c0ntract_thrillas- Introduction and B6 S4 project

Thanks for the tip! The car is on jack stands right now so it is level, I read the bentley for the procedure and you are bang on.

That’s cool man, I just noticed you said the ass end was up. I wanted to make sure you weren’t trying to drain/fill it at an angle.

That is the big reason for me joining, the quality of the builds and the fact that many users were doing the work themselves. I had read through a lot of posts here, including your own and I gained a lot of insight so I felt this would be a good fit for me. There are some fantastic build threads and technical discussions here that are on point with real feedback which is what I want, often when searching out “JHM direct port nitrous” or " JHM SC feedback" I get a lot of internet BS, and a lot of old old threads where people are just dumping on products or relying on antiquated thinking.

In regards to the tensioner, it comes with the 5 rib belt , I have not upgraded to the 6 rib pulley yet just the LW crank pulley 5 rib, from what I understand though, the tensioner will accommodate the 6 rib belt though when I upgrade to the 6 rib LWCP and 6 rib alternator pulley.

I probably should have gone with the 6 rib kit from the jump in retrospect, but there are a few local B6/7 S4’s that will probably snap this up when I upgrade next year.

Yeah I see what your’e saying, I should have worded it better haha. I have a hover car right now its floating in the air.

Well it’s great to have you here. When you see people struggling on the other forums just send them here. Your so right just lots of BS out there. Here it’s real and it’s facts.

The really cool thing about the jhm lineup is that most all parts are part of the bigger system. You can build your car slowly piece at a time to get the supercharger kit down the line. It’s really cool that each step not only gets you better parts and performance but your that many pieces closer to the supercharger kit. By the time your done you get a nice discount on the supercharger parts you don’t need to buy because you already have them.

Nice car! Audis look great in Red and that is a good mod list. You are really covering all the bases. Keep up the good work.

Well it was a long winter here in Nova Scotia… but I used the time wisely! Almost everything installed, the only remaining parts to go on are my JHM intake manifold and the valley pan/check valve kit from ECS tuning. The car is going to a local shop called ISI to have the suspension balanced and corner weighted for me next week.

The other night I put my JHM tune on the car and I love it! The Trexturk down pipes sound mean and a lot of the local muscle car guys are amazed that its an Audi making all the racket.

I have a full build thread on my local car club, so I will just make this a photo essay.

The long story short is that I replaced everything under the wheel wells with new components, hardware and fittings. I also did all the mounts in the car, 034 motorsport engine mounts, zero gap snub, apikol rear diff (race), 034 upper strut mounts, 034 trans mount and etc etc. I did the diff flush, trans flush, coolant and oil services. The parts list is constantly being updated as the car won’t ever be finished

Thanks to everyone who helped me on here , I received some tech advice from a few members here and put it to good use! Some of the Jbones DIY were really helpful in the installs.

Next up is the JHM clutch and LW flywheel, and a timing service kit. I just hit 100,000 kms and my chains are quiet, but I want some peace of mind before I invest in a JHM supercharger kit this winter  I must say JHM has been awesome to deal with, them and the guys at 034 have been really helpful and provided me some great tech support on the fly.

Down pipes are far more of a motherf$#@er to install than any DIY lets on. That 12 o’clock bolt is a night mare!

gorgeous car. wicked mod list.

Thanks sir!

Well it has been a busy couple of months.

I ended up installing my JHM intake manifold, my 5r clutch kit and all the other goodies.

I took it to the track this weekend, it was my first time racing at the strip since 2009 and it was my first time ever racing this car… needless to say I made a few mistakes (all of which were outlined in the 1/4 mile advice thread). I am just copy and pasting from my posts on another site I frequent. I wrote about my runs in detail including what I blatantly did wrong ( I have footage from my go pro, I will upload it so you can laugh at me) .

Anyway I think its important to be open about your failures, it helps to be honest about that shit and make progress.

Below is copied posts from my local site *there are a few inside jokes and random names in there, ignore that I am just too lazy to retype everything or pick and choose the relevant information.

This was last week

Finally work and family let up enough for me to tackle my manifold, so Yesterday I began the install of my JHM Intake manifold/spacers/polished throttle body and some other goodies.

I managed to get pretty far into the tear down before I realized they forgot to send me my longer manifold bolts and studs ::slight_smile: So now I am waiting on the bolts to finish the install. Anyway no big deal, I have time to kill, I am going to push forward and do the valley pan gasket, oil check valves and oil squirter for the tensioners. I don’t have a rattle, but I want to keep it that way. The check valves getting stuck open is a common issue with the B6/7 S4’s ( it is the primary cause of the tensioner failure) and in my bentley it advised to replace them… since I am pulling the manifold and doing %80 of the work already, whats a $100 in parts for a bit of security.

Well it has been a busy fucking week with the S4! I had a lot of fun, a lot of stress, a few visitors and I made two ok passes at the strip

As usual there was more of this

TUESDAY
My manifold bolts finally fucking landed and I spent the evening coaxing the manifold into the car, it went pretty smooth the vac lines were a total slut to get in. I also replaced all the hardware along the way because thats the kinda guy I am. I also went with new NGK plugs for more bang bang

Scotty Dunks and Alex Czaplay came out to join us for a little rip to Timmmmmmys in New Minas.

(That supra has 500 WHP and also raced at Greenfield with us on the weekend.)

FRIDAY

Jon came down to go racing with me and help out, it was great to have him around, made things go a lot smoother.

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f202/sewermonsterBW/Mobile%20Uploads/A8F60ECC-C300-40B6-8C95-D49A8D6E2056_zpsp6x2lpuk.jpg

We had to raise my car up a few inches to squeeze the new rolling stock under the fenders, despite being 18x8.5 they take up more room with the different tire profile of 245/40/18. New wheels feel fucking awesome and once they hook, they grip like crazy.

Scotty was supposed to come with us but had started his DSG swap the day before, Jon and I felt bad and decided we would help him finish the install

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f202/sewermonsterBW/Mobile%20Uploads/F5F7B223-FCCF-40C1-996E-04E6355F7448_zpsiedmguhq.jpg

We started around 10 and finally wrapped up around 12:30 (not bad for a driveway build in the dark lol)

Unfortunately the new DSG had a fucked mechtronic unit and after using VCDS we still couldn’t get the car to shift properly.

We called it a night.

Captain Potato head and I got up at 6 am grabbed coffee and headed to Greenfield. We met up with a few of my buddies from the Maritime Audi group and headed down.
____--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
FOR THOSE INTERESTED MY FRIEND JON’s STAGE 2+ APR TUNED B8 S4 DSG (AWE Manifold back exhaust, APR tune, APR pulley, Carbonio intake NO TCU TUNE ) RAN A 12.41 @117 mph That car is so fucking fast the muscle car guys didn’t know what the fuck was happening when a sleeper Audi beat the Hellcats time  a lot of people were surprised including the commentator hahahaha

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f202/sewermonsterBW/Mobile%20Uploads/48049CBB-B6D6-42D8-BD49-6FBA9F1822CC_zpsxqsujsfz.jpg

Well what a day at the track! It was really cool in the morning @ 10.5*c and the weather was amazing. A massive turnout meant we didn’t get many runs in, I essentially got there at 8am for tech, had my first run at 10:30, ran again at 1:30 and then Gamblers again at 3. It was not ideal for getting seat time and trying to improve my time. I uploaded footage of my runs to Facebook (including the one I royally fucked by leaving traction control on and missing 3rd 14.66 @99.89 mph) if anyone follows me you can find the videos of the runs on Maritime audi or the other page I frequent.

A lot of the cars were having traction problems the Hellcat was ran two 12.50’s (he had one good 11.55 run), my buddies 500 whp supra on slicks made 15.00 @117, 14.40@ 118 and then put it off the track mid run on his gamblers run ) the Boss 302 stang ran a 14.89 and 14.66 (see below).

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f202/sewermonsterBW/Mobile%20Uploads/98A2DCBA-C00B-4CCA-8708-409A8CA0A56F_zpshpgiegiu.jpg

Break down of my runs:

My first run was a calamity of fucking errors. I fucked it proper. In staging I was behind about 40 cars so I had turned my car off to prevent heat soak, I managed to get up to the line and I forgot to turn off traction control… a 5000 rpm clutch dump and I nearly face planted into the steering wheel (Lucky has a video from behind me you can see the car nose dive haha) we have a running joke among us OG’s that Red calipers = fast, Zack always gives me shit for having silver calipers saying they slow me down, in this case he was right hahahah it was fucking wild when those brakes clamped down and killed my 60 foot. I ran 14.66 and still trapped 99.89 MPH!

I was so rattled I missed my 3rd gear shift as well. (still managed to pull the win) the video of this is on Facebook

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f202/sewermonsterBW/Mobile%20Uploads/BCC02AF8-F4AF-4E0F-8EA7-743C78E1EF9D_zps2bcffz9m.jpg

My second run, I was overly focused on not embarrassing myself further so I was paying attention to detail. I made sure traction control was off at least a dozen times while I was on the line. I was too focused on not missing shifts and was pretty casual about it, according to the guys who saw my footage and Grahame, it looks like I was driving to work not running a 1/4 mile  .

One of my biggest problems was getting to the line without getting my tires wet, they over sprayed the box heinously and I couldn’t get to stage dry. I was having some wheel spin off the line and that killed my 60 foots. The new clutch is everything I was promised, JESUS THIS CAR HOOOOOOOKS !

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f202/sewermonsterBW/Mobile%20Uploads/54F32607-FDE4-465F-96D4-605B0CF2E416_zps3soynkba.jpg

After my second run Jon was concerned with the way my rear tires were moving, we jacked the car up and sure enough my factory rear diff mount was loose as fuck. The bushing is shot but some of the bolts were backed out and the upper one was bending. John was awesome and got that fucker back into place (albeit with the shot bushing) before my next run. I have a new Apikol Race diff mount, I had been swamped all week and with helping scott get his trans in I didn’t get a chance to install it. :?

My third run, I had my window down.

I went to stage and buddy started talking to me so I rolled my window down, to hear him i thought I rolled it up but I didn’t and because I had my helmet on I didn’t realize it until it was too late

With the window down all the way through the 1320 I managed a best of 13.51 haha I was still granny shifting.

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f202/sewermonsterBW/Mobile%20Uploads/2AB70C2B-471F-40AA-AFDA-472DCBACA5BB_zpsb6k0l8px.jpg

I need more seat time, to install my new rear diff mount and better prep, but I am %100 certain I can run into the low 13’s maybe even make a 12

(PHOTO CREDIT NICK PAIN 902 PRODUCTIONS and JON HOPKINS)

Really happy I had captain potato puncher with me, helped a lot especially when I fucked my rear diff mount, we put the car in the pit jacked it up and got under there, I wasn’t able to get the bolts back tight but Jon using his magical powers coaxed the bolts back in.

MIND FUCK OF THE DAY

I drove my buddies Audi Q7 3.0 with 21" wheels and zero weight reduction (tire in the trunk, pop in the cup holders), (bone stock) 14.91  I almost got the Boss… like it was neck and neck at the 1/4 . Everyone was laughing when they saw us line up, nobody was laughing when I pulled back to pitts 8O

what was the density altitude? Nice thread with lots of pictues.

Looks like some real fun! You’re right about red, afterall fastest B6 S4 out there is still Brilliant Red.
Practice makes perfect  keep it up and you’ll be cutting faster times.

I am not %100 certain what the DA is, but using an online calculator: the track is 325 feet elevation, the temp was 15C ish at the highest point in the day (1:30 pm) I am pretty sure the dew point was 14C but I can’t find out for sure (just using my kestrel) my suunto core said the HPA was 1024 , I used a DA online calculator after the fact and it said it would be a DA of 281 feet.

I need a lot more seat time, I will upload my videos here tonight.

I know I could be a lot faster, the car was working really good. Like I said I ran my 13.51 with my windows down ;D my 60 foots are not very good, but they had water all over staging and I only had 3 runs all day so I didn’t change tire pressure (40 lbs) at all.

Thanks for comments gents! It was a lot of fun, that 5R clutch is the business! I have never dropped a clutch from 5000 rpm (or whatever JHM actually has it do) what a rush!

Does Audi revolution have a FB group? I can link the videos now if you do.

[quote=“c0ntract_thrilla,post:30,topic:6841”]
You sure about that?

Tensioners failing has very little to do with those check valves (if any…)

[quote=“BCsniper,post:34,topic:6841”]

Perhaps I am misinformed, I was told that by a master tech.

According to the master tech at my local Audi, when the valves begin to get stuck open it lets the pressure off the tensioner causing the rattle. The rattle is the chain slapping against the guide, its this repeated “guide slap” that causes the guide to fracture and fall apart over time. It also naturally becomes more brittle due to the heat and stress it endures.

Further to that, in the Bentley it references a memo that states if the engine has a warm start rattle to replace the check valves.

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f202/sewermonsterBW/5D9F2C01-AE83-4300-B048-D54A0247FCFD_zpsavixjxrg.jpg

I’m well aware of that, but it’s funny that people have been doing timing overhauls for several years now and replacing that valves only just got popular after p3u on Audizine posted about them a year ago.

I think we’ve only read of one guy who actually had valves that were actually stuck and would not close at all.
Read-up more on it here…failure is made up from a bunch of different things, you can’t pin it any any one item alone. The tensioners have tiny oil galley’s that get gummed, guides get brittle and break over time, Cam adjusters wollow out and throw timing codes, electrical adjuster sometimes fail, some even try to claim that the chains stretch ::slight_smile:

[quote=“BCsniper,post:34,topic:6841”]

I’ve heard this from JHM as well. (supporting BC sniper)

interesting, well I guess it was just some ill informed preventative maintenance lol

Thanks for the feedback though!

I thought that chains wear between the connections causing it to elongate, its not stretching its the removal of material ;D

Ok more background details. Me and my buddies from the local audi club wanted to get all the different generations of S4 together at the track: we had a White URS4 (stock), a Red B6 s4 (mine) a B7 S4 black, a black pearl? B8 s4 (APR stage 2+ with TCU) and a white B8.5 s4 (APR stage 2+)…

The three guys with B5 s4’s we invited ( a noggy, a silver and a imola) all couldn’t make it for one reason or another.

Anyway, here is what everyone was actually wanting to see. I included my bad run.

the bone stock URS4 ran 14.20 for those who are interested. It is all original, my buddy just bought it and has yet to replace anything… even the original factory exhaust
