Thanks for the update FWP, glad to see it’s running better. So you made a bunch of changes and still experienced your symptoms… Then you modified the PCV to increase flow through it and it alleviated your issues completely? Just trying to make sure I’m understanding it correctly.
Do you want me to tell you how many people PM’ed me on AZ saying they had THE EXACT SAME problem as me? And they tried carbon cleans/new injectors/O2’s/everything else and it still pinged? Relax.
My car stopped pinging (well, mostly, it STILL pings on tip-in at high rpm) once JHM made a new fucking tune for me. Car’s been fine since, and that was a few months ago. I just did a carbon clean and it’s the typical seat-of-the-pants difference that I feel, car definitely has some power restored.
And Jake - I appreciate it, but no. I’m actually still waiting for that other tune that gets rid of the pinging issue I still have.
Even though my PCV valve and the whole system seemed to “technically” be working correctly, yes, since I modified it, my car has stopped smoking. I’ve tried to get it to do it a few times in the same exact situations as before - stopped at a light for a while, stab the gas and there used to be a puff of blue/white smoke, now I get nothing.
I’ll pop the IM off in another few thousand miles to see how the intake ports look, I don’t have my hopes up that this will get rid of oil getting pushed down past the valve seals all together, but maybe it’ll at least slow it down some. Ideally, I’d like to figure out to plumb in a vacuum pump to draw about 10" of vacuum at all times to see if that has any affect.
The car didn’t start pinging until the very moment I drove away from Blake’s house after installing the tune. I was told many many times that it would “go away” and stop, but it never did. The only time it didn’t ping was when the ambient temp was under 100 degrees (when it was above 105 I’d hear it all the time, especially when it got up around 115). After the new tune (they obviously just backed off the timing), I went from pulling the max the car is capable of pulling which is 16 degrees to “only” 5 or 6 degrees. Now that it’s cooler out and after I did the CC, it pulls 1 or 2 degrees.
Pinging can ABSOLUTELY be heard with no problem, windows up or down, between hard shifts. It only does it for a split second, but what follows immediately after is the car falling on its face. No, I’m not breaking the tires loose, I think the car is compensating for a sudden shit load of knock and retards the timing like crazy, then after about 1 second the car wakes back up and takes off again. If I don’t do super quick throttle tip in into the next gear, I don’t hear it, but if I stab the gas, be prepared for the sound of someone throwing marbles into a bathtub. And I’ll say it again just to clarify - it never used to do this before the tune. As much as I appreciate JHM’s efforts, I got the tune back in the beginning of summer and here it is the end of the year and I’m still having issues. I couldn’t “play” with my car all summer or go to any track events in the fall out here because I was always waiting for JHM to tell me what to try next or waiting for the new tune. You’d be fucking frustrated, too.
Vacuum at idle DEFINITELY increased, to the point where it’s nearly impossible to remove my oil fill cap unless I use both hands and rip it off the valve cover, and the car will die instantly. So it’s a step in the right direction (creating negative pressure behind the valve seals instead of positive pressure).
However, after driving it for a few days, I suddenly started noticing that the idle would not return to 750 RPMs and then I started noticing a very high pitched whistle accompanying the high idle. Figuring it was the PCV that had gone bad (probably the diaphragm ripped), I took it apart and did find a tear in the PCV diaphragm.
I bought and installed a brand new PCV, but I did modify this one again the same way as I did the first. The screeching noise and high idle remained, to my disappointment.
I spoke with Blake who also did this mod, and he isn’t having any issues as of yet. The noise mine is making only happens when the car is warm, and when the throttle blade is closed. As soon as I give it any gas which would decrease the amount of vacuum in the intake manifold and the whole PCV system, the noise goes away. The sound is very hard to pin-point because it is so high pitched, but it’s definitely a leak as evidence by my high idle and also my short term fuel trims went way up since last I checked when it was in the stock configuration.
So I took everything apart over the weekend looking for the leak. There is the large hose that is crimped onto a port coming off of the back of the intake manifold which goes to a 3 way union, one way goes to the line that connects to upstream of the TB, and then the other line is the hard line that goes to the brake booster. I found a very small crack in the brake booster line near the T union, and when I blew into the line and plugged up the other ports, I could feel air (and later I sprayed windex on it and saw bubbles coming out) coming out of the top of this - https://www.ecstuning.com/Audi-B7_RS4--V8/ES283826/ I could also suck air in, which to me was a sign of a fairly significant vacuum leak since air could easily get into it and go straight into the intake manifold, so I epoxy’ed the top edge of that part and the small crack in the brake booster line and everything was air tight.
Put it all back together and again, the same screeching noise once the car warmed up some. I think the noise is coming from below the rubber intake boot somewhere, I have stuck my hand down there to see if I can make the noise change at all to see if it’s a particular line, but I haven’t had any luck. It’s only happening under this really high vacuum load being placed on the system now, and only after the car warms up.
The only difference I can think of between my car and Blake’s is that he has the SAI removed, and I see there are vacuum lines going to the two “regulators” or whatever they’re called that mount to the back of the heads. I feel like that’s where the noise may be coming from, because I’ve checked everything else, and that includes taking apart the new PCV to make sure it’s ok.
Oh, and I have noticed that there is a decent amount of oil now in the intake manifold, the increased flow is causing it to blow right by the “cyclones” in the PCV and it’s going straight into the IM. Next stage would be to install a legit oil catch can and have a fitting made that can replace the PCV.
For now, though, I’m going to install a new TB gasket to see if that could be it, and then go back to the stock PCV to make sure the car runs ok in stock form, then see about possibly decreasing the size of the opening I’ve made in the ‘modified’ PCV so that it’s not allowing as much air through until I can find the leak.
This was posted on AZ but I thought that I should forward it over here:
[QUOTE=FWP!;11433746]Report for the 6 OEM injectors. They said #2 was leaking and wouldn’t hold pressure initially, but it was ok after cleaning. Could be the cause of my issue. Will put it all back together tonight.
So you had pinging with the old PCV valve and the fuel injectors were not working correctly. Are you still going to blame the tune? It is a fair question and not meant as an attack.

I think this is a fair question. We have been saying all along that with hundres and hundreds of people all having the JHM tune with no issues when you get a small few with issues its time to look further. This was one of the things I talked about in the investigation thread for the RS4.
We have seen issues with stock RS4 cars having the same things FWP has been seeing. Its good to see him send out his injectors to look more into this
What were the results of the 6 and 7. Given the bigger issues that the number 2 wouldnt hold pressure thats huge issue.
Justin, he also posted this earlier than that post. He isn’t the only person to find injectors stuck in place. It has happened to other people and me a few times.
[QUOTE=FWP!;11431326]I got 6 of my injectors out and took them to a shop I found in Phoenix that does cleaning and flow matching for FIS injectors. I tried getting the last 2 out, but they were nearly welded in place and ruined them getting them out, so I have two on order from rockauto that should be here tomorrow, then I’ll take them over to the shop so that all 8 can get flow matched and also so we can compare new injectors to my OEM’s. They’re also giving the fuel rails a bath in the ultrasonic cleaner. Looking forward to getting it all put back together to see how she runs.

I took mine out the other day and had a few that were stuck as well. Physically, 4 survived, 3.5 I wouldn’t reuse, and .5 still in the head. That’s what I get for having never pulled them out before. 2 of the 4 survivors were having issues, so I’ll probably have them all tested to see just how off they were. Either way, 8 new ones are going in.
For those interested, I’m pretty sure two of my injectors were fouled after finishing up a carbon clean. While I feel I’m pretty careful about keeping things clean, debris must’ve found it’s way in the fuel hard lines. Call it a reminder to everyone to be very mindful when working with the fuel system. It doesn’t take much and there you are, taking the IM off again…
