So I had the chance to take an R8 for the day yesterday. It was a 2014 4.2 automatic. I have had my RS4 for a year now as a daily and I have wondered about the v8 R8 for some time. The car was pretty awesome, handled well, power was nice with the auto trans. Compared to the RS4 it really didnt seem that much faster. The only thing about the car that would get old to me quick was people constantly taking pictutes at every traffic light, and kids saying nice car man or smoke the tires. So ill get to the real question, how do they stack up against each other? 1/4 mile stock vs stock etc? Is it really a better car? Looks factor id take one over my RS4 in a second, just curious about statistical figures for conversation sake.
That’s funny another person had the same reaction that I did. I drove a V8 R8 auto for about an hour test drive. Seemed like every stop light cars were stopping next to me to take pics. The car was ok but for some reason I just didn’t like it as much as the RS4. I think it may be due to the fact that the car is so good that in order to really get that visceral feeling you just can’t push it hard enough on public roads. It has a similar feel to a Porsche but maybe just not exact as a Porsche. The RS4 is a little rough around the edges and flies under the radar. I prefer that. Not sure if that helps answer your question but you are not the only RS4 owner that has had that perception. I would pass on the R8 and call JHM for a fraction of the cost to get better performance.
From a quick search of a few sites and after looking at time slips that were posted on dragtimes.com. It looks like the stock 4.2 V8 R-Tronic R8 runs a 12.6 to 12.61 et @ 113-115 mph. So it is only a little bit faster than a stock RS4 because Saki ran a 12.75 et at like 110 mph if I remember correctly.
I always thought that the V8 R8 was slow for what it was. The V10 is such a better car all the way around and once Audi put the dual clutch S-tronic transmissions in them then it was by far one of my favorite cars to drive. I have a friend with a gen 1 V10 S-tronic R8 that I have done some work for and the best part is always the test drive afterwards.
It is kind of annoying to always have people pull up next to you and say stupid stuff while in a R8/Lambo/Ferrari but the windows do roll up and usually the AC works.
the R8 is definitely a bit better on power to weight ratio with a fwe hundred pound advantage
it also has worse space, worse comfort as far as entry/exit, worse trunk (non existent) and all around is entirely un-practical for a car with the same engine as the Rs4.
With that being said, they’re WAY more special and if you’re under 5’10" it would be a more fun experience. If you don’t like attention it may be a bad choice.
If an R8 4.2 is DSG, and it’s the 450 hp tuned version, it should crush an Rs4. You should be looking at 12.3-12.4 @ 112 or so, like a new S6/7. The dealer near me called me and asked if I wanted one a couple years ago. Great deal on a 4.2 manual, and the seller wanted an RS4. I thought that was interesting. He went RS4 to R8 and tried to go back to RS4. I didn’t do it obviously, and he ended up getting an RS5. I think the R8 thing was just too much for him (too small, WAY too much attention).
They’re fucking beautiful still to this day. They’re 8 years old and they still look like they’re from the future. If I wasn’t 6’5" I’d definitely have done the swap.
There are like 4 in my area, so they definitely draw attention. It was fun to drive I will give it that. Im only 5’9" - so I fit in it quite well. I think if i had to pick one it would be hard to give up my RS4. There are way more R8s in the states than there are RS4s… nit sure on exact figures but im pretty sure the RS4 is more rare.
There is a complete breakdown by color and options. Im sure someone here can dig it up. 1953 total according to that sheet. 99 in misano red (i throw that out all the time when people talk to me about my car) now 98 after the twin turbo car earned its wings. Glut orange and papaya are the lowest. I think like 1 and 3 made each color.
