C6 S6 - JHM overhaul

Given a little of the understanding on a few of the issues you fixed on the car that could be part of the issue. There is usually enough play in hoses and other parts to make up for a bit of movement but that one mount was just done it makes for much harsher movements with a greater range so I can see that playing a roll. Its deffinitly good you got it fixed. When mounts go bad it causes a slow but constant reaction. One bad mount causes another one to go bad and it just keeps going

It’s worth noting that the owner of said Veyron SS also owned a 24 Hours Of Le Mans team that won in the early 2000’s. He’s also the man who owns the RS6 I wrote about a few months back. Very cool getting to chat with him and see his cars!

In celebration of my soon-to-be-finished S6 project, I just ordered custom vanity plates! I can’t believe this one was available, it’s almost like not very many people own these cars

Ha, I too ordered some custom, black plates. Sadly, I have no clue when they will arrive, since CA has a horrible system in place to deal with these. I also may be changing it from what I decided on after being told what someone else thought it meant, and now I can’t see it as anything other than they said.

BTONLND
It was meant to be BoaT ON LaND, playing with the fact that these things are so heavy. They said it looks like ButTON LaND to them, and dammit, it does. So I may have to change that up.

Did you order them online, or did you go up to the DMV? I ask because you mentioned you were able to see that the combination you picked was not taken. I remember years ago you could check that on the DMV website, but I couldn’t find it anywhere and am just assuming that no one else has what I chose.

Nice!

My custom plates took 4 months to receive lol

Lol, I saw that and at first saw ButtonLand but after a second I realized it probably meant BoatOnLand. I like that, it’s funny! I thought about something that made fun of the awful gas mileage, like “YUM GAS” or “YA12MPG” or something just to piss off the Prius drivers haha.

I ordered online, paid $50 they said we nonrefundable, although I’m sure they’ll happily take another $50 if you want to order different ones. When you go to order it, it will tell you if the one you picked is not available. It just doesn’t say anything and takes you to the ordering page if it’s available. Try ordering the plate you ordered again, and it should say it’s not available anymore.

Okay, that is what I assumed it did, but I like how it was many years ago when you could put in random combinations and it would tell you right off if it was available or not.

I’ll likely just keep it how it is, unless I come up with something else that I just flat out love. And with how long CA takes, not even sure I can be bothered. Button Land it is! (Bah!!)

Car has made it home! Unfortunately it was complete gridlock the whole way home, so I barely got to touch the gas pedal yet. The time or two that I did actually get to mash the gas pedal, it definitely felt faster. But unfortunately I just really don’t have much I can say to expand on that yet. Initial impressions are promising though! It seems like there may be a new light rattling sound coming from the front somewhere under full throttle that wasn’t there before, it could be nothing, just something I need to pay attention to. Strangely the exhaust (which wasn’t changed) sounds significantly louder now I think, although that might just be my ears playing tricks on me since it’s been 2 months since I last heard it. It might also be because of the tune, no idea.

I’ll post more in the coming days once I have something useful to say ;D

Nice glad to hear you got the car back. It will take a few days for you to really get a good feel for the car and I would think over the next few days you will see a difference.

The exhaust will sound louder as the JHM tune changes the way the camshafts work. This changes the exhaust tone as well as the overall feel and response of the car. A fun thing to look for is not just a nice big increase in power but a enjoyable bump in better mpg.

Excited to hear more on how your thoughts are after getting it back

Nice, it’s back in the stable.

Did you also have the TCU tuned, or just the ECU? I’m curious if you noticed any difference with shifting speed, both up and down, if you did get it tuned. Also, if you use the paddles at all, any difference there?

Look forward to your report.

Jealous… And looking forward to getting more feedback!

And, also, here I am waiting to hear more information on what’s happening with my car. Developed a miss during cold start on Tuesday morning that is 100% gone once up to temp. Thought (along with my service advisor) it was time to do another injector or 3 under warranty. Friday it made it into the tech’s hands, only to find the spark plug holes filling with oil again.

Can’t remember who knows, but I had all plugs, and some coilpacks and injectors replaced in January. Now, it seems the cam bridges are the cause of the leak. That is an engine/trans out job. So I may be driving this new B9 a little longer than expected.

I’m playing Chauffeur for a 6 year old for the next 2 days so 0-60 runs are out of the question for a little longer, but having driven it around town a little I can definitely say this car has way more power than before, and my ears were definitely NOT playing tricks on me, the exhaust sounds way different. Better.

I did get the ECU and TCU tunes, I believe both are part of the ECU tune package, the same software and flashing doing both simultaneously. I could be mistaken, but that would explain the complete lack of TCU standalone tunes being available on their website. I think the “TCU” is part of the ECU, rather than a separate entity.

It’s definitely noticeable that the trans is acting differently, I just haven’t identified exactly what yet. I’ve only tried D and S modes, but not tiptronic yet. D mode feels similar to before, haven’t identified any obvious differences yet. S mode is a LOT better, though not yet perfect. Certainly an improvement over stock though. Things I’ve noticed in S mode so far: The 2nd to 1st gear downshift when slowing down is far smoother than before, however the shift happens at the same time as before, exactly 3mph. That always annoyed me because it means I have to come to a complete 0mph stop (or not go below 4mph when slowing down) before I go again, or else I get the infamous ZF lurch. That lurch is still there. If the downshift happened at, say, either 0mph or 10mph instead of 3mph, that would reduce the problem significantly. Other downshifts, (for example, 3 to 2) do happen seem to happen at higher speeds than before, which is nice. In 1st gear, with light throttle, the car can get very lurchy. This happened before too, but it’s worse now - HOWEVER, this is not something related to the TCU tune, but rather it’s a “consequence” of the added low RPM torque and throttle response. I can live with that ;D Upshifts happen earlier and faster as well, which is also awesome. All around, the TCU tune is a pretty big deal so far and worth getting. I’ll study it more and post a better writeup when I can play with it more.

Well, I’m getting charged for both an ECU and a TCU tune, so I hope it’s not just Tiptronic tuning in the ECU alone, because the combined cost (including labor) is not cheap (we’re talking teens here). :o

Ah gotcha, it sounds like 2 separate items then. JHM was using my car for R & D so things got itemized differently and I’m still trying to figure out what all they did lol. I have no idea what’s changed in the tiptonic yet, I’ll get back to you on that. But most certainly there are differences in at least Sport mode, it’s just been hard to put my finger on what exactly is different when 99% of my “testing” so far has been in relatively heavy traffic. So don’t read too much into what I’ve said so far, I know very little about it at this point.

Side note, I got a tour of your car which was up on a lift at the time, didn’t end up getting any photos but it’s looking good so far! There was also a white S6 there getting the JHM exhaust, it’s a member here but for some reason I forget whose at the moment, hopefully someone can remind me. Pretty cool that there were 3 C6 S6’s in the same place at the same time though, I bet that hasn’t happened since the last C6 S6’s were still in the factory! That was probably half the S6’s in California ;D

Once my car is done and I make it back up there, I will be asking for particulars to what was done as far as tuning. I’m curious, and didn’t ask beforehand, how they go about doing the tuning. With my past performance cars and sport bikes, the tuning was done during extended dyno sessions to adjust fueling and what not, alongside adjusting shift points, etc.

Very nice!

What state was it in? Did it have its face on or off?

I was in Long beach a few days ago and saw one that was essentially identical to mine, except it didn’t have tinted front windows. So there’s 4 now.

Ya the face was mostly off at that point, I think they were working on the crank pulley at the time.

I saw one the same as yours (had the newer facelift like yours) a few months back as well, at a gas station. I rolled my window and joked “Nice car!” and it was some middle-aged woman driving it, it took her a minute to figure out that I was in basically the same car. I don’t think she really understood the relevance, it seemed like she probably wasn’t really aware of what kind of car she was driving, it was probably hubby’s or something. That’s literally the only other C6 S6 I’ve ever seen on the road besides my own, and now the other 2 that remain at JHM. I did also see a V10 S8 a while back, that sort of counts.

Get some more seat time Scott!! We need a more in depth review  take a quick road trip and stretch her legs

Plus 1 on the rarity, in the time I owned my previous s6, I saw about 8-9 s6s and s8s, and never the same color way as mine which was silver. Just something about em’ right

funny point about that many S6 cars in one spot.

Here is what you see most people find about the JHM tune.

The actual throttle and power response are razer sharp. The car is more eager to accelerate and to follow your throttle input.

It can take a few days to get used to the low speed throttle imput because now the car isnt detuned the throttle opening is now supported by the camshafts moving where they didnt before. The injection timing is shifted and the fuel is at optiomal ratio to help support acceleration lastly the ignition curve is optiomized to help accelerate the car with the cars overall ability.

Before the car was detuned for the average public now that enthusists own the cars we want the cars to perform like a S model not an A model.

Part throttle and mid range driving is where the car shines but the TQ never falls off in the upper rpms and it just keeps pulling. The car makes more usable power at points you only figure out after you have driven the car for a few days and the car has adapted. You guys are on 91 octane so the fact that you can get any more power out of the car is impressive.

Scott I know this is your thread so Ill sit excited for your review. I just thought it might be helpful to put up how most others would decribe the results of the JHM ECU tune on the S4

Yep you pretty much hit the nail on the head with everything you described. I’m still playing with the car and learning, but I will say overall I’m very happy with the results so far. Sport mode definitely wants me to smash the gas pedal, when I go light on the throttle it’s almost like the car is saying “Come on wuss, drive harder!!!” Drive (regular) mode is much gentler obviously, though it’s quick to start roaring when you hammer the throttle. Shifts are definitely snappier than before, which is great because that was always one of my biggest complaints before. I’ll shoot some video of some 0-60 runs as soon as I can, seems like every time I get the chance there is a cop nearby.

Anyways, so far so good, sorry I haven’t given a better writeup yet, I’m still experimenting! Promise I won’t forget about you guys

Having driven my car for about a week now, I figured I’m about due for a quick report here.

Unfortunately, I still don’t have any numbers or video for you guys, I’m working on it… But for now, I’ll post a little teaser about how the car feels.

As mentioned before, the exhaust (which did not change, it is still the Miltek) sounds way different. It is significantly louder, and has has a much different note than before. Not better or worse, just different. I’ve noticed my car gets a LOT more looks from other drivers than before. In my short week of driving it, I’ve gotten “thumbs up” signals from no less than half a dozen people on the roads, one of them the driver of a Maserati. Passed a Lambo today and pounded the throttle as I flew by, but honestly I didn’t see his reaction ;D

The car is definitely, DEFINITELY faster than before, without question. Good launches are no longer a “roll of the dice” - as I have mentioned before, sometimes when I’d smash the throttle the car would chirp its tires and fly away, and other times it felt bogged down and heavy and not that impressive, for no particular reason. Now, every launch is phenomenal.

This thing really flies… For the first time in a long time, it actually feels like a FAST car. Not a moderately quick car, which it always was… but, a FAST car. As a matter of fact, it’s got so much throttle response now that it’s downright difficult to drive slowly. That’s a good thing! Passing cars on the highway is absolutely insane. My car always had great freeway-speed acceleration (ie, 60mph to 100mph), but it’s completely nuts now. Seriously.

Earlier today, I was following a slow driver doing 60mph. I was following at a normal distance, and hit the throttle. I wanted to see how fast my car was going by the time my car was next to hers. Starting at 60mph, closing the 60ft or so gap on her car at full throttle had me at around 100mph. I know that’s not scientific, but sometimes an ear-to-ear grin is all the science you need ;D

This week, maybe tomorrow, I’ll work on some videos. I want to capture a 0-60 run, a 60-100 run, and maybe a flyby from outside the car. I’ll be sure to post them here as soon as I do.

Overall, in a totally unscientific summary of my experience, this work was well worth it. Squeezed a few more years out of the life of my car, while at the same time changing it from a pretty fun car to a downright ridiculous car. More to follow
