Looking back on it, what Skypilot did with the hole in his hood was extra dumb because under the hood is a high pressure zone. Over 100 MPH air enters the front grill and has to escape out of the engine bay. Poking a hole in the hood just means air exits from that point. So all that does is force hot air that’s traveled past the heat exchangers out of the hole which his open element air filter would suck in.
I’m letting the rear wheel wells vent into the rear bumper area. I’ve modified the rear valence accordingly to prevent it from trapping air. I need to put a 2.5" hole saw with a diamond edge on the lower painted area of the rear bumper to vent it.
Interesting stuff west. Great posts I like the idea of the venting in the rear. Putting the porsche picture puts it into perspective and helps show the approch.
As for the hood thing and sky. I think eveyone tried to help him. I totally agree with you tho. It was more of a vent then an intake. I dont think it was helpful to him at all. Getting some of the hot air out of the engine bay espically with the supercharger will really help when tracking the car.
The idea is just to get more air to pass through the main heat exchangers. High pressure in the engine bay slows the air flow rate. Venting out the hood right after the radiator solves that problem. If I was to cut a hole in the OEM hood and cap it with a “scoop”, I’d do it over the charger because that’s a big flat area.
Because you don’t want this to happen (sorry, I know it’s off topic, but they had a link on the same page and there is nothing better than Nurburgring crashes).
I think I’m going to do the vented hood. I have to roll the dice with Alibaba and hope it fits well enough or I’m out $1500, because you can’t exactly return something to China. I still haven’t installed the mod bargains lip on the front. The shop around the block from me wanted to remove the whole bumper. I have to go over to my guy in Berkeley who knows what he’s doing.
I’ve been noodling a lot on the rear diffuser but haven’t arrived at any conclusions yet. It might be possible to do something like buy a secondhand R8 diffuser and slice the edges off so it would fit between the exhaust. In the process the installer would have free reign to carve into the spare tire well to mount it. I’d say this is a pretty low priority. I’d have to be really bored to go through with it. So, next year?
Sounds awesome! loved your thread on the race seat with the roll cage! Will the end game be dedicated track car or more of a road going/weekend warrior car?
Its exciting to see people on here looking to push the platform in all ways! I am evaluating rear splitters now. As for your bumper air evacuation a few of my friends who have built dedicated track cars have done drilled holes in the rear bumper to allow air to escape. On the same topic I saw this on AZ thought of your thread:
We have a Boxster for road trips. In 2-3 years I imagine I’ll buy another car but I’m not in a rush to. There’s a lot of nice models coming out. Can’t wait to try the C63S coupe and whatever Audi RS comes up with. I’m not impressed with the GT4 because it’s not winning any best car competitions. The M4 GTS is priced at $130k which is a joke. If I had to buy something tomorrow I’d find a midwest dealer with a GT350R allocation. If was going to spend $110k (I’m not) I’d get a 991.2 S with rear steering, the one with the 3.0L turbo motor.
