Audi S8 V10 Engine Swap

Hello Fantastic Audi Owners.

A few months back i posted an issue i had with my Audi S8 2007 v10 here is the link

http://audirevolution.net/forum/index.php?topic=4392.0

In summary the camshaft for bank one broke and it mest up the timming chain which gave me crazy ECU codes. and total loss of engine power.

Good news i bought a complete donor car from a car Auction (accident car to be used only for spare parts) the engine starts, my existing car is pretty solid apart from the engine issue, thus ones i install the engine from the donor car i have a full car to use for spares.

I know from experience some spare parts of Audi S8 and S6 can sometimes be very expensive.

Thus any parts you need kindly send me a personal message. i will give you the parts at a very low price.

The dash of the donor car is fully stitched leather it looks epic 8) my dash is just the normal special plastic how easy is it to swap the dashboards ?, is it a simple DIY how many hours does the job take roughly ?

Thanks

Nice pick up! Your in the right place!

thanks vtgt will post the pics of the donor car and my car very soon☺

I cant send PM’s for some reason. Maybe I am too new? I need the upper plastic from the back side of the drivers seat. Black in color. How much would you charge to ship it to 48334?

Thanks Dune-T

For the Upper plastic you mean the black plastic that you store stuff on (Like Books, Water ) when seated on the back seat right ? its connected to the driver chair correct ? and it has like a elastic band which expands and contracts right ?

Or do you mean the headrest only ?

I’d be interested in seeing some pics! I’ve got an 07 that could use a few things. What color interior/style trim? What style wheels/tires (if good).

Looking forward to seeing it.

Hello RallyVermont,

Just posted the pics to see the pics please view this this parts thread

Hi Sweet Potato,

I just had the same thing happen on my S6! The intake valves on Cylinder 1 touched.

What was it that caused yours to go do you think?

Cheers,

Sam

Oh Sorry about that, :frowning: :frowning: :frowning:

For me i believe it was because the camshaft it has a gear i think the gears were loose not tightened properly, i think the engine might have been opened before, by someone who sold me the car and wanted to make a quick money >:(

the initial symptoms were the car kept going off by itself while on standby, so i believe that when driving one of the gear teeth mist the chain and the camshaft got damaged.

(You need a special spanner to tighten it, its a male spanner i think it has 12 sides on it it fits the camshaft female screw for the gears)

You have come to the right place the AR members here will support you all the way
whats the condition of your cylinders are they still okay, does the car still start ?

Thats exactly the same thing that happened to mine!! it had fresh head gaskets in with a extra one for where the head had been skimmed! the valve in cylinder one had touched the cylinder and we decided it would be easier to replace as we didn’t know what other damage had been caused. Going to turn the old block into a coffee table

I found a used engine out of an S6 that had been written off. By the looks of the pictures a tree had fallen on it. A friend works at Audi and I got him to run the reg and it came back with full audi service history and it was just serviced 1,000 miles before the engine was removed.

Think it just needs a carbon clean as it sometimes has a slight misfire before its warmed up. going to go in and have the intake inspected on Monday

Thats great news, its a S6 engine i believe your car is S8, i think there is a slight difference in the camshafts, and the factory tune that runs on the s6 as compared to the s8, but other than that i think it should still work using your existing engine control modules :). the difference in power is so small you will barely notice it

Please update how it goes All the best Cheeeers.

Good News i swapped the engine my car is back on the road

It currently has following problems.

It starts with a lot of hesitation, especially on cold starts,

The car shakes alot and there is engine vibration

The gearbox is sometimes unstable its like there is a delay in pick up, and it raves higher before changing gears.
sometimes it feels risky to drive it in heavy traffic.

Overall the car feels heavy and slow (it feels like you have carried five people in the car and loaded the trunk to capacity with heavy equipment’s)

Things the garage has done, apart from donor engine install.

Swapped the spark plugs,
Swapped the ignition coils
Swapped the Low fuel pressure sensor
Swapped the battery
Swapped the injectors

The donor engine had very little carbon build up, so no carbon cleaning nesesary

Here are the main engine codes.

All Help is appreciated

Thanks.

Where to start you have a lot of issues and almost everything you explained can be directly related back to the codes your having.

Ill knock the codes out one at a time.

The loss of power and possible issues on cold start are going to be tied back to your intake manifold not working. The flaps are stuck open as the code says. Sounds like when they swapped injectors they forgot to plug back in the intake valve to control the flaps. So have them look at that.

A quick way to test the intake is to clear the codes and see if tat code comes right back without starting the car the same can be tested for anything.

the other rough start stuff can be the fact that your getting missfires on start up as well. I would pull the injectors out and get them tested cleaned and know what your working with otherwise your just going to be chaseing your tail injectors are the main sorce of issues with these cars.

Lastly and possibly the bad news. Your car is also going to feel down on power due to the fact your getting a S1 code for the 02. I dont know if you can reach that 02 sensor with the motor in or not.

Thanks Justincedible,

Sorry for the delay in replying

Yes indeed the garage must have mest up my intake manifold, because prior to them removing it i only had misfire codes now after removing i have alot of intake codes, i have cleared the codes drove the car the same codes reappear, i will remove the intake manifold this weekend and replace it with the flap free intake manifold from my old engine. regarding the o2 codes could it be because iam running catalist free, when the engine was out of the car I opened my cats removed all that was inside and closed it and connected the O2 sensors. might that be the reason i am having O2 codes ?

Also the car is drinking petrol like there is no tomorrow, driving style is normal, there is a strong smell of fuel in the cabin is there a way to detect if the injectors are faulty or broken by using rosstech vcds ?

Lastly ever since i got the car back from garage when inside the cabin apart from the belly dancing vibrations, and the strong smell of petrol, the car is so silent i barely here the engine. I know its detuned from the manufacturer, sound wise. But its so so silent before the engine change i could here the sweet V10 sound but now in order to hear it i have to literally drive it hard. will make a youtube video for you to see. what could be the issue?,

Thank you so much in advance.

From Sweet

The intake codes look like they are from things not plugged in not from a actuall broken intake. But you would have to check.

As for the 02 codes. No those codes are from bad or going bad 02 sensors. They are nothing related to the cats not being in there.

As for the intake replacement DON"T TAKE OUT THE FLAPS. If you don’t have the flaps in you will also get misfires if you have the flaps leave them in.

If you smell fuel and your car is eating a lot of fuel you probably have a fuel leak somewhere and I would tell you make sure you look for it as a fuel leak that isn’t fixed will end up in a car that gets burnt to the ground.

I second that fuel leak because I have had this problem multiple times in my car. For some reason the fuel line doesnt mate well with APR’s conical fuel pump fitting. A few days after the kit was installed 5 years ago it slipped off, car stalled, and i had fuel all over my engine bay. I went to home depot and purchased a few hose clamps which helped for a while. However do to its conical shape it doesnt seems to be a permanent solution because it gradually slips over time. Over tightening the hose clamps actually causes it to slip as well.

Really needs a larger more proper fitting for the fuel line.

Thanks bigserve134 and Justincredible,

As a update i removed my intake manifold and i found one of the fuel pipes on the drivers side was loose so i tightened it, i still have misfires on cylinder 4, 5, 9, 10 so i changed my intake manifold i installed a flap free intake manifold from my old motor and immediately there was a loss of power at low revs car is not picking up like before and the misfires are still there, so far i have swapped the spark plugs and coils within the same engine and the misfires are still happening on these 4 cylinders, i swapped the injectors from my old motor and put them in my new motor still the same misfires, i haven’t done injector cleaning. i just put full tank and added some injector cleaner fluid in the tank still the same issue. I now have two oxygen sensor that have failed. here are there locations. Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor B2 S1 and Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor B4 S2 please advice there exact locations can i change them myself or does the engine have to come out. I am currently running catless, can running a car without cats also cause engine misfire ? all help is highly appreciated here are the codes i am receiving.

Thank you in advance.

ok you have a gang load if issues.

Start with this first. unplug your lower tumble flaps somehow you have them blocked or possibly plugged in wrong anyway. From there make sure there isnt anything blocking the motor arms from moving. That would be the first place I would start.

now that you have your flap free intake on the car expect missfires to be more common but as you can see most of your missfires are at idle anyway.

also you are going to get missfires if you have a B2S1 bad 02 sensor. You need to get the sensor replaced and unplug those lower flaps check the arms and report back
