c0ntract_thrillas- Introduction and B6 S4 project

Lol falls into the same category as switching to a different oil brand/weight or that wave of oil sump miracle.

Exactly. I told him when he went to post all that about the oil check valve that I had tried that a few time eairler. And the clacking noise came back.

Sure the check valves can get stuck open but thats not what causes the finial issue. I know the dealer update talkes about the oil check valve but then again the dealer still says our guides are a lifetime part.

Contract great thread update. Lots of pictures and details. The track times fell right in line. Your right with a little more seat time the over all 1/4 mile times will fall.

Yeah I need more seat time for sure! It was really busy, I had 3 runs the entire day and botched one and made a dumb mistake on my last one.

Oddly enough I had forgot the roll my windows up during my best time (13.51)… I mean they were all the way down, so who knows how much time that cost me

Good stuff man, keep at it. I know a NA Brilliant Red S4 that you need to beat.

Thanks sir!

What is the record 12.7 (with manifold and headers) ? What should I be looking to run all motor?

I checked the database but there are not a lot of slips to get a good idea.

I have 2.5" trexturk down pipes, Magnaflow cat back, JHM intake manifold w/spacers, 5R clutch/034 flywheel and a JHM 91 tune as the power adders. I know I can get better, I am hoping they will hold an October event if its still mild.

If not I am done until May

Also we only have 91 octane here (unless I run C16 which is pretty pointless)

I uploaded my 13.55 run here view from both cars ( I stole the BMW footage from FB)

Awesome. if you put in some more octane I bet the car would like it. Check in the DIY section for the race gas thread. Its a good read and has some great data in it. Even make it at home race gas how to

For reference, stock IM with JHM spacers, Trexturk catless DPs, FI catback, and JHM 93 tune I ran a best of 13.61@101.3 at ~2,000ft DA.

on the exact same setup (but JHM DPs, not trexturk, and JHM LW FR + JHM LWCP) I ran 12.99 @ 107 at 300 feet of DA. DA can be a killer.

Here’s a bigger list…isolated the 4.2 S4s on our list, and eliminated those with power adders

Wow octane seems to make a big difference! all the cool kids are running 93 + .

I do have some C16 on hand hahaha . Does anyone know if the JHM tune will adapt to higher octane by itself or does it require a complete ECU remap ( like to the 93 file) ? I know a few cars will automatically adapt (like SRT 4) but will the S4?

I am in the process of acquiring a used JHM nitrous kit as part of my next phase while I wait for our Canadian dollar to climb out of the shitter and bring the blower back into reality.

Is anyone with a manual running the Nitrous kit? have they ever launched it at the strip? I read the kit pops at 4K rpm, wondering how that works with JHM launch assist?

I already contacted JHM and they said that despite the kit coming off an auto, I can just install the kit no problem on my manual and don’t even need an ecu remap!

Over the winter I am planning on doing a JHM intermediate kit with the cam adjusters, I would also like to grab some headers. I weigh my options of putting off preventative maintenance in favour of buying more go fast parts, but a big part of me wants to play it safe and make sure things are solid before I toss more money and power at the engine.

Related to that … a local B6 S4 (165,000 kms) popped up for sale, the car is running but has a spongy clutch and needs a new windshield, paint and probably some suspension components… but it is running, has a magna flow cat back… and the guy wants $4500 canadiana … seems pretty tempting to pick up as a “just in case” block  and then have spare body panels and components. A few local guys want parts from it, and I have an immediate offer for the black leather interior already which would bring the actual cost down closer to $2800 which is not too bad for a fairly healthy engine and a bunch of spare sensors (axles/diff/trans and other things that go boom).

it won’t necessarily ‘adapt’ itself, however the tune has the capacity to take advantage of more octane than what is written on the invoice. i.e. a 91 octane tune will request enough timing that if you add 93, it will be able to use it. If you run 91 in the heat, the car will retard timing, shutting off that upside.

same goes for the 93 tune. I ran 94 (basically 93 if you look at the actual ratings that matter for making power) and my car would pull 1 or 2 degrees of timing. If I’d run 95-96 (never did) it would be able to take advantage of those 1 or 2 degrees.

Interesting to know! So c16 is 112 ish octane so how much timing can be advanced to make use of it? Unfortunately I only have access to 91 at the pump so it’s hard to run a 93 file to make it worth while running a better tune (considering the cost of VP fuels/gallon)

running too much octane won’t help your cause either as the tune is anticipating certain fuel properties

If you have the ability to switch to the 93 tune, I would run 91+race gas in a ratio that will make you come out to around 93-94 octane.,

That would be a pain in the ass though needing race all the time.

You’re right, it would be a bitch. Maybe next season I will have to road trip it to the US or Ontario to make use of the better octane at a strip!

I do have the JHM cheetah cable

Jake mentioned that the nitrous tune is actually included with their newer tunes now… you should verify if thats correct, and if the tune you have includes it. The fact that the nitrous system came off an auto (my auto) shouldn’t matter. The window switch just monitors throttle position(WO) and RPM(4k). Ill include the plugs if they are in good shape, or at least as many as i have so you know what to run. There are others on here that run the N2o setup, and ill be around to help out. Get the instal notes from JHM, but verify if they have been updated. I know the instructions that came with my kit had one crucial instal note on wiring reversed from what it should be… forget which one. ::slight_smile:

4500 thats worth grabbing for the back up plan.

As for the tune. saki already said it. The 91 tune will make more power with better fuel but only to a point. You can add a 6:1 raito of 91 to C16 to get a better useable mix. When you get the JHM NOS kit you can run better fuel past the 91 mix. Or when its hot its better to run the higher octane.

Thanks for the feedback sir! Even if you just gave me the plug codes so I could order new ones, I would be happy.

I have have heard about the wiring mistake, it seems to be common on anyone who does the install themselves. I will contact JHM and see if I can get a copy. I have never seen a DIY done on the nitrous kit which is surprising considering how many kits are out there and the affinity this community has for making detailed DIY posts… perhaps I should take a crack at it hahaha

Good to know, I have 10 gal of C16 handy, so that is quite a few fills considering this car is not really a daily.

This page has been very useful for tech advice so far, thank you everyone.
