3.2 Tech discussion thread

Well with it being quite on the B6 boards as we wait for parts from JHM, it is time to start talking about the V6 again. Those V8 guys have been pretty talkative lately (not complaining ;D)

So lets gather as much tech info as we can here

The 3.2 is an FSI motor isnt it. Do you guys have carbon build up problems.

How similar is it to the 3.2’s in the newer cars like A5 and 6’s

Now there are two 3.2 threads going on i wonder if there is a way to combine them into one. To answer your question, yes the 3.2 is an FSI motor and the engine definitely suffers from severe carbon build up. I believe that the 3.2 in the newer vehicles is the same exact motor. But i think that it revs a little higher because my b7 3.2 can only hit 6500rpm and i’ve seen s5 3.2’s hit 7000.

3.2 mod interest.

Okay guys i was doing a pit of research and compare between the 2.7tt, 3.0, 3.2, and 4.2 motors and i believe that the 3.2fsi motor would be most comparable to the 4.2fsi…minus the added 2 cylinders of course. But is still comparable to the 3.0 because the biggest difference is the increase of piston bore (82.5mm on the 3.0)(84.5 for the 3.2) this is of course why the engine became a 3.2 and has higher compression. All of the motors are considered to be “undersquare engines.” This means that the bore (diameter) of the piston is small than the stroke (length the piston travels in the block). Supposedly these types of motors are meant to be powerful at low rpm and are not to be high revving. How ever there are a few exceptions where undersqaure motors are good at making highspeed(rpm) power…these motors being some of them. I will post my findings for everyone to browse…

The major thing that would hurt the 3.2 motor if considering forced induction would be its super high compression ratio. This motor seems to be designed to make a lot of power n/a and to be high revving. It shares the same bore/stroke as the 4.2, however it does not benefit from having 5 valves per cylinder much like the 4.2 and 3.0. I think that the 3.0 would be a good platform to start forced induction because its compression ratio is only 1 away from that of the 2.7tt, which can handle about 500hp on a stock motor. I think because of the high compression of the 3.2,having some bolt ons, such as downpipes, would allow for some high power increases at higher rpm…much more than what the 3.0 would gain. Not to forget meth injection, which is known to add some good power on boosted vehicles as well as add good gains to high compression to N/A motors.

mtosofsky have you ever done a carbon clean and noticed a performace gain like the RS4 guys. Maybe the Carbonator that JHM is coming out with for the RS4 could be adapted as well

I have not considered doing a carbon clean up of my engine yet. Based on my findings, unless im actually taking off my heads and putting in some serious elbow grease, chemical cleaners dont help all that much. Of course i could be wrong so maybe its something to consider in the future.

I have always been told to drive it like you stole it for a little while and that should take care of the carbon build up.

that works well with motors that have fuel moving over thevalves, but with the FSI motors there is no fuel touching the valves/intake ports. The only way to remove it seems to be scrubbing/aggressive chemical soaks, then keeping it away by incorparating a system to introduce fuel to the back of the valves periodically.
