Cage is sick, congrats again West for taking this platform into new territory (track car wise). I also appreciate that the rear tint is enough to mask the cage for street driving, nice.
Perhaps you don’t have this sorted yet but please share what parts you need to mount the seats, connect the harnesses, and keep the OEM seat belts, once you are there anyway. I plan to take a similar path in a few years time and I need cliff notes!
Thanks for the tip on the A4 passenger seat @infinkc. I bid $220 and won. Now I have to drive out to Sacramento and get it so we can cut it up and extract the occupancy sensor.
Nice looking cage West! I’m curious, have you considered picking up a matching seat for the passenger. I realize where and how this car will be used though it’s missing some symmetry. You have spent good money on some quality parts yet it looks like a yard sale inside.
That is so cool.
Ride height is spot on too (imo).
West, can you confirm hub to fender measurement?
I’d like to get my car to the height in your pictures
I got a donor seat for $220 on eBay from a 2013 A4. Thanks @infinkc for picking that up for me. We carved it up, pulled out the gel cushion, the wiring harness and the seat belt. It was plug and play for the most part. We swapped the seat controller module from the original seat, so that we didn’t need to pair the donor controller in VAGCOM. 2.3 ohm resistors killed the seat airbag lights. Everything is tucked neatly under the carpet. When I get a passenger seat it will have a functioning passenger side airbag that operates with 3 point seat belt.
Regarding how the seat is mounted, there’s a few parts involved. The first is a floor adapter, which is a standard part available for the B8. Essentially an OEM seat is wider than the Recaro seat, so there is a flat metal brace with a very low profile that bolts into the original 4 positions. Then it allows the new Recaro rails to attach about 1.5" narrower on either side. It’s key that this doesn’t raise the seat height much, perhaps 1/4 inch.
Then there’s a Recaro slider that mounts to the floor adapter. This allows the seat to slide forward and backwards. At the front most position, it’s perfect for my legs to operate the clutch and brakes.
Lastly there’s the Recaro steel bottom rails. There are 4 bolt positions front and rear for configuring the seat height and seat tilt. Whatever they picked, we got it right the first time. I should note this seat is not as tall as the OEM seat. My seating position is great and I can see perfectly. It’s not too different than the lowest OEM setting, perhaps 1/4 inch lower.
I think I can fit the rear bench back into the car, but I’ll have to clip some of the wire frame inside of it. The cross bar comes down and meets the bottom right. The seat won’t quite fit with that underwire. If I hack saw out that one support, the leather should wrap around the pole with no problem.
Then I just need to find an upholsterer to figure out a back plate where the rear seatbacks used to be. I’m assuming that could be lexan plastic with carpet glued over it, but I have no idea what would be appropriate. I just want to be able to put a few things in the trunk without them being seen in the cabin or flying forward.
wow thats a great amount of work. It looks great and its cool that your going to keep the car as OE looking as you can with adding in the seats where you can
