3.0 Radiator

Posted this on AZ, hoping to get confirmation before tomorrow. My radiator is shot, locally I’m getting quoted around $700 to have it replaced w/ new coolant of course. My thought was that I could order it myself and save a chunk of change, but nothing online specifies if the radiators I’m looking at will actually fit my car (3.0 TIP). Can someone point me to the right one, or at least a part number? Thanks!

If not I’ll just cough up the money and get a shop to do it.

Being that JHM is going through the R&D with these cars they should be able help you out. I know its not listed on there site but they can get any OEM parts you need, and the price is right  Replacing it yourself is not that bad if you have some knowledge of working on cars, tools, and the space. If you were in the area i’d give you a hand.

Just dont get a cheap one from a local autozone, kragen, napa, etc… For a car like an audi, its worth the extra buck or two to get a quality radiator since its kinda important for a car haha.

A few things to ask first.

One. what is wrong with your Radiator now. I know you said it leaks but from where? Maybe take it to a repair shop.
Two The radiator isn’t hard to change on the Auto cars its harder due to the transmission cooler lines. Other then that I think you should be able to do it yourself.

I can’t get my parts program to wake up so I don’t have the part number handy right now. Getting a radiator for your car shouldn’t be too hard. Just remember there is a Automatic radiator and a manual radiator. You can’t use the manual Radiator but they can use the automatic one.

Lol I appreciate the thought Rod. I’m hoping some of the local audi guys might lend a hand, would make the bumper removal easier. I always find there are so many good guys who can help out but they are never near me!

Its beyond repair, the plastic housing is really brittle and cracked. it must have been on its way out and maybe slowly leaking? it is dumping out coolant pretty quickly, like it’s been getting worse every day. I had a shop check to see if they could patch it up and they said it wasn’t worth it. The manual and auto thing is how I figured it would work lol, auto always gets the short end of the stick with more expensive parts.

I can get it shipped to my door for $240can, which seems pretty good (autopartsway.ca) I’ll probably order it tomorrow unless anyone else has a better idea.

price is not too bad. No pics though? hate it when they do that haha. Just make sure its a reputable company, do a little background check/searching/reviews, etc… I always do just so I dont screw myself.

Let us know how everything goes, ill be at JHM tomorrow and ill ask about the radiators. ill keep you posted

Yea definitely frustrating when they leave it out eh :stuck_out_tongue: Most of the local audi guys order from there, free shipping on orders over $75 and its within Canada so I don’t have to worry about customs. I think I’ll order it and then should be shipped to me by the time I get back from San Fran.

Looks like I’ll also be ordering a new coolant tank cap. It popped apart into 2 pieces when I tried to fill up the coolant this morning!

Ah, I forgot you were in Canada. sounds like a good deal then and being that they have been dealt with before i’d say go for it.

if you haven’t already it would be a good time to do the theremostat, water pump, old hoses, etc… as well since the front end is coming off

Good call, I have the original thermostat (black not green) so its likely to go soon too, I’ll grab some new hoses as well. Preventative maintenance is the best maintenance!

In case anyone wants to replace their radiator… Heads up, way different than doing it on a 1.8T!!! I’m still waiting for mine to arrive so I took my day off to do a dry run of pulling it out (also wanted to see if I could JB weld the leaks).

Ended up throwing in the towel as I ran out of daylight. Theres an oil cooler attached to it, which has to be disconnected, and I couldn’‘t get the bottom line out (torx screw that was pretty much inaccessible) and theres another radiator tube, which I think goes to the transmission. Big pain in the butt! And I couldnt find the bleeder screw on it either, not in the same spot as the 1.8t’s.’

Going to try to get a more mechanically inclined person to give me a hand when my new rad comes in on Wednesday.

Sounds like fun

Wow, that was an ordeal and a half. Never done that much work on a car in my life! As soon as I had everything hooked up and was filling up the coolant it finally felt like it was worth saving the $300+ i would have paid a shop to do it. Took me A LONG TIME. Everything that could go wrong did go wrong. If anyone wants a DIY in the future I will definitely do one, there were things I ran into that aren’t documented at all online.

Bog props to you. between the wires hoses clamps its 1/2 a nightmare. once you have been in there and the mystory is gone its quite rewording

Thanks man, definitely a learning experience. I feel a lot more comfortable when I open the hood now :stuck_out_tongue: Just got a shop to top off my ATF for me today. Picking it up after work, then I’ll finally get to enjoy the jhm tune on ethanol free 94 octane ;D

Glad to hear shes back on the road!

Hows it runnin? I’ve been loving the tune so I bet you were dyin :stuck_out_tongue:

Running pretty good, theres a noticeable difference between 91 and 94 octane, which is awesome ;D Just gotta sort out my misfire on cylinder5 and i’ll be golden.
