I think I posted this once here, but according to me, the F40 is a desperate attempt by Ferrari to answer Porsche. In order to do so, Ferrari pulled out all the stops. When that FAILED, they pulled 350 lbs out of the car in the form of everything. That differentiates a comfortable Street vehicle from the race car version of that vehicle (seats, comfort, carpets, radio, climate control etc) …and ended up with a race car they sold to the public pretending it was a street car.
They ended up with an ugly, vulgar, stripped out bucket in order to save face and not get their asses whipped by Porsche.
Technically wasn’t it the 961…I forget. I have all my original mags from 1986 I think, wasn’t the 959 doing an 11.7 with the fifth wheel test rig? As much as I loved the car, lol look how far we’ve come.
The mclaren F1, hands down, redefined everything IMO.
The McLaren F1 vs the Porsche 959 WERE arguably the two best cars EVER…UNTIL the Porsche 918 and McLaren P1 came out. I was only 2 when the 959 was around so I originally didn’t include it until beem posted and I looked it up.
In the F1/959’s time, the numbers they put down, and tech they brought hands down made them the best ever. However McLaren and Porsche just did it again with the P1/918.
Personally I voted for the Mclaren which I surprised myself because what I first saw it I thought it was the ugliest POS ever! Somehow it has grown on me and I love it now.
Some on the list are just jokes.
LaFerrari lost me right when they announced it was going to be called “LaFerrari”, how fucking stupid! Car looks forced, doesn’t flow, especially with that side scoop. However, I’m sure it performs and it may even out perform the Porsche, but I doubt the P1
The Aston one-77 is just sex! But overpriced and under performs
The Venom GT is a overpriced poser muscle car…
The Koegnigsegg is pretty sweet but lacking curves
The Bugatti is dated and ugly
Lamborghini’s chief/head of design needs to be fired. The aventador came out alright and that aventador J is pretty amazing, but the rest are WTF? Even the newest huracan looks like plain shit. The cluster fuck on the back of the veneno is hideous, and the egoista is a try hard king douche mobile. Also they are under performers overpriced.
The Pagani is pretty sweet with the best finish of them all hands down! AND it performs, but there is something about the look that I does’t quite flow…I can’t seem to put my finger on it yet
The Deval sixteen with 5000hp…must have been tuned by PES. Looks like shit as well
SSC tuatara looks like a wanna be lamborghini with a security camera exhaust
SSC ultimate aero another lamborghini wanna be
W motors 3.4mil for that? Someone’s been smoking too much opium and hasish.
Love the Ferrari 599xx it was my favorite before the P1/918 were released. Too bad it can’t be had on the streets
Adding in the 959/McLaren make the poll a bit difficult. You’ve got “best supercar ever”, but is that to say currently “the most impressive performance”, or “the most revolutionary”? The 959/F1 changed the game back in the day, but they obviously don’t touch what most of the regular supercars have been capable of for quite a while now. Also 90% of the list is brand new/yet to be released.
Yeah I voted based on what I feel is the “best Hypercar” based on today’s standards. I must admit I didn’t catch the “ever” part in the title so I was very confused as to why people are bring the 959 and F1 into the discussion…
I was in high school when the 959 came out. There was no interweb, as strange as that might seem today.
The relatively ancient Lamborghini Countach was still one of the “supercars” of the day. But you have to understand the context at the time… The world was just starting to come out of a prolonged drought of performance vehicles. For the past ~15 years, it was all about economy, safety, and reliability. Just look at the Car & Driver 10 Best from 1986:
[quote]+ 1986 Audi 5000CS Turbo Quattro
1986 Chevrolet Corvette
1986 Ford Taurus/Mercury Sable
1986 Honda Accord
1986 Honda Prelude
1986 Lincoln Mark VII LSC
1986 Porsche 944
1986 Saab 9000
1986 Toyota MR2
1986 Volkswagen GTI

You can see how expectations must have been relatively low. '86 Ford Taurus? Sheesh. Original Robocop material. I remember the year clearly, and the performance results of the 959 were out of this world. A few years later the F1 reset the bar in shocking fashion, but the paradigm shift had already happened.
[Sidebar: My three most memorable magazine articles before the interweb:
959 introduction.
C&D or R&T Zero to Sixty race between the sublime Euro E36 M3 and silly Subaru WRC car. The Subaru won by a lot. Then they ran the Subaru in dirt, and it crushed the M3 again. WHAT WHAT WHAT???
E28 BMW M5 introduction. Still my favorite all time car.]
Ya, it has always been there and I only edited the post adding the F1 / 959 to it. Most likely getting hits due to google searches
When I think of “best ever” it is best performance, best looks, best etc…so that rules out the 959 and F1 even though there were both the best in their time when they first came out.l
You know what I’d LOVE to have…more than the 959…any of the homologation specials they made for the group B rally rules. Specifically the ford RS200…killer killer car.
This 1988 BMW M5 has 230k miles on the chassis, but the seller swapped in a 3.6L engine from an E34 M5 that now has 110k on it. The rest of the car appears stock and in good condition, and the seller has owned it since 2008. Find it here on Craigslist in Madison, Wisconsin for $7500. Special thanks to BaT reader Cameron P. for this submission!
