BBS wheels thread

I have to say I love the BBS CX-R I have on my car ($2250 for a set). They’re a very strong flow formed wheel from Japan made to BBS specs, and are actually stronger than most forged wheels (but not lighter). They weigh about 23 pounds in 19 x 8.5 and easily fit a 265 tire (or a 255 cup tire) with the proper bulge you see on motorsports cars like a Porsche GT. Not that there is anything wrong with stretch on the street, I just wouldn’t pick it for the the track.

The BBS FI-R takes it to a new level. In 19 x 9.5 they’re 16 pounds. They’re going to run closer to $7500 for a set when the first production run shows up in the US this month. It’s the little things that BBS gets right. I read about these morons on Audizine who go to the track and their center caps melt. Not with BBS. Quality throughout. Even the valve caps are like big thimble sleeves that cover all of the black rubber on the stem. The machining on the spokes is a work of art that’s hard to appreciate in an iPhone photo downsized for a free forum.

Do you have a picture of the rims. Thats a lot of money on a set of rims

west, why not also look at Rays Engineering/volks?
The factory that does all the forging in Japan is the same factory that builds all the serious race wheels - Rays being one of the biggest users of that factory. You can get some TE37SL for less than the cost of those BBS F1R’s I would think. Also, do you know what the 16lb F1R’s are rated at (JVL/VIA load rating) in 19x9.5? Curious how BBS stacks up in that regard.

love volks TE37. Excellent, Great looking, superduper light.

Reasonably priced too. Bolt holes are awkward. You’ll need some custom adjustments

Those are really nice wheels, and different from the rest. I think they only come in 114x5, so you have to redrill them. Also, the offsets might be a little awkward at proper widths (9"-9.5") for the fender challenged S4. But west is running -10 deg of camber, so maybe it’s possible.

Someone posts Rays wheels in my BBS wheels thread and downvotes my handle. I love AudiRevolution.

i did no such down voting (for the record)

Regarding “fender challenged”, i can fit 9.5 wide wheels under my car with 45 offset and 15mm spacers and not have an issue (out front anyway. havent tried rear). So that’s 30 offset 9.5 wide that can fit under there. For most any track prepped car, we’ll have space to fit these

My 255 Cup2 tire might be causing the rear bumper cover edge to peel back. Kind of annoying if that’s the cause and not some other careless person or car wash tugging on it.

How much negative camber and what size tires? Typically rubbing will start around the upper ET30’s offset on a 9.5" wheel and 255 tires (assuming standard alignment settings and ride height). It would take some combination of negative camber, stretched tires, or fender work to go much lower. I get some minor rubbing with an ET40, Michelin PSS tires, and any camber setting below -1.5 degrees.

Is it confirmed that the FI-R is going to come in a 5x112 fitment for our cars? Last I saw was only BMW and Porsche fitments for at least a while, and by looking at the wheel, re-drilling is not an option. It is one bad ass wheel. I love it. Not that it really matters, but a set is right at $8k and you aren’t likely to find any “deals” on those.

To echo what others have said, I love Volk wheels. I have a couple sets on others cars in the past. For a mass produced wheel, they can’t be beat. I just wish they offered more/better fitments for us. Without re-drilling, the options are pretty limited.

I’m running -3 camber up front with tires that are 9.5 inches wide on the tread face (9.8 wide section width) – so these are as pretty much as wide as 265 PSS’s. ride height is at about 25.5 ftg.

OH i forgot to mention 1 thing re: centercaps - you don’t want to run them on the track anyway.
Not only is it a hazard (they can pop off and cause unnecessary debris), but they will melt if you brake enough. In addition, they keep the heat in at the hub and wheel bearing, so it’s not doing anyone any good by keeping them on.

I actually do not run center caps period (even on the street). For racing events, they are not even allowed.

those look like LE37T aka lipped TE37s

thanks for the reminder. -5 now. I need to set a 24 hr alarm

Don’t think they are. That is the full “formula” finish, where the LE37T was a light gunmetal center with polished lip.

Thanks. That’s a good point of reference. You can definitely squeeze a lot more in the fender with that much negative camber.

You can buy the Volk TE-37 TTA wheels in 5x112
