Audi S6 C6 Oil Pressure Low

Hi,

I searched everywhere but haven’t yet found anything about this car.

When I bought this car, it did once “Oil Pressure” red warning light. We topped up 1L of oil and everything was okay for about 5 months. Now the car has just standed for more then 2 weeks and now the warning is yet again back. I’ve driven more than 3000KM and nothing has happened, why now?

The engine does not make any other noise, that should mean that the oil pump is ok? Is it a hard thing to replace or even to buy?

Where is the “Oil Pressure Sensor” located at this car? I thought that maybe I’ll start with that, it’s inexpensive and DIY if it’s located near the oil filter housing.

Looking for some replys,

Ats from Estonia.

This can happen without there actually being an oil pressure issue. I’m trying to remember where the oil pressure sensor is on the S6. Check on the back of the oil filter housing or in that general location anything located on that part.

The oil pressure switch goes bad on a lot of Audis. It is under the intake manifold on the front of the valley of the engine. You might be able to get to it without removing the intake manifold if you are crafty.

A few years ago, I had an intermittent issue with the red oil pressure warning coming on. I changed out the sensor and it resolved the problem. If you place the lock carrier in the service position, it is very easy to access and change.

The oil pressure sensor is located on the front of the engine.

There are a couple of pictures below showing its location:

Great posts guys. MEmber bumps for both of you. Great picture as well. That is going to be very helpful.

Woah, thank you guys!

Is the oil pump a thing that would be bad? I’d really hope that if I can change that sensor, everything will be O.K. I’ll try that carrier lock thing.

I was at first like “maybe the pump is bad etc”. Yesterday I drove about 40KM with that warning light and checked the oil level and any noises but absolutely nothing…Sometimes when I drove the light went away but came back again. Engine temperature was normal, no anomalies there.

I really hope that I do not have to make any big investments now…

If anyone has any other stuff to tell me what would help me, then I’m a big ear

THANK YOU!

Can anyone tell me what is the difference “Oil Pressure Switch” / “Oil Pressure Sensor” ?

Why won’t VCDS show any codes related to the Oil Pressure red warning light???

Many people (including myself occasionally) like to use the generic terms like “switch” and “sensor” interchangeably although there is a distinct difference between them.

There is no oil pressure “sensor” in our cars. It is an oil pressure “switch”. It is either “ON” or “OFF”. It has only a single wire connection that goes straight back to the instrument cluster. It is not unlike the switch for the low wiper fluid level (which also just goes to the cluster).

There is no direct input to the ECU. it is possible the cluster may pass the bit value of the switch status across the CAN bus but I do not see a measuring block for it.

I would just replace the switch. Check the connector while you are at it as well because an intermittent connection will also cause the cluster warning light to come on.

If you do a lot of the work on your car yourself, I would strongly recommend getting a Bentley manual. The online version is handy as you can access it on any device.

Hi,

Can anyone give me a part number etc?

Hi,

Thanks!

How common is that the oil pump is bad? I even can’t find one to buy…

I don’t think it is that common. The part number for the oil pump is 07L115103J.

Link to used on eBay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/2007-2008-2009-2010-2011-AUDI-S6-C6-5-2L-ENGINE-OIL-PUMP/153143260505?fits=Model%3AS6|Make%3AAudi&hash=item23a80cb559:g:hKUAAOSwrcxbdyUJ

Link to buying a new one: https://genuineaudiparts.com/parts/2008/Audi/S6/Base/index.cfm?action=partDetail&section=ENGINE&group=LUBRICATION&subgroup=OIL%20PUMP&component=OIL%20PUMP&partnumber=07L115103J&vehicleid=203858&siteid=214407

I would change out the pressure sensor first and go from there.

I’m ordering the new switch! Is it okay to drive to the garage? It’s about 2KM there.

When the light started, I did drove about 40KM. If the oil pump etc would had been bad, then in the 40KM my engine should be bad.

The car isn’t shaking, everything is feeling okay.

The pump isn’t a part you hear of often going bad. they can get plugged but that is something different.

The sensor is something that has been shown to go bad. While I can’t say for sure that you don’t have a pressure issue and if you don’t have to drive the car don’t. The chances of it being an issue at this point isn’t great. You should be good.

Looked the sensor, it seems that it hasn’t been changed. I haven’t taken the front off but I managed to see it with a lamp and the bolt is so rusty. If it would been 2-4 years old, then it shouldn’t be that rusty.

Now I’ve got a little more hope that the culprit is the sensor but really, the change is a pain in the *ss. Sensor is about 10€ but the change is time consumptio .

I changed my oil P switch when I did the last carbon clean. I think it was $20 or so and is cheap preventative maintenance.

It was pretty straight forward to do with ELSAWIN.

Went to the garage @ 10AM and left @4PM.

So this is old vs new

PS: I’ve got now a problem with my DRL. They are not working! The cables are plugged in, I tried removing the bottom grills and replug but nothing. What did I do wrong?

It’s a 2007 right? It may be time to replace if you’ve checked all the wiring and everything looks great. Is it both sides or one strip?

Hey,

It was working fine, even today.

Both are out. I don’t really understand what has happened.

maybe cold temps giving them issues…
