B6 S4 Power Steering question

Hey Guys,
My 04 S4 6mt (119k) just blew a power steering hose recently, I haven’t driven the car since this has happened. A little background to what happened is that I was (luckily) only about a mile away from my house. When I looked in my rear view to see a cloud of white smoke. (Kinda shit myself a little) I automatically go to turn off the main road and the steering was fairly heavy. Knowing it was power steering related, I pulled over and power the hood to see oil every where on the drivers side of the engine bay. I checked the power steering fluid and it was at about min level.

So I get back in the car and granny it back to my house, and parked it and shut it off. After letting it cool down I went out to remove the tray from underneath the engine. There was just a pool of PS fluid all over the ground, as was the tray covered also. The leak looks to be coming from the line right underneath the coolant expansion tank. From what I have read it is the most common line to go on these cars. I think its #11 in the diagram below

I am about to order lines 6,11, and 12, so here lies my first question. Has anyone had any issues in the past with line #10 before? For the extra $100 bucks I’m thinking to replace it any way. I’m just curious if it could also be a
line that is problematic also?

My second question is, Did the power steering layout really change from 04 to 05?? I’ve noticed from searching on threads on the AZ that in a diagram for an 05+ S4 there is an added cooler? ( #14 in diagram below) I’m curious as to why it would be on the 04 and not the 05??

Maybe I have the wrong picture, but I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t ordering off the wrong parts diagram. I appreciate any information you guys have to offer, Thanks!

All b6 cars use the long snake contraption. 05+ really means 05.5+ aka B7. I don’t remember though if B7 uses a different cooler.

Never heard of line 10 going. Line 11 always goes because it sits right next to the drivers side header. To prevent further issue, get some DEI protective hose wrap to keep the heat off the hose. Don’t waste your time replacing the other lines.

Get some nice stainless worm gear clamps for the two fittings that atatch the high pressure hoses to the cooler. The factory uses a one-use clamp so you’ll need something to replace them.

If you do decide to replace 6, get a new PS fluid tank because you WILL snap the barb right off the bottom of your tank. Mine was brittle at 90k, and others have reported them breaking.

Thanks Joe! I’ve ordered the lines and fluid, hopefully its here by the end of the week. I appreciate the info I’ll go to autozone and grab some heat wrap and stainless clamps. Yea I’ve read in a few diy’s that they’ve snapped. I’ll avoid those lines unless I really need to replace them. Thanks again!
