CAMlobe wear? How concerned should I be?

I am hearing some slight knocking when under load.

I have heard of the dreaded camlobe wear of the 2002 models.
My car has a MFG date of late 2002.
Is this a big problem?

Should I replace them with OEM products or is that the only option?

Like anything, the longer you wait the worse it gets and more chance of other shit breaking. There are kits you can buy like I posted in my thread that the dealer will not tell you about becasue they want you to peice shit together. 1099$ each bank from genuineaudiparts.com or you can try used but wrecking yard might make you buy the whole head which will make it cost more than the new internals. OEM is the only way to go and I doubt there are even any other options other than OEM as these cars are pretty specific.

Take the entire motor from a junkyard car. Remember the motor was in the A6 too so those are viable donors.

JHM said the car would run like shit if I have this problem.

The car is incredibly smooth even if I do a 3.5-4k launch with traction control off.
I looked in the oil fill hole and the part of the CAM I can see looks bareley used/warn if warn at all.
I am thinking of taking the valve cover on the passanger side off to get a better look.

All 4 CAMs are around $310. each. at PartsGeek.com.
They say OEM.

I am pretty sure OEM is not the same as genuine Audi. And you have to replace the lifters as thats is what is making the noise. Pretty sure theres 30 lifters total. The price difference between partsgeek and gap is so small its not worth it and IMO with internals its much better to stay genuine.

Looked at lifter prices and that led me to read the recomended info.
If lifters are replaced then valves should also be replaced at the same time.
Not sure on this but if I am doing it then why not do all 3 things.

CAMs, Lifters, and Valves?

From everything I have read about the cam lobe wear, you should be able to hear it at any engine speed, not just the top end. It probably wouldn’t hurt to check them, but if you can only notice the noise in higher RPMs, I’d be inclined to think it’s something else.

I can hear it most when I am in first and get on the gas. If I stay on the gas I can hear it in second also.

February/Tax time is soon. I’ll get opinions of the sound from some local shops on what the sound could be.
