Bulb or Ballast?

My right headlight (HID low beam) recently changed from a bright white to a slightly faded blueish color. It flickers, goes out, then comes back on frequently. I get a warning message “right dipped headlight” when it goes out.

I know I could test it by switching the bulbs, but I was hoping that I didn’t need to. Do these symptoms point to one or the other? Or is switching the bulbs the only way to find out? Thanks for any help or advice.

I had a similar issue, I was told that it’s actually pretty common. Just change the bulb, that should take care of it. But it will take you all of five minutes and a drive to test it first. All my flickering and dipped headlight issues went away with a new blub. Hope this helps.

^x2. It’s the quickest easiest fix and part to test.

It is likely the bulb, and I don’t know why you don’t want to do a simple swap of the bulbs between lights to verify it. Also, be sure to buy a pair of new bulbs so that you don’t have two different colored bulbs. May look odd driving down the road. Also, if one died, the other probably won’t last to much longer.

Thanks for the replies. I don’t mind doing the test. I just figured that if the symptoms were obvious to you guys, then I wouldn’t need to. Thanks again!

i swapped out my headlights for the r8 style drl headlights a while ago, then the other day i decided to go back to the original headlights because i got sick off the cut off on the aftermarkets but now my lights wont level out. i get the auto adjusting malfunction warning. any suggestions? or does anyone know what fuse to pull out to get rid of the warning?

The warning is caused because your headlights were disconnected and then the car turned on (basically when you swapped out your headlights)

All you need to do is clear the codes that it threw and you will be fine. My dealer tried to stick me for a $500 replacement part, I told them not to worry about it anyway I got on really well with my service manager and then the next time I took the car in they cleared the codes and I got my auto level back.

hahah dealers for the loss

Yes indeed, but I ended up getting along with the Service Manager and he put me on a list to go on an Audi track day. I got to thrash around S5, S6 TT-S and they had a pro takes us around Eastern Creek in an RS6.

Do you guys have any suggestions on where to buy new bulbs? is 4300k stock? Thanks

I plan on getting the OSRAM CBI bulbs when I replace mine from MotiveMods. Either way, don’t expect them to be very cheap if you are getting genuine bulbs (>$100/pair). And 4300k is the stock temperature.

Sonic Tuning might be a good place to get bulbs

Depending on what year your car is, you need to make sure that you get the right bulbs.
02 cars have d2s bulbs
03+ cars have d1s bulbs

But I would check either way…stupid year to year differences.

Sonic Tuning has the bulbs for $70 / pair. Are they crap bulbs or would they be fine?

Unfortunately I can’t comment on their quality as I bought d1s bulbs not realizing that there was a difference with 02 cars.

In that light I haven’t heard anything bad about them.

The thing that worries me about their bulbs is that they just list them as OEM bulbs, not who they are OEM for, or who makes them, or where they get them from. Not saying they won’t work fine, but they could easily be made in China knock-offs. The two issues I saw when looking for new bulbs were off temperature color, and less light output. hidplanet.com is a good place to read about HID bulbs/projectors/etc. if you want more info.

Good point about their products

I have a pair of 6000K d1s bulbs and they are indeed some chines knock offs. I couldn’t even tell you the brand cause it is not in English lol. The price is what attracted me the most.

DDM tuning has bulbs for dirt cheap now. I just bout some D2S for the fiancee and it was $30 shipped for a pair of H.I.D. bulbs. I know they’re chinese bulbs, but they’ve been in my car for several years just fine.
