B8.5 Flat bottom steering wheel into a B6 S4 Help

Hello,

I hate to be that guy, but I can’t find any posts that detail the required parts to swap the B8.5 steering wheel into a B6S4, I checked the DIY section on a few Audi sites but I wasn’t able to find it.

Also why is Europrice so expensive ??? The steering wheels are $1,500+ and then another $850

Is there anyone who has a estimated cost to doing the swap with a source to get the wheel for a reasonable price?

If anyone has a link or has the required parts list that they could share, that would be awesome and greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

Well I don’t believe there was ever posted a straight through DIY anywhere, it’s just bits of info here and there which together will yield all you need to know for the swap.
Well, EuroPrice is a business venture, so he has to make $$.

B8.5 steering wheel with correct single-stage airbag
B7 slip ring and control module
Custom wiring harness - supposedly all you actually have to do is move the pins around, that’s the “custom” part lol
VCDS to re-code modules to correct settings

Here’s a couple of threads regarding this:

I believe 65vettec6 retrofitted one in his B6 Avant. Maybe he’ll chim in with more detailed info.

Well that is already a big help!

I will begin reading. Thank you for your help

There was a DIY.

My wheel is for sale, priced competitively. Cheapest I’ve found for the 8V A3 airbag is $220. European sellers don’t want to budge on price, but it will probably go down as the years go on, and more 8V’s crash and get parted. It’s still a new car, so their part prices reflect that. I can get a B6 fender today for $50. The same would be impossible back in 04’.

Details on your wheel?

Thank you for posting the link!

There is a guy that sells S4 wheels for like 500 shipped on audizine that I have seen. Not sure if its the right airbag or not though for our car, I would imagine it is. Only problem is S3 wheel controls do not function for our cars.

PM’d. I can be reached @ AZ.

The controls don’t matter much to me, I don’t even really use my radio haha.

I wish someone would write a definitive what works what does not. That link to AZ has a lot of speculation and only a few answers.

I might just cast caution to the wind and toss in a Sparco flat bottom wheel. The flat bottom is a big deal to me now that I have one in my Q7.

What do you mean, he laid out all the parts

  • MFSW - from an A5 (2009-2014) - 8K0419091CB - ebay.co.uk (Ireland) $100
  • Single Stage Airbag - from an A3/S3 (8V) - 8V0880201N 6PS - eBay.co.uk (Hungary) $300
  • Single Stage Airbag/MFSW harness (mine was included with the airbag I bought)
  • Control Module - from a B7 A4 - 8E0953549Q - salvage yard - $100
  • Clock Spring - from a B7 A4 - 4E0953541A - salvage yard - $60
  • 4 pin connector - from a B7 A4 - 4E0972133 - local/dealer - $5

That’s everything you need, what speculation are you referring too? A4/A5 wheels will have functioning wheel controls. A3 will not for whatever reason. Any B7 control module/clock spring will work too.

Sorry I meant it was unclear about what steering wheels will work with those components. Others have swapped in R8/TTRS/RS3 and even gallardo steering wheels. Also I specifically was looking into a B8.5 flat bottom swap, but the OP in that linked thread speculated that the swap won’t work for any wheel that didn’t have the mode button on the left. I inferred from his post that it would only work with that specific PN steering wheel which is the round sport wheel, not the flat bottom.

Spike you don’t need to be an advertising company here to post part sale threads and details. It might be a good idea to post a thread with prices and product information.

Thanks! Those are half decent prices as well.

To conclude:

Thank you everyone for your help!

I ordered one of the steering wheels that Mdubz posted as well as all the other items listed in Vettes post. It ended up being a little over $1K for everything shipped which is not to bad! The new Ebay shopping cart for the motors section is really cool, you can buy from a bunch of vendors and check out once. I can see this being addictive!

Now I am debating grabbing a RNS E or going aftermarket.

Any feedback?

Cheers
