aftermarket seats for motorsports

No classes, no racing, no SCCA license. Just a dedicated street legal track car with some safety bits. Maybe by the time the 981 Boxster is old I’ll be into that. For me, the gateway is getting whatever car I’m driving to the point where it can do the fastest lap its capable of. So if a magazine can pull a 1:43 out of a stock S4 at Laguna, and I’m still doing 1:46 I have work to do personally.

Holdddddd on. Are those real numbers?
Stock S4 1:43 @ Laguna? Was this by Pobst?

I think it was Motor Trend in the 335i at 1:43.

Pobst did the stock RS5 in 1:42.9. I use that as my benchmark for what my tweaked S4 should be capable of.

I’m ecstatic to see someone finally do this on this platform, thanks for leading the way on mods yet again! I will likely be here in a few years time.

BTW, any consideration of a bolt-in cage such that you could remove it and add the rear seats back in more easily? I imagine welding is stronger and safer but I also imagine bolt-in can be fairly robust when engineered well.

Back seat is ready.

I was wondering what that would look like, nice! Are you planning to do any paneling once the cage is in or will you leave it as is?

There’s a few options. The simplest would be to slip the bottom bench under the bars. It should fit without modification. The floor attachment for the cage is basically a box welded into the footwell where it meets the bottom door jamb and the rear bench wall. The bar attaches again in the trunk.

Another option is to weld off the child latch loops and have an automotive upholsterer carpet the back seat area, into the trunk and spare tire well. That would certainly cut down on noise and strange rattles you don’t hear when the car has an interior.

Some simple alcantara covered paneling could look quite nice and would minimize added weight, here’s an e90 m3 with that setup:

Thats sexy looking

cant wait to see them installed. Saw your stock seats on CL

Heh. A very passive listing. If some A4 guy really wants some nice red nappa leather seats, he can have them. Otherwise I’m glad to store them indefinitely.

West, can you outline what parts are needed to mount the Recaro’s?

I’m a bit unclear on that myself and can’t get a straight answer. It should be Recaro steel side mounts in black, and a seat slider mechanism from recaro. Then there’s 6 point belts. Might need some kind of seat belt extender for the 3 point until I get the bar put in.

VAC makes custom floor mount adapters if you need them:

I see a lot of folks using these, I think they help center the seat with the steering wheel. New ground for me too though so YMMV.

Keep us posted!

You can’t powdercoat steel, only aluminum alloys.

Uh what? Yes you can

are you stupid? of course you can, any metal than can carry an electric charge / current.
