another C6S6 exhaust post - pics & vid

Per the sound advice gleaned here (pun intended, and thanks vtgt!), I got my exhaust done on my new to me '07 S6 yesterday - friggin liberating it 'twas ridding myself of that insipid OE strangulation system… 2.25" per bank on a 5.2L is beyond dumb. Ditched the 2nd pair of resonators, added a crossover, and replaced all pipes to the OE boxes with 3".

WTF!? How is it possible that mfg’s put cars on the road like this???:

my local bender is simply awesome… great guys to work with, talented, wanting to please, and accommodating. They did an outstanding job here, and CHEAP! Those bends down around the rear suspension are intricate and took a lot of work to get right - not like Audi who says yeah you know what’s good let’s FLATTEN IT DOWN TO NOTHING there.

The beefay diameter causes it to hang slightly lower (my bender shim’d that nominal cross brace that’s midway down the system there). Coming from my last car on coilovers and 17’s, I’m not at all concerned with any clearance issues in this application:

in fact, I’m really diggin the view that basically everyone will always have of this heh heh… little peek up the skirt, so to say:

Making space for those final 3" terminating bends @ the boxes caused the boxes to shift rearward… just enough to now make the OE tips poke suggestively from their nacels. Perfect!

Sound-wise… thus far I’ve taken 1 vid of the initial startup / idle / rev, but need to get it uploaded etc. so that will be in the morning. But… after having my bud do a couple WOT blow-by’s in it for me earlier today, all I’ll say is dayum… sounds gooooooooood. Picked up a bit more sound, but it’s very (very) rounded, flat-plane sounding, tuned, exotic, mechanical, wondrous. And oddly enough, there’s this supercharger-esque “belt whine” of sorts you can prominently hear now… sounds tits!

Most importantly, power / flow - the gains are tangible. The car is now nasty / almost violent. Perrrrrrrrrfect! With nearzero in-cabin discernable effect (cough What’s Her Face will have noooooo idea cough). Winning!

You can hear the sound gained upon startup, and then static rev’ing is especially positively affected - whereas the stocker would barely gasp a pair or 3 of reluctant “rev-ups” with successive boots of the throttle… now? Oh man, kick away at that bastid, and the tach just sings and the pipes rip 'n roar. Gnarly.

I think my fave thus far is the bear-down upon decel… whoa that’s addictive. First gear parking lot trolls are bemusing. Tho, the WOT honkin WAIL is pretty spectabulous as well. Fekkyeah, I’m diggin this thing.

Pop’d in my K&N’s that arrived today, all told I’ve tended to a glut of sins of these with those, the APR tune, and the pipes.

Now… about that mpg… fakk! Still seeing 10’s and 9’s. That ain’t easy to do! WTF? I don’t drive like that big a toolbag. Crykie. Good thing gas prices have plummeted… I had my biturbo12 during the $4.49/gal craze here yearses ago. No thanks. Now I’ve got 2 cars that struggle to hit 12’s… suuuuuper lol / d’oh.

again, thanks vtgt for the instigation to go big or go home on the diameter… sage wisdom and appreciated!

Gotta look later. Not displaying on my phone. Sounds like a perfect setup :). Driving moderately spirited was like 12-16 mpg mostly city and causing country roads. Highway only I would get actually 22-24 mpg poking along. I thought mpg was great coming from an e60 m5 and shiny 18.5 tank…4-6 mpg around town  range sucked!!!

none of the pictures came out.

On the MPG something to think about is that. If the car gets too hot the ECU will give the car more fuel to try and cool it down.

thanks for the tip on the fuel / heat - I may have a chat w/ APR about this… even just cruising / coasting in D it’s not helping as much as I’d think it should

pics… odd, I see them here - but other forums have said same recently, f’n Google+. Here’s links, sorry (holyshart these are a f’n disaster not sure why… but they work… argh!):

I’m not exactly sure what’s happening with your images other than that Google+ is keeping them private instead of public. We, being an outside source, can’t view the pictures as we should be able to. Have you considered using dropbox (more private), imgur or gyazo? Imgur is more public, but not so much as to be a huge issue and Gyazo is a downloadable program that can take snapshots whenever.

Works! Now just waiting on that exhaust vid!

Man I forgot how crappy the stock exhaust is. Nice dents from the factory to make it fit. I scratch my head and wonder why they didn’t at least attempt smoother bends and at least 2.5 piping like the rs4.

Let’s get the video up qith drivebys

Looks good. Out of curiosity, the X-pipe looks like a pre-made unit, who was the manufacturer?

Also, did you go 3 inches from the first set of resonators back, only to plumb them into the stock mufflers?

I believe that’s what he did based on reading his other thread. I know some people don’t like that approach but I personally do. I enjoy the sleeper factor and appears more oem+

Completely different cars but I remember when I was modding subarus most people spent a ton on exhausts and mufflers and most people found out that the stock mufflers actually flowed decent and while yes they might be giving up 3-5 whp by not replacony them, the percent increase in gains across the Rev range was largely attributed by the larger diameter piping, smooth bends, etc. Decent mufflers and tips can get pricey so I’d say bang for the buck doing this setup is second to none as well. When done right you get a lot of the gains and still very controllable sound without sounding obnoxious. Not all factory mufflers and tips are created equal but I think the c6 s6 setup is decent. Would have to gut one up to really know

Then again if you have a cash to burn and want a perfect flow, and dont mind.more noise and could careless about looking factoryish then upgraded mufflers and tips are ideal.

yes, 3" from first set of OE resonators bak to the OE cans - I scored that 3" x from fleabay, no name unit, $49 shipped… there were $28 options as well but none that would get here in time for the appt I’d scheduled before even buying the car heh heh

now, vtgt sum’d it up perfectly

for me, I really like the look of the OE tips and hate when cars have these four ginormous grapefruit shooters back there… these look poised and purposeful, and protrudes now just enough to look the business

sound-wise, I’m certain Milltek etc. sounds “better”… don’t care… I wanted increased performance first, and then only “a bit more sound” and that’s what was given here

everyone that’s heard it has exclaimed “whoa!” :sunglasses:

very pleased w/ the results, I esp dig how mean and nasty it looks from the rear where you can see those huge pipes bend around… looks menacing

Wasn’t trying to knock the mod by any means, but what’s the diameter of the piping going into the stock mufflers?

If you want increased performance first, this seems contradictory to what you’d want. Sure changing out the stock piping with smoother bends and eliminated the tapered portions of the stock piping will help with performance. But going from 3" pipe back to a 2.25" inlet to the muffler (if that’s what they are) could be negating any of the gain, or at the least, minimizing it. Seems like simply eliminating the tapers and sharp bends and adding an x-pipe to the stock exhaust with OE sized piping would have netted the same performance results.

JRach your right. From a mathmatical point of view you want all of the restrictions in the exhaust at the front where the pressure is the highest. The restrictions further down streem cause more impact on over all performance. So there is a very good chance that the exhaust here is very much less then optiomal. There is probably a lot of potential power left on the table. But when you weigh the gains made from adding something like an X section it can still have a big impact over the stock system even if you neck it down at the end or in some spots.

While we didnt get a chance yet to hear the outcome of exhaust work the stg did this was a custom exhaust intended to play more of the exhaust tone but not too much more. So it sounds like he was happy to leave the extra bits of power on the table to try and down play the exhaust more. Or thats what I gathered. Excited to hear how it turned out. The Stock V10 mufflers hold up to extra flow better then the V8 mufflers did. On the S4 it sounds like ASS if you try to keep the stock mufflers in

^exactly - all this^

thanks for explaining it for me, I’d not gotten around to replying

I gained great sound / great power and at a great price & result…

I’ll get around to getting a proper vid up, will be a few or more daze

man, this place is a ghost town… ah well

so has anyone modified a milltek system to try and improve the flow? So its like 2.35" diameter, i wonder what an increase of 2.75" would do to improve power gains. I might get the local exhaust shop to look at it and see what can be done without butchering it up too much. Its pretty loud as is unresonated, i not sure how the larger piping work work from a noise level/drone point of view

I think i recommended something like that to you in another thread. Cost should not be too bad to do this.

Not sure of the diameter of the miltek connection to the mufflers But if you don’t care about hacking it up, I’d do new 2.75 possibly 3 inch all the way with an x pipe to the miltek mufflers assuming the mufflers flow pretty good.

with my setup, I get zero drone whatsoeverjust glorious rumble

if it were me and I were considering doing what you are suggesting, I’d go 3" not 2.75… that motor really needs to breath, and for 5.2L IMO 2.75" per bank is insufficient

again - sure, having a “choke-down” and having it be at the near-terminus of the system is not “ideal”… however… it sure is worlds better than what’s in there now and helps flow tremendously.

with a few miles now in the seat with my setup, I can 100% feel & hear that the car has very much been “optimized” in terms of being a generally happier motor / powerband / sound. It’s soooooooo goooooood!

The difference felt in the idle-rev test alone is profound - try booting the pedal a few kicks w/ the OE system and it struggles to rev a 2nd or 3rd time and begins to “flutter” - and I’d thought “that” was due to some new age new car type software or some such (seems alot of new cars generally impede static rev’ing these daze IMO)! Crykie, that’s terrible… my car now revs freely and happily and ANGRLY! 8)

I know I know I know I know… VIDS, STAT!!!

Buddy I dont want to clog stg thread but to answer your question. You should NEVER kit up and after market exhaust system to try and make it something you like. I first would try to sell the exhaust outright as it has a much bigger value to you in that fashion. I dont know where your located but it would make much better sense to try and sell the milltek then to cut it up. I personally would try to sell the miltek and take that money and have an exhaust built. If your close to the metro detroit area let me know the guys who made the 3 inch systems and headers for the V10 5.2 s8 and S6 are here. You would be much better off selling the current exhaust and taking that money to get somethng built or something better

Yep sorry for thread hi-jack. I updated my location info(Ireland) largest system i can get over here is 2.75", i would be doing well to sell the Milltek considering there might be at most two other ones in the country :frowning:

Talking with a local exhaust shop for options

I think I also recommended that too, with the option if you were open to gutting it. Not sure if miltek does this but many other exhaust companies sell just axel back or mufflers and tips. And many folks just do custom all the way back to something like that on other platforms with great success.

Folks also mix and match x pipes or other mid section exhausts with other companies mufflers and tips. That said since miltek is pricey so you can recover some Costs and do a full exhaust build for at least in the states 600-1000 for at nice system depending on where you go.
