A4 3.0 bent valve? pics inside.

Firstly, so nice to see a forum with a lot of 3.0 info!!! I posted this same thread on VWVortex with not much help.

So I recently bought a 2003 B6 A4 3.0 Quattro project car. Its black on black with sport package. While I was refreshing the timing belt with the Blauparts timing belt kit I tried setting it in proper time but noticed that the crank wouldn’t turn more than a quarter turn. I found that there is one stuck lifter that the piston is hitting which is not allowing it to turn fully back to the TDC mark on the crank pulley.

My question is, is this lifter not springing back up towards the cam shaft because it it bent? (pics below) The lifter does go down when I spin the cam shaft, just not up.

Also my DD '97 328i

I will say that being as the car sat for a few months before I bought it I’ve soaked the lifter in some oil and it does have more movement than before but crank is still not moving.

What I’m doing now it taking out the cam shafts so the valves and lifters can be investigated a little more. I’ll be happy if I don’t have to pull the head!!! (Did a full top end replacement on the E36 last winter).

If you started the csr out of time then this could be a interfernce issie where the valve is jammed open. The lifters need pumping up as well… did you ever have the car running before doing this…

No, never heard it run. Bought it without the timing belt on it so things were out of time from the get go. PO said that it ran rough but blew no smoke and threw no codes. Also someone had jacked up the car on the gas lines so they were flattened in multiple spots…which is why I though it was running rough with no smoke or codes.

ok, today I got some news! I started taking the upper cylinder head off gradually and found that the crank was able to move fully back to TDC!!! The sticking lifter still hasn’t moved so I’m gonna continue pulling the cam covers off and see whats going on the there. Fingers crossed.

So today I was able to remove the cams and pull out the lifters. Exhaust lifters which I though could be stuck came out without any problems and you can see from the position of the valve and spring that the issue lay further inside the engine.

Does anybody know what size Torx bit is needed for the head bolts?..my Haynes manual is coming in the mail in the meantime.

The head bolts require their own special socket. I think it is this one. http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item.asp?P65=&tool=all&item_ID=645138&group_ID=682240&store=snapon-store&dir=catalog

Ah yes, thank you. Just put in order with Mac tools.

It sucks audi has a special tool for thr heads… not sure the movement of the motor with removeiing parts of the head is good. To me it says the valves hit the poston and were holding the motor up
