Addressed airbag sensor issue, now steering column won’t adjust in/out

Had an airbag code: G283, front driver sensor.
Disconnected battery, swapped sensors, inspected wiring. Found sensor wiring was strained from when collision shop replaced headlight. I will cut back insulation and splice at a future date.

However, the up/down still works on column switch but in/out no longer works. What’s the explanation? The auto up/down for the windows wasn’t working for a bit, but started operating. Is the module going through an adaptation? I don’t get it or it’s a hell of a coincidence.

I’ve got G283/4 codes which I also believe are wiring issues. Do you have any diagrams to show where the sensors are located?

Sensors are very easy to get to. Both are located right next to headlight on core support. Just remove the air inlet on each side by removing the two T25 torx screws and they are right there. Torque for bolts is 9 Nm for when you reinstall.

Alright, can someone shed some light on this procedure:

VCDS steering column adjustment-- post #4

The last time I was clearing the ABS code, the VCDS got hung up. Perhaps this module got jacked up and lost the setting?

I’m not familiar with VCDS to have confidence to do this. Can someone give me a little guidance?

OK, I got some balls. Did the basic setting thing, and it worked fine. I just need to get more comfortable using VCDS…

Wait. My steering no longer adjusts up/down. I had always assumed it was a mechanical failure and ignored the problem. How can I tell if there is a software fix for this?

Try the basic setting thing I posted. It worked for me and can’t hurt.

What’s the trick to releasing the connector? I pushed and pulled the tab while gently twisting a flat blade to separate the two, but it wouldn’t budge…

They are spring loaded. Push the tab back in towards the sensor to release the connector housing.
