I’m careless enough to let at least some of you from out of town run my car at Laguna or Thunderhill if you wanted to share a car for an event. Maybe pay something nominal to cover wear and tear and keep it arm’s length. I don’t need to be your instructor.
I would love to take you up on that offer when i am in the bay area! would be fun times
That is a really generous offer west.
also yes, let’s do a ctmp day XD
not sure i’d want to do trillium tho. they are veryyyyy anal and slowly run
how about OTA school?
That’s an awesome gesture. Mad props. Let me know if you’re ever up here too.
If anyone can take me to Road Atlanta again, that would be awesome. I last drove it in 2008 in my BMW. I know GEOJOE on Audizine is based in Atlanta. I’m out there for work a lot now. Heading back to the Porsche Experience Center next week to drive a 991 GT3 and a 991 Turbo S. It might ruin my life.
How does that Porsche drive thing compare to an actual event? I’ve been pushing my boss hard to cover an sae class at bmw’s track in SC. He isn’t really going for it lol.
The 991 GT3 is an absolutely gorgeous car…
I wonder if the cooling on the cts-v is better than the new z06? There is more room for air to circulate in the engine bay at least.
Took a GT3 and a 991 Turbo on track today. Wrote it up here: http://www.planet-9.com/981-cayman-boxster-competition/109153-porsche-experience-center-atlanta-today-2.html#post974485
And maybe now you all the more understand why I keep poking fun of the B8 as a track car
It’s really out of its element.
Good write up. Sounded like a fantastic event. 996 GT3’s (and even 997) just a few years ago were attainable 2nd hand. Now with the recent porsche used market surge, I don’t know anymore…
It looks like it’s about $150k to get into a used one right now. It’s unclear whether any of the inventory has had the engine replaced for the second time (there was another recall).
I think when the 992 GT3 cars go on sale the used market will abate to low $100’s. I’m a potential buyer at that price. I’d have to go back and try the GT4. It may be plenty adequate if it has the same steering feel, braking feel and seating position.
That’s an awesome lap time, especially since you’re only hitting 210 on the back straight. I don’t think I’ve seen any B8 carrying so much corner speed through turn two or five. What’s your set up again? What tires are you running?
Let me know if you’re going to be there again this year, seems like our cars would be a good match.

Yo J!
Amazing! Just watched your vid. The rotation you get at 9/10 is really wicked
Does your car work when you do not lift going into 4? I can do it flat out (but my brakes dont hold up for 5a after doing it once or twice per session). I’ll ping you for sure the next time I go. You go with an Audi now, or still the NSX? NSX is way way way more fun I bet.
My car “setup” is actually really lame. I’m on KW Street Comfort, Dunlop Z2 and that’s pretty much it. The rest is alignment. Oh and I have some sway bars. It’s only my 4th time at Mosport GP, and I know i"m leaving a lot of time on the table–9 and 3 especially. I know I can bring it down to 1:37 with more seat time there. I can probably enter 1 faster too, and trail brake into 2. Just takes big balls to do that.
For me and how I take turn 2: I just go wide open throttle once the weight transition has completed after the turn in to the 1st apex is completed. There’s where all my speed is coming from.
For 5, I throw away 5a and do not care about the apex. I set it up entirely for 5b and do a late apex. Hit WOT once I get it pointed to the apex. Exit speed from there is around 80-85kph
Best lap time of the day was a 1:46. Most of them were 1:48 or 1:50.
I try to drop half a wheel on every apex:
The M4 has no advantage (lap after lap after lap I’m ahead):
Some shots of the rollbar:
Did you run with HOD? Was that David Ray overtaking you on the front straight?
In this case I overtook the Mustang late. I don’t recall the circumstance. Borelli racing was there with $1500 a day rental spec Mustang cars. I don’t know if this was one of theirs or a private owner.
It was an HOD event so you know some knuckleheads wrinkled their $100k cars or removed the paint on one side.
Two more favorites. Front swaybar set to stiff seems to be working for me. The rear is set to soft because I have a very high spring rate back there.
Had a great weekend at Sonoma Raceway. I know my shifting isn’t super quick but the clutch was sticking on the release from downshifts. It would engage the gear, then the pedal would sort of stop for a fractional second. I’ll try bleeding the slave line, and if not I probably have some problem with the slave cylinder. Does anyone sell an upgraded slave cylinder?
Here’s a quick video of a 2 minute lap:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hxIlLYEE6Jc
That video really captures what the Milltek sounds like. With no back seats or carpeting/liner in the trunk, it turns that whole cavity into a giant resonator. The REVO 100 octane program makes a very deep raspy note from 3000-5000 RPM, then the whole system quiets down to redline.
Here’s a longer video of driving around in pouring rain, sliding into each apex, charging up hills with quattro, and braking/skidding down hills. Still managed a 2:31 best lap in those conditions and the pilot sport cup 2 held up just fine in wet. Around 17 minutes I turn I get confident and turn into a maniac.
Nice West! Looks like some serious fun, maybe some day if I’m lucky I’ll get out there too. :-\
