptation after so it can adjust all the friction points.

Updating this thread as I have a client who has the shift fork 3 error but also has 01315 which is a no comms to the TCU issue. They occur at the same time in the VCDS log. Battery is two years old. Having him run adaptation but I think there’s likely a correlation between no communications and the shift fork error.
