b6 s4 - shutting off randomly and under load

Hey Guys…

Any idea what this could be… the car randomly shuts off and also while im driving… Last night i was on the high way and it shut of on my 4 times… with one time was starting it the traction control light remained on untill i restarted it…

It just did it again to me on my way in to work… this time i noticed that it happened while i gave it more gas to pass some one…

fuel pump?

Thoughts?

Sounds like your fuel filter is clogged up. By chance, do you hear a humming sound from the right rear seat while driving?

I would try changing your fuel filter and if you still have issues with the engine shutting off then you need a fuel pump too.

Ok so i took it to my good friend at the dealer and had him check it out.

So far the ecu power supply relay and fuel pump relay has been replaced and same issue… I also had a new battery installed to rule it out.

Fuel filter and pump fully functional.

At this point they are having a hard time connecting to the ecu and believe the next move is an ecu replacement…

I will be contacting JHM today to see if they have any suggestions since they were the last to touch the ecu…

I suggested it maybe the eprom came loose?

Any one else have suggestions or have come across this issue?

I’ve had the car shut down on me from a lose eprom on my ECU. The first time it happened, it shut off, I jump started it (manual) and it started again but shut off again a minute later. This second time, I couldn’t get it started again until I opened up the ECU and reseated it. Then it happened to me again as I was leaving my parking garage and couldn’t get it started again until I reseated it again. I’m surprised you were able to get it started again every time. For me, other than that first time, once it got unseated, it wouldn’t start until I fixed it manually. Now, I only have the two front screws on my ECU plastic covering for easy access. Takes me 5 minutes to get to the ECU, open it up, reseat it and put it all back together again.

Food for thought I guess.

Thanks for the info… i have it at the shop and they just popped it open, my friend said it was on there fine, he pressed it back down and re installed the ecu, car has been running for about 30min or so with out shutting off… kind of good news so far…

I actually snapped many of the little fingers off of my EEPROM chip retainer. My solution? A few zip ties laterally and one longitudinally to hold them in place, and a couple tiny pieces of material atop the EEPROM under the zip ties to make sure it holds tight (you’ll see why you need this if you try it). Never had an issue, and it certainly gets hot down here, though I don’t track the car so I don’t see ultimate temperatures.

it Makes sense, its just a pain in the ass to go through this now, and if this is the case I’m not too fond of going through this on a regular basis… my friend took a picture and from what i can see and what he told me it was down pretty firm and not loose, but since then the car has been running pretty much all day and hasn’t shut off compared to it just stalling after being on for a few minutes…

Any one else on the boards experience this?

either way this way me last night on my way home…

I love that… no… noooooooo no no no…

If it gets bad contact the JHM guys I would try the V8@JHM let them know. They have been good about helping anyone I know that was worried about this being an issue.

I had a Issue with mine but it was all my fault as I was messing with it when I tried to get my old ECU OEM to work to see if I cuold sell it. Anyway Once it was on there good I was all set. Usually I would check for codes and if the dash lights up then there is a good direction

One thing I forgot to mention, when my shuts down (the couple times it has), if I plug in my vagcom, I get a communication error (obviously). So, if yours shuts down and you happen to have a vagcom cable and laptop (I always have one in the car), and you can read your ECU, then it’s not ECU related (and if you can’t read your ECU, there’s a good chance it is).

Could be a bad ignition tumbler. Mine causes the opposite of the same issue. Mine won’t shut off sometimes

So you have the only known diesel 4.2 S4? ;D

^I’d love a 4.2tdi S4

Car ran all the way home from the shop, i check it yesterday and same issue… I’m all out of ideas so I’m shipping the ECU back to JHM for diagnosis. I will follow up with results…

Oh to live in Europe. They have beautiful D3 A8’s with a 4.2TDI. Just dreamy . . . I’d rock that as a DD for the rest of my life.

From JHM

ECU sent back due to intermittent no start concerns. Inspected ECU and it worked fine on the bench. As a courtesy we resoldered all 44 pins, replaced the encryption board, replaced the chip and backed up the customers immobilizer information. If the problem continues customer will need to buy a new or used ECU and have us restore his immobilizer information to it. This usually fixes the issue however if it is on our end and not the actual ECU.

Just waiting for it to get delivered… Over all impressed with JHM’s customer service! Hopefully this fixes the issue…

ECU is here… plug this thing in and go for a ride… hope i wont need a tow truck home

Good luck, keep us posted.

thanks!

Update:
Car runs which is good news, just need more time driving it around to make sure the issue has gone away, but so far so good!

Thanks to JHM for their super fast turn-around time!!

Necro bump. I’m having very similar issues and was wondering if you have run into any more problems with your car shutting off on you? Has it been running okay since you got the ECU back?

I’ve been trying to get a hold of JHM for the past week now and haven’t heard so much as a chirp. I have tried the other suggestions and nothing has worked so far. I just want to know whether or not I need to buy a new ECU or anything at this point, but all that has happened so far is a wasted week of riding the bus. I started emailing near the beginning of the week and need to find a solution quick as Thanksgiving is quickly approaching. I had hoped to have some form of information by now, but I’m starting to get to the point where I just need to start shouting from mountain tops to get a response.

When your car shuts off while driving that sucks, when it shuts off and you have to come to a complete stop on the road or in traffic to restart the car because it’s a tiptronic, well that is just scary and dangerous.

JHM is almost entirely in Detroit right now…might be tough to reach them.
